Breaking: Spore for iPhone revealed

Sqorgar said:
The Touch lacks a few major features - the biggest one being no speakers. You have to use headphones. There's no camera or bluetooth either. Also, software updates cost extra while on the iPhone they are included in the subscription. On the bright side, the Touch is much slimmer than the iPhone, has a better battery life, has more space available, and you get more space for the money (an iPhone and Touch the same price, the Touch has twice the space).

Personally, I have an innate uncomfortableness with phones so I got a Touch and I think it's amazing.

Just remember: Touch = NO speakers. Could be a deal breaker.

The touch must have some small speaker functionality, because it makes small noises when you do certain UI actions, and there are small alarm noises you can have it make. It's nothing comparable to the DS or PSP though.

Who carries around an ipod without earbuds? And do you really want to be annoying people around you with game sounds?

I really need to scrap some money together to get a Touch.

Sorry, you're right. I should've been more clear. The Touch does have a speaker, but it is a simple one only capable of beeps and boops. You can not listen to audio, either from videos or music, through that speaker. Headphones only for that stuff.

It is possible, I assume, for developers to write music and stuff for the internal speaker, but since the iPhone has a real speaker and the Touch has much more advanced audio available, I just can't imagine anybody going through the trouble.

Yeah, and this also works for DS/PSP anyway. Who would play through the crappy speakers ? Unless you're playing with someone or what, I don't know why you wouldn't use earbuds.

I don't know why some of you are touting this as the next great success in portable gaming- it doesn't have a D-pad, no analogue stick, not even a stylus. And only 3 games demonstrated! lol

Turn-based strategy, here I come!

Maybe developers will have to *shock* take those limitations into account? Also, who needs a stylus when you have a really excellent touch screen?

Possibly because some of the iPhone games already demonstrated involve spinning the iPhone round and round in all directions. I own an iPhone, that wire can get in the way. Ideally Apple will open up the Bluetooth service a little bit and allow stereo bluetooth headphone support which would solve the wired problem... But the Touch doesn't have Bluetooth, either.

Me, personally? No. But I frequently use my Touch in situations when it would be nice to not have to use headphones - like if I'm watching Raiders of the Lost Ark in the bathroom, or when I want to show videos to my two year old daughter who will absolutely not use headphones at all, ever.

I'm just saying, it's difficult to share the iPod Touch with other people because of it. I'd like the option at least, though I'm sure there are solutions I can use.

You don't seem to get the philosophy behind the iPhone/Touch interface.

It uses one big touch screen that can display a practically infinite number of buttons that can be pressed using multitouch.

For example:

nes-emulator-iphone.jpg

A developer can design any button combination they want, tailored to their specific game. And also use touch "dragging" for analogue. Why have a stylus when you can use your fingers?

And these games where only created in the last 2 weeks. EA and SEGA have said more are on the way, and if the iPhone/Touch keeps selling like they are you can bet way more will follow.

iPhone will never be a serious gaming competitor, its too expensive compared to DS and PSP and unlike the DS everyone who buys an iPhone is not interested in gaming. No one buys a DS for non gaming reasons.

iPhone gaming sector will always be tiny and uneventful.

You folks don't really listen to music on the earbuds that come with the ipods, do you? Those things output the worst quality audio ever.

I'm sure there are small speakers you can buy for it online or at Chinatown near you. My mom picked up a few from the Philippines a month ago.

While that is true, this kind of interface for button replacement is really kinda terrible. It doesn't give you any tactile feedback, and it's just not very precise. I doubt you will see too many commercial games that require this kind of interface.

For $99 anyone can put their game on iTunes and painlessly charge for it or put it up for free. Isn't that a first for a major platform? With Xbox Live's developers club they haven't sorted out the pay structure yet, and I'm not even sure how things get approved for Steam. This could certainly end up being a great avenue for indie developers.

I have that NES emulator on my Touch and games just control horribly. Maybe I just need to get used to it but Bubble Bobble was so hard to play.

True there is no tactile feedback, however it is very precise.

The loss in tactile feedback is more than made up for in the versatility of applications that can be created on the iPhone. Just look at the breadth of things the iphone can already be used for.

Is there a lag in that particular emulator? Or something else?

Uh, it was. The iPhone isn't exactly the same as the Japanese mobile phone market, if that's what you're trying to get at.
No, but the part where you discounted one of the fastest-selling cellular phone devices in consumer history as an after-thought or a non-factor smacked of "joke post".

For all you nay sayers this WILL BE apples biggest gaming platform.. Not the Apple IMAC or Powerbook but the IPHONE will sell more GAMES than any other apple system...

