Yeah, Spike has some of the best and funniest lines in the entire show.
It was definitely a bit slow setting up, but overall I really liked Season 1. I'm nearly done with Season 2 myself and the show is really good.

I'm not sure if I like or dislike the erratic way Angel bounces from being 'Funny' to stoic.

This is honestly one of the best moments in Buffy/Angel ever.
Seriously, I burst out laughing at Spike and his teasing XD.
I watched Angel before I saw Buffy. Buffy was out when I was in high school and it looked stupid. Angel looked even dumber when I was in college, there was some green dorky demon thing talking like a HOO-MAN and I said no every time I flipped channels.
It wasn't until later on I was bored and I accidently watched an episode where they meet Fred for the first time. And I instantly fell in love with her, my weakness is stick thin, insane but intelligent women. So I said fuck it and started to watch the series from the start wondering how it led up to some weird ass Xena like world when I thought it took place on Earth.
I loved it, couldn't stop watching, even with some of the slower episodes. By the time I caught up the show ended up getting cancelled so I got to watch the last episode the day it aired. So I moved on to Buffy, and while I enjoyed it and appreciated how I now I could understand who some of the characters or things that happened in Angel came to be I still think Angel was the superior series. Well.. Sometimes. Watching Buffy and Angel I thought Cordelias transformation into some bitchy mook completely changed by the time Angel happened, but some of the stuff they did with her by the last few seasons seemed like a throwaway for such a great character. And don't get me started on Fred... Bleh. Yeah I'm not an Illyria fan.

Enjoy the ride! It's well worth it.
I finished Angel last week, damn what a show. The character development was fantastic, particularly for Cordelia and Wesley. That it got cancelled is such a crime, especially after Season 5 being so good. They dynamic between Spike and Angel was a welcome addition.
The dual deaths of Fred in Wesley's arms ("Wesley, why can't I stay?") and then Wesley in "Fred's" arms ("would you like me to lie to you now?") in the last few episodes was great; I wish they had more time together but it worked well for me since they knew the series was cancelled.
The fourth season of Buffy is horrible. If you're only a few episodes in, then you probably haven't reached "Beer Bad," which is the worst Buffy episode in existence.
Endure that season and prepare yourself for one of the best seasons of television history.

Eeeeeeeee! Buffy is in my top three all-time shows. Not nearly as into Angel. Haven't seen all of them, but I'm not a big fan of Boreanz and the ones I've seen seemed much campier/more over-the-top to me.

Aaand now I have to rewatch Buffy.... AGAIN.
I was a fan from the beginning and stuck with it 'till the end. Loved James Marsters. Was not as fond of the Angel series, but watched it. I think it got better as time went on (bigger budget maybe?), whereas Buffy got weird. Loved it anyway.

Actually, Angel's budget was cut pretty dramatically for the last season. They just worked around it well,

One of my favorite moments in Buffy is after Spike gets his soul and he's dealing with remorse and he breaks down and hugs the cross crying while Buffy watches.

Overall S4 has its moments, but feels lame when realize it's sandwiched between S3 and S5.

Tara was insufferable, the actress was awful. That's all I wanted to say 
Yeah, it's as bad as the first season episode where the demon possesses a computer, but by season 4 they should have known better.

It has a few fun episodes, but overall? It just doesn't work as a whole. In my opinion of course. It's still a great season, cause it's Buffy and all, but it's no season five.

There's an all day Buffy marathon on SyFy today, in case anyone missed the news. It's running until 5am tonight.
Angel is such a better show than Buffy. I mean one does have to suffer the whole thing with Angel's
, but i feel the characters are better written - to the point that freaking Cordelia is probably one of my favorite characters in the universe - and the show doesn't have quite as much camp as Buffy.
Neither compares to Firefly though, which I think is masterful, but is probably also helped by Whedon finally getting away from the Buffy-verse.

Buffy's response to Faith
killing that guy always seemed a little overblown to me. Yeah, he was human...but the demons she fights are sometimes basically just human too. They've shown demons that are "normal" and aren't evil, so they're really not that different from people other than appearance. It just seemed odd that she built up this massive separation in her mind about killing.

This. Like you said, thats the one really weak part of Angel's whole five season run. "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" still top 3 Whedonverse related episode of anything for me.
Been re-watching Buffy over the last month and just watched the first couple episodes of Season 7. So far I can't say I've disliked any season, but Season 4 is definitely the worst. With the exception of "Hush", there were no episodes that really stood out to me as particularly great.
Still, overall I enjoyed it. I even hated Riley a lot less than I expected.

Seen every episode of both series! They were favorites of mine in the 90s. A few months ago I decided to start watching them all over again from the start. Beginning with Buffy season 1, and I will start on Angel when I get to the point in the series when it spun off (remind me again, was it around Buffy season 4-5?). I've gotten to the start of season 2 and am eagerly awaiting the debut of Spike.
Buffy was great but the dark humor and cast chemistry of Angel make it my favorite, despite the convoluted plotlines.
A little off topic, but I've been checking out Whedon's Dollhouse, and it's pretty good. Eliza Dushku is a vision. She's the reason I watched Tru Calling as well, and I wasn't disappointed. Well, until the show was canceled after two seasons. And I know the same thing happened to Dollhouse (preparing myself for the heartbreak).

It was an accident, and could just as easily have happened to Buffy in my opinion. And that's an excellent point about the "humanity" of demons. Maybe Buffy had such a severe reaction because it challenged that very separation you mention?

Give me Buffy, Willow, Xander, Spike (granted in Angel for a season), Anya (ohh god Anya - I'd marry her!), Tara (she was great IMO) and yes I'm gonna say it, Dawn (she did what she was meant to do and then developed into a great character) - and honourable mention, Glory (god I loved Glory)
Do I love Angel, ohh yes indeed BUT I find Buffy to be better. Its like getting a kick ass sports car that is just great (Angel) and then putting a hot babe in the passenger seat to make the kick ass sports car even better (Buffy)
