Buying Old Apple Products and Why I Do It

I don't know, I have this vision set up of what I want it to be. I want my desk in my apartment to have my iPad docked to the left, Macbook Air in the middle, and iPhone docked to the right. Three devices I can stick into my backpack and be ready for any circumstance. The perfect trio.

My perfect trio of walkman, CRT, record player beats your perfect trio

I'd rather spend $500 on that than a disgusting used laptop. At least this has retro charm.

lol

overpaid unfortunately.

Your reasoning is also REALLY weird.

So you dont want to buy say last years model because its already outdated but youre ok with a 5 year old model?

I really dont understand your logic.

You seem to be the type that doesn't upgrade often, and that's fine. But the solution isn't to buy OLD technology when you need a replacement device. Buying (relatively) new stuff will save you money and give you a longer lifespan.

Original OSes are meaningless when you consider that it's the hardware that's going to struggle with many of today's website designs.

See another benefit to buying old tech is that any replacement parts are cheaper and accessories are also cheaper. If i need a new iPhone 4 or Macbook Air battery, they are cheap! Good as new.

Can't wait for some impressions when you get these products in.

Not always true, especially when that have stopped manufacturing for a few years and the supply dries up.

For a 1440x900 display? Best trackpad in the world? Best keyboard? Thin and light? Yeah, it's worth it to me for the brand alone.

When you want to go Apple.. this is the way to do it cheaply. :)

this is what you said (about this laptop you bought) in the other thread though:

This is me saying F-you to apple. I don't like their new products. I want to live in 2010.

It seems contradictory.
I don't think you can go cheap with Apple.

Seriously, I just gave a 2010 Air to Apple to recycle because it's pure garbage now. It barely handles browsing with the latest OS. You will have no fun with this at all.

Using the old OS doesn't help you from where web technologies are at right now. Browsing will be torturous on this.

Won't be that bad, really. I just dug out an original Macbook Air at my office—2GB of RAM, slow 1.8" HDD, 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo. It actually performs pretty well at web browsing under Safari 5 and OS X 10.6.8. Hell if you don't want to watch a lot of video you can use an old G4 and get acceptable speeds.

The bigger issue to me is less horsepower and more software compatibility. You aren't getting security updates, which is essentially irrelevant to Macs *except* for browser vulnerabilities, and those aren't going to get patched ever.

I think there's something impressive about keeping old hardware trucking (my 2010 Mac Pro won't be slowing down any time soon), but that doesn't extend to actually spending more money on the hardware than its worth in the overall market.

That $200 is subsidised by a 2 year contract. The real cost of an iPhone 6 is $649.

They aren't even really subsidized as the price of plans that come with phone discounts (and thus contracts) is higher.

It is the only reason smart phones sell so well though.. all these people basically buying things they can't afford on credit hidden in the cost of phone plans they can barely afford.

Your definition of cheap is weird as well. $500 for a 5 year old laptop was not cheap. $70 for a battery for a 2010 air that gives you 3 hour battery life is not cheap. $120 for an iPhone 4 is not cheap either.

I don't think the MBA will be quite as bad as some are reacting in here, but it's not gonna be smooth. You have to stick to basic stuff though like web/email. I doubt Garageband will even bee useable.

how much RAM in the MBA?

What is the point of making a thread in a forum if you're going to deflect everything?

If you're so sure about your stand why the need to prove us all wrong?

You are like a new (Moore's law adjusted) Unabomber?

Alright, I don't believe this anymore. Troll thread.

That works on an inverse curve. Look up the prices on your darling new 2010 macbook air and compare it to the model above that.

Sorry to burst your bubble, OP

Well, I did want to hear everyone's feedback. I might send it back and get the newer air...

So the general consensus is that the iPhone 4 purchase was fine but the MacBook Air was a waste of money? It hasn't shipped just yet... it says shipping label created...

You'd be much better off with at least a 4S as well.
It too was a significant step up.

I'd go for a 5C at least, i just moved from a 4 6 months ago (with ios 7 though) and it was as slow as a river of shit

Is there no one who agrees with the way I think? I can do basic things with the devices I bought. Web browsing, emailing, take photos, iPhoto, iMovie, garageband... that's all I really need. The devices will be running their original operating systems so speed will not be an issue.
I mostly agree with you, OP. That's why I rock a 2730C. Love it!

As a person still using an iPhone 4, I'm gonna say that you've made a huge mistake. Its frustratingly slow, camera sucks, its heavy, constant lag and delay on swipes and touchscreen imput, and calls on speaker mode might as well be white noise. Edit: The issues are likely due to new OS firmware and Apple no longer supporting, let alone considering the iPhone 4 when doing their firmware updates. Its incredibly outdated. You also overpayed for the laptop.

But uh, whatever floats your boat, man.

Yes, the Air is a huge waste of money because, at minimum, you can get a vastly superior 2011 unit for pretty the same price if that's the direction you want to go in.

All in all you are still upgrading compared to what you had until now so it really isn't that awful but that MacBook Air... you really paid a lot for such an old piece of tech.

Seriously cancel that Air and spend the $300 extra for this: 2014 13" Air for $799.

Plus you could go out and have it today.

Ew. Contracts are terrible. With iPhone 4 I'm going to get the $50 a month unlimited talk text and 1 GB of data plan from AT&T. Also switching to AT&T as well.

I have a 6 and I pay $60 a month for unlimited data and text from AT&T. That 1GB won't get you far if you are ever off Wi-Fi.

that's also not true.
replacement parts for devices that are so old are neither mass-produced anymore not stocked by most outlets.

Older doesn't mean cheaper. eventually you'll pay a premium because the supply of the parts you need starts drying up.

and it's not the fact that you want to buy "older models" - that's a perfectly fine way to go about things. Not to always get the bleeding edge of technology but scavenge for 2-3 year old hardware because that's when price/performance meets a sweet spot.

But 500$ is objectively too much for a 2010 macbook.
As some have pointed out your "OS doesn't matter as i'm going to be running the OS it came with" is crap, too.

What's the latest version of Safari that Snow Leopard supports? what version of webkit is that? Do you know how far browsers have come ever since? - you'll either need to upgrade to a OS that runs sluggish just to have an up to date version of Safari OR you'll have to live with your browser being hopelessly out of date.

you dun goofed, OP.

No, you could have gotten a 4s for the same price.
Some 5 models even sell for just that price or a little more if you're patient and keep looking.

Both are huge jumps in speed.

iphone 5/5c isn't much more. I am not sure why you are so set on 2010 tech, you are definitely looking at it with rose-tinted goggles. It might have been fine at the time, but laptops, computers, smartphones, etc. don't age as well as other types of electronics.

I can kind of see where you are coming from, with vintage equipment that is built much better than what is built today. Things just don't worth that way with modern electronics.

See if you can cancel both orders, get a 5/5c if you are so dead set on Apple and don't want to/can't afford a 6, and replace the macbook with something a bit newer that will perform decently in today's world.

Save an extra $80 and get it open box.

Like everyone has said you should have done a little more research. Apple products hold their value more for some stupid reason. Anyhow, you could have probably got 2012 products that run the latest software had you invested an extra $200 and a little more patience. I do like what your doing though and really hope you enjoy your experience with them considering you have invested so much money into them!