Oh and also the Iphone has better graphics than the DS already. Imagine the TURN based RPG's that could be made, Imagine the FPS tilt left or right to look out from wall etc...

This is a MEGATON and IM getting an IPHONE as SOON as 3G's are out... Saving up now.. It's going to be an AWSOME ride.. HELLO APPLE!!

On screen buttons are no replacement for real buttons. The best iphone games will be the simple ones like SMB. Also finer controlled games like Elite Beat Agents and Trauma Center would be impossible on the iphone since it doesn't has a stylus (Go ahead, try to play those games on your DS without a stylus!) or any games that involve drawing.

That being said, the iphone won't be able to play the same types of games as on DS but the same can be said in reverse as there are many unique games that won't be able to be done on the DS or any console!

An 8 gig iPod Touch cost the same price as a PSP with an 8 gig memory stick.

Ho-hum. That is one interesting development.
I always thought (judging by the way the japanese like their mobile phones) that the next mobile gaming console generation would include some kind of phonelike connectivity. (or, failing that, next but one by the latest)
Looks like Apple jumped in first. Now if they can get the iphone/Touch down to reasonable prizes Nintendo and Sony actually do stand to lose a bit of marketshare. Nothing serious, I think, at first at least. There's a whole lot of potential on this new platform. Ah well.

I suddenly want an iphone/Touch. Coincidentally I bought a Mac recently, even if it's only an old G5 it's still an awesome machine. Figures I now want the next iProduct. Gah. I'm infected. Someone clobber me over the head before it spreads to my dog.

One the most original (and my favorite) could certainly be done on the iPhone

Kirby Canvas Curse :lol

mobile games win again

Iphone needs a better battery, mine wont last long now that there is this.

The iPhone battery is already insane. I get like 6 hours video + internet + 18 hours standby on mine. It's mental, I don't know how tf it works but the fucking thing just goes and goes and goes.

Will that stop it from getting hundreds of games, many of which I'll find myself very interested to play? No, I don't think so. I don't know exactly what metric you want to use, but that will make it a serious enough gaming competitor for me.

This will be huge. This is the next big thing in the industry. Imagine how easy it will be to port games like Flow over to the iPhone... man this is going to be awesome! How about some Lemmings action?

Wow... EA is really whoring Spore to the extreme.
This is one game I would not mind being whored.

The more people that are exposed to it, and thus become fans of this sort of game, the better. I think it would be great to expand the simulation and strategy genres. Better them massively expanding on Spore than yet another generic FPS or sports game.

Assuming, at least, that my core PC version doesn't suffer. Also, I'm not suggesting your stance on this; just using your comment to iniate my own.

Have you guys watched the feed of the event, which is on Apple's site? They show off Touch Fighter, Spore, and Super Monkey Ball beginning at 41 minutes in.

iPhone capable of better graphics than DS and PSP -- confirmed.

In light of today's announcement, my money is on an iphone version of Audiosurf by this time next year

Fixed

Now if only a 3G/GPS enabled iPhone would come out (/w tethering option).... then I won't have any need for my current PDA Phone/iPod setup anymore.

Edit: Also, I'm amazed at the negative response to the $99 developer/distribution license I'm seeing around the internets. Even people who publish free software have to pay for website hosting and deal with promoting the software; $99 for hosting, distribution, promotion, and pushing out updates is a steal.

I would not be surprised to see an iPhone Guitar Hero out this year.

This is Activision we're talking about -- they'll whore that game out to every single platform possible. And since it seems easy to create games for the iPhone I'm sure they can get something ready by November.

Frankie in thread about iPhone... Bungie used to love the Mac platform... He's confirming things that have happened regarding the iPhone and Apple... He knows things about Apple...

It's all so simple. Pimps at Sea for iPhone in 2009 -- confirmed.

Game of the year.

moreover that the $99 license also includes a personal digi-signature, which you'd need to distribute apps for the platform, and such a sig usually goes for about $60 per year from companies providing those. any way you look at it, that $99 fee is practically nothing given it gives you access to one of the world's biggest download stores.

If the iPhone 2 has more powerful hardware, I'll get it for gaming. As it stands, the iPhone is pretty weak.
not really. the fillrate is not weak at all, but vertex-wise it could've used a VGP part there.. then again, the DC did not have dedicated vertex hw (aside from the SIMD extension) and and it still did achieve amazing things.

The only thing bad about it is no bluetooth. With that it would be the ultimate VOIP phone now that the SDK is out. I'd be able to finally get rid of my cell phone. So much for that though unless they add it in.

so why don´t you get a nokia from the E or N series? They got bluetooth and wireless plus speakers, camera and all that shit. You could use skype on there.
