No, the left one is literally wrong. If you're playing a game that uses control stick, the entire intent of the design is that you place your hand on the prong with the control stick. Going across the controller doesn't even make sense.
Wow....I....have played 100s of hours of N64 and have always held it from the left and right handles.... This just blew my brain. Granted I have large hands, but still, how did I not know this!
This is how I always saw him.
Is this unknown? I'm pretty sure I remember it being in the dialogue.

Screw your tiny baby T-Rex claws. I maintain that the controller was designed like that to accomodate both people with large and small hands, holding the two handles right next to each other just feels uncomfortable to me. Both ways are correct, but you only accept one, which does make you worse as a person.

Well this is a shock. Guess that's what happens with you have to deal with 2D sprites.
To be honest the proper way is really not comfortable, especially for someone with large hands.

Threads around reactions like this, the N64 controller...always makes me think of those people that complain about "not getting" Wii motion controlls, Wii U gamepad and other things. Maybe they've been doing or playing things wrong all the time, hated them, then never realized their mistake.

Exactly, even though my hands were smaller when the N64 came out (I was 12 or 13), to me it just didn't feel comfortable at all to hold the controller from the middle. I've tried many times but couldn't bring myself to play like this.

No official art, but what me realize it, is the location where you fight Queen Zeal. It looks exactly like the middle part of the overworld sprite, so it made realize where the "summit" of the Black Omen was and what the whole thing really was. When I found out, I searched on Google and I found that fanart above, and also this Minecraft model:

Furthermore, the actual Black Omen dungeon consists of loooooooong corridors mostly going north. There's only like two elevators I think and no stairs at all (unlike the Ocean Palace), so it would be weird for a tower.
