Buying Old Apple Products and Why I Do It

Technology needs to slow the fuck down. :/ Upgrading a huge ordeal for me in the first place. Remember, I still have a RAZR phone.

Disagreed, technology needs to make bigger jumps. Battery technology sucks, and we need better technology to help make the environment better. Just saying.

Devaluing technology makes me sad. That's why I buy tech that has already been devalued.

What I am doing is the equivalent of buying a used car off a lot. MANY people do this!

It's nothing like that. Cars are largely static, all you have to do is maintain them as-is. Computers and phones are modular software ecosystems. Buying an old one locks you out of the vast majority of contemporary software. You will flat-out not be able to install a huge amount of apps on your phone if you lock it to an old version of iOS, and the age of your laptop will similarly limit your ability to function on the modern web.

"Have fun."

T-Mobile =/= AT&T. Depending on the area it could be a HUGE difference. Check out Cricket though since it runs on AT&T.

He says he's switching to AT&T so he has something else presumably.
And if not that, there are very similar plans that work on AT&T as you mentioned like Cricket or Straight Talk.

Well then how in the world are you being logical upgrading to old stuff?

If upgrading is a huge ordeal for you; you should upgrade to the latest and greatest.. that way you won't have to upgrade for longer.

This. Bang for your buck can come from buying new and making it last. In the case of the phone, it's not too bad. But the laptop was a bad deal. Tech wasn't great and the price is too high compared to what you can pay for a far newer device.

Also, OP is underestimating that he will have to upgrade OSes for apps to run well or at all. If he is content to be mostly offline or self-contained to the apps included, then he may be just fine though.

2010 is a significative year for you I get that, but you also need to be smart about what you buy, is not crazy to say that a 2011 Air will last you at least or get you adecuate performance 3 years more than the 2010 model

I know everyone is enjoying ripping OP to pieces and im not here to defend him or say he is right about his decision.

But checking at prices on that Macbook it seems like a lot of people are buying that same machine for the same price or more.

Isnt that what dictates the price of something?

I have never owned a Macbook Air and Im sure a $500 chromebook or Windows laptop is 100 times better than it but I think its unfair to say "lol, you are stupid and you overpaid for it".

Truth is, if his budget is iron clad and his wish is to have 3 Apple products next to each other on his desk (silly but who are we to judge), this is literally the only way to do it without having to expose yourself to local psychos on Craigslist.[/QUOTE]

Yes, all those prices are crazy for what you're getting in return.
They all deserve to be ripped like the OP since they're buying without researching. You can get a 2011 model for similar prices and even cheaper than some of the closed prices you posted.

You simply get more for your money with the 2011 Air as it's better, and will last you longer if not upgrading.

OP if you want the best deal right now hands down, and you're not a heavy gamer, do yourself a favor and get a Toshiba Chromebook 2.
Not even joking. Much cheaper, and 20x better than that 2010 Air.

Yet, I insist on the year 2010 because it is a special year for me personally.
And then I will post pictures on this thread of all my products side by side on my desk and the apple eco system will be complete. Ultimate.

Sigh, troll thread.

Just saying Harbor Mobile runs at T-Mobile. Coverage might suck where BMS lives. Harbor Mobile is an awesome option if T-Mobile coverage is good.

No troll thread, this is just what happens when someone drinks the Apple kool-aid for too long, and gains a warped sense of hardware worth.

Those $500 listings on ebay aren't because the device is actually worth $500. It's because people who don't know better will see "Macbook Air" and purchase it, and $500 was likely as high as they could go without scaring off purchasers to just "go through Apple" instead.

Buying a new, or even refurbished product direct from Apple is almost always a better option than buying one of their older models, ESPECIALLY when it's been years. There's almost zero justification to doing so outside of willful ignorance.

I'm getting ripped to pieces in this thread. I honestly think $499 was worth it for the 2010 laptop. That's the lowest I could find on eBay.

If you weren't looking to spend too much on a new computer, I would have have gone with a PC over a Mac. You could have gotten something much better for the same price.

It is not a troll thread. Seriously if I don't post pictures and proof next week when these products arrive, then ban me. It's just that simple. I vow to use these products in my daily life like they were meant to be used.

Well that just shows commitment to the trolling rather than proof.

I hope those batteries in the i4 and Air still have a decent runtime. How fast do batteries lose their lifetime after five years of charging?

