Buying Old Apple Products and Why I Do It

If you're computer requirements are extremely light, browser / document editing only, I can see this being solid reasoning, but you paid way too much money for a 5 year old laptop, especially a premium brand like Apple and the Air too....cmon.

That was pretty dumb man.

Seriously cancel that Air and spend the $300 extra for this: 2014 13" Air for $799.

Plus you could go out and have it today.

I have a 6 and I pay $60 a month for unlimited data and text from AT&T. That 1GB won't get you far if you are ever off Wi-Fi.

That same link also has two open box versions, one for 735 and another for 712 both in excellent condition, since op seems fond of of used products.

Save an extra $80 and get it open box.
Or use a 10% off USPS "mover's" coupon (available at any post office) and the $50 off Mac Best Buy education coupon and get it new for $675!

Since this really isn't a troll thread and I sincerely plan on using this products, I will update you on my impressions when I get them in next week.

With a bit more research and a bit more investment, I think you could have gotten better specced Apple products. 4S would have been the bare minimum for an iPhone with the much better processor and band design. 2011+ air would have also been a better choice.

The risk associated with buying such old devices is wear and tear, especially on the iPhone. Replacement parts clearly wasn't researched well by OP, since these devices are old.

Even if i think that you kinda wasted your money i'm actually curious of the experience these two products can give in this day and age when one have not used them before.

And I will definitely let you know. I'll even post pics of my ebay purchases when I get them! We'll go in depth to how well these products hold up in 2015. It'll be fun!

Ew. Contracts are terrible. With iPhone 4 I'm going to get the $50 a month unlimited talk text and 1 GB of data plan from AT&T. Also switching to AT&T as well.

Jesus. Just get on the contract and convince yourself it's whatever vintage year you thought was good.

once again: noone doubts he could be having a perfectly decent experience.

he still overpaid because he could be having twice as good of an experience for not even 20% extra cost, if any.

I still do not understand how this is a "fuck you" to Apple.

deflating the share of devices using iOS 8!

we don't need your "impressions", you know?

there's 5 year old reviews we could read.

But but but are there impressions or reviews of these product and how they hold up 5 years after its launch :P

OP but serously why lol

I know everyone is enjoying ripping OP to pieces and im not here to defend him or say he is right about his decision.

But checking at prices on that Macbook it seems like a lot of people are buying that same machine for the same price or more.

Isnt that what dictates the price of something?

I have never owned a Macbook Air and Im sure a $500 chromebook or Windows laptop is 100 times better than it but I think its unfair to say "lol, you are stupid and you overpaid for it".

Truth is, if his budget is iron clad and his wish is to have 3 Apple products next to each other on his desk (silly but who are we to judge), this is literally the only way to do it without having to expose yourself to local psychos on Craigslist.

Yet, I insist on the year 2010 because it is a special year for me personally.

One thing I don't get about "how they hold up" is that you don't have modern devices. It's more of a case study of how someone who knows about new tech, but doesn't have it, feels jumping into old tech that's newer than he has experienced before...

And then I will post pictures on this thread of all my products side by side on my desk and the apple eco system will be complete. Ultimate.

OP, do you think that an iPhone 4 and that MacBook are as fast in their original OSes than current MacBooks and iPhones are on theirs? If so you are in for a rude awakening

I know that he overpaid this stuff but regardless you do not see everyday someone actually upgrading (he comes from a 8 y/o pc and an even older phone) to a product that's 5 years old, hence my curiosity.

How they hold up? You have no idea compared to todays standards.

He kinda has a point though, before Mavericks all OSes that came after Snow Leopard were much slower. He will still slow down because of the modern websites but it's a good move to keep the original OSes.

Devaluing technology makes me sad. That's why I buy tech that has already been devalued.

What I am doing is the equivalent of buying a used car off a lot. MANY people do this!

That analogy doesn't make sense. I wouldn't buy a Lisa and be like man check out my vintage computer, let me check Facebook on this...wait it's impossible.

Used cars and old technology are not really the same thing.

20 years from now Apple Enthusiasts will pay large sums of moneys for iPhone 1 for the same reason gamers pay large sums of moneys for NES games today.

yeah, you still wouldn't buy a 200.000 miles Ford from 1983 for 9.000$ though.

it's not about you buying used.
it's you buying too old for too much money.

I did buy it for too much and I agree, but theres no place cheaper I can get a 2010 MBA.

The tech change between cars and laptops aren't remotely equivalent. A 5 year old car isn't nearly as outdated as a 5 year old laptop.

Technology needs to slow the fuck down. :/ Upgrading a huge ordeal for me in the first place. Remember, I still have a RAZR phone.

that your story suddenly went from "i wanted to buy a used product" to "i am in love with the year 2010" nobody in this thread could foresee.

what the heck. wouldn't that be even more reason to future proof your purchases?!

I know that, and objectively the 2010 Air should be and upgrade from his 2007 laptop, but hardware alone is not the only thing that has evolved since then, web services and sites have evolved just as much, and they have a reliance not only on newer hardware to run well, but also optimizations from more modern OSes, that plus the 2010's Air had lots of issues that got corrected in the 2011 model which I´m willing to bet won´t make OP´s experience that much better compared to his Toshiba laptop

Damn, even your phone contract is overpriced.

https://www.harbormobile.com/plans/

$30 for unlimited talk, text, and 2.5gb LTE
I use it on my 5 and soon 6.

T-Mobile =/= AT&T. Depending on the area it could be a HUGE difference. Check out Cricket though since it runs on AT&T.

I can't decide if this is better than the 30 dollar Italian meal thread or not

Better, the $30 meal, while overpriced, was still edible in today's environment.

Dude, you can't compare obsolete technology to a 5 year old used car. Apples and oranges.

Well then how in the world are you being logical upgrading to old stuff?

If upgrading is a huge ordeal for you; you should upgrade to the latest and greatest.. that way you won't have to upgrade for longer.