Come to think of it, people who buy new/slightly used Apple products (like me) should be happy for the existence of buyers like OP who keep the resale values high.

Might as well stick with your 2007 Toshiba if you're buying a laptop for $500 with 2008 technology. Get a 2011 Air at least.

It's likely that I will have to buy new batteries.

So at this point you won't have even saved much, if any money, from buying these old models versus buying a more recent or refurbished newer one.

I can't fathom what event in your life would warrant such a love for a 2010 era macbook air.

An iPhone 4? Yeesh, that's really going too far back. You could have at least gotten a 4S for roughly the same price.

Prices on the 5S have dropped really rapidly too. I'm thinking about picking up one for aroudn $300.

I think the best thing about aftermarket Apple phones is that extra storage typically does not cost you an extra $100. The difference between a 16gb iPhone and a 32gb iPhone is usually like $20-$30

That laptop was a bad deal, but whatever you like.

I thought his thread was gonna be about putting flash drives in old iPods, or putting an Intel NUC in an old iMac G4 or something cool. I hope that iPhone doesn't have iOS7 on it.

The year he agreed to the Terms and Agreements.

There's no way that 2010 MBA is worth 500$? Really?
I mean my 2012 MBP with retina is freaking slow and frustrating, a 2010 MBA?

Also I think my MBP is worth no more than 800$, how can the MBA be worth 500$?

Actually
want my MBP? I'll let it go for 900$ JUST FOR YOU OP
(isn't it a great deal, i mean it's at least 80% better than that 2010 MBA)

I feel really sad for you. Why are you attached to these things?

You aren't getting cool points with anyone for doing these things, and you are just not getting the most out of your money, honey.

No matter the brand, I used to see this mindset a lot when I worked computer repair for retail/residential customers, and I never really understood it. With technology those folks would more often than not cause themselves more headaches, problems and/or money and lost time trying to squeeze blood from an orange.

It's likely that I will have to buy new batteries.

mmhmm

My 2012 Air still runs like a champ but man OP, if you want to buy premium save up and go all out, otherwise buy something new in your price range. This is like buying a 2001 BMW for $10,000 and spending hundreds more in constant repairs and maintenance but thinking you're a boss because "hey it's a Beamer!"

I thought this was going to be a thread about collecting old iPods, having an OS9 setup or an Apple 2 and I was looking forward to seeing some photos.

Instead it's a thread about horrible decision making.

I've always kinda wanted a titanium Powerbook even though I'm not a big Apple fan because IMO it's the most visually appealing device Apple has ever made. But never enough to actually pay for one on eBay.

Also I still have my OG 2003 iPod(one of the ones where the buttons were above the click wheel rather than on it) somewhere, but I won't get rid of it because sentimental reasons. I'm not even sure that it works anymore.

For reference, to anyone wondering what this MBA actually runs:

Core 2 Duo SL9400 @ 1.8GHz (17w part)
Geforce 320M (not GT) with 256MB shared from main RAM
2GB ram (maybe 4GB if originally configured that way)

Now I'm not all knowledgable about power, but I'm pretty sure the 320M is somewhere below the Intel HD4000.

See this makes a little bit more sense, because it's a unique product that no longer has a modern equivalent, just products that replaced it. The OP is buying something that still exists in 2015, but buying a severely inferior version of it.

I still keep my OG iPod (it was the first one with video) in my desk at work as a backup in case my phone dies or i can't get a decent signal. Used it just a few weeks ago actually. Battery sucks but it still works.

Nail on the head

Buying old products is fine, except you're closer to the age of the product that it's going to fail. Apple products are hard to fix yourself and you're going to pay way more than it's worth to have someone fix it for you. Heck even if you do fix it yourself, most parts are proprietary and if it's old, they're rare because they're no longer in production. Meaning you're either once again going to pay a premium price for an old, used product or spend a similar amount of money to fix your old, slower product.

I know this first hand having just recently fixed an old imac that was given to me. I understand, after getting it fixed, why my friend just GAVE it to me and bought a new one. It wasn't worth fixing even though it was the top of the line when it came out 4 years ago.

OP, you're crazy... The only older Apple hardware that can still keep up are the Xenon Mac Pros... My 2008 8 core is still hanging in there. But it's starting to have issues and I'm gonna replace it with something like a Mac Mini, soon.
