It's possible that we aren't on the same page here. Does anybody here actually have a problem with a video game character being gay? I myself have no problem. I think a lot of people are wondering the motive and are suspecting some sort of pandering going on. In the real world I don't make it my business to find out the sexual orientation of everybody I meet, not do I make assumptions.

If Blizzard is doing this to earn some kind of points or a pat in the back... I think that's what people have a problem with.

It sounds to me like you are making assumptions. I know gay man that has dated another gay man that was previously married and had kids. Now again i'll ask. Did they specifically go out of their way to say a character was straight or are we going on just assumptions?
They didn't go out of there way to say the character in the op is gay. The panel is right there you can read it.

Lmao, GAF is turning into QQera lately.
Not even sure why it would or should matter what a virtual character made of 3D pixel's sexual orientation is.
What makes you think the OP is "happy" about this news?

What do you mean pointed out? If you saw him in a hetero relationship you wouldnt think they where pointing out that he is in a hetero relationship?

They're not pointing out anything you are.
But we wouldn't know he was in hetero relationship because it wouldn't be bought up.
And what about the other characters. What's there sexual orientation?
the reason we are having this discussion is because it's been pointed out.

I think I understand what you’re going for but this seems kind of flimsy, at least to me. But I’m an idiot, so who knows.

Maybe I understand nothing.

To me the bottom line is if people are bothered by a character in a game being revealed as homosexual then it’s somewhat of a slippery slope as far as justifying that point of view in contrasted with how depictions of heterosexuality go completely unnoticed/uncontested in gaming

??? Other characters in COD games have literally had their wives show up in the game and these incels are raising pitchforks over a comic...

And another irrelevant thread pops up. Read through the comments and it's nothing to do with gaming, yet it's in the gaming section.

Sigh.

What in the world does “incels” have to do with this? Or do you just like to toss it around as an insult to feel hip or edgy. Personally I have a hard time taking anyone seriously that uses that term. It’s almost as bad as Yikes.

But so many people have to put forth an aggressive front online and using the term Incel only gets you laughed at and not taken seriously.

I don’t see pitchforks. I see people discussing things in a fairly peaceful manner.

I'll never see characters in a video game as sexual beings. I skip lame ass sex scenes 100% of the time.

I don't get the appeal.

Did they confirm it anywhere, cos the comic doesn't really explicitly say it? You can be that close to people without wanting to get in a romantic relationship. He could still be gay and just not have that kind of thing with this dead guy, he could still not be gay based on just that panel, whatever. Jumping the gun just for clickbait before confirmation is dumb either way. Same for jumping the gun for outrage over a gay.

How do you not see pitchforks everyone is acting like no COD character has a significant other. For a place full of supposedly smart people you can't google search. An sorry i grouped everyone into the incel category but if you go to the incel boards they have the same issues even though its a non issue.

It's like all of these 'fans' never read anything on the screen of the games, or the codexes, or all of the promo material they put out like comics and books. So sry if the term incel makes me not be taken seriously but this is in fact the type of heated conversation incels would have without even noticing the other characters in this and past COD games wives, children, etc. The only reason this is even news is because hypersensitive males in this thread are being just as hyper sensitive as the coo-coo train that is ERA.

We have very different definitions of bringing out the pitchforks I guess. I don’t see any comparison in reaction to how angry era gets about minuscule things. Yeah there are some hot takes but there isn’t the typical fuck this shit echo that reverbs from that board in angry unison. If there is someone here that is angry it is a small minority and not some huge echo to generalize the whole board.

Not seeing something the same way as you doesn’t mean there is pitchforks or outrage.

Still not understanding the incel line of thought. What does being unable to get laid have anything to do with a charcter being gay or not. I think like the term Nazi, Incel is being used too broadly without proper context. Plus it just adds to the echo of people repeating things as part of the groupthink. Your statement could hold way more weight if you weren’t trying to inject buzz words into it.

And to be fair. Not everyone reads all of the materials that go with a game. I know myself having a family of 6, I don’t have time to read everything about a game and I’m lucky to get to play as much as I can. If it is outside of the game there is little chance I will have time to read it. I have read the OW comics but that is the most recent thing. Currently trying to finish all the side quests in Witcher 3 and there is just 0 time to read everything there is.

It’s funny when all the hyper-straight preaching right-wing Reddit Boys complain about gay inclusion without ever thinking about the fact that like 99% of relationships EVER portayed in video games have been straight. That’s why they say “Oh, who cares?!”... because they’ve never had the feeling of being completely left out of an industry that they’ve invested in, worked in, and/or consumed for years and years since childhood.

I got news for y’all: gay people have been all up inside your games - designing, developing, creating, and playing - your favorite video games for a long, long, time. With that, your games have always been gay, so don’t start boycotting now. Get used to it, get out of your bubble, and get used to gay people being more represented in video games. They never think twice about a straight character being portrayed, so I don’t buy into the whole “So what, who cares?!” pitch I’ve seen them throwing around recently; if that was the case, then they’d have been saying the same stuff about straight portrayals all this time, too. Flawed logic.

More like it took this long for someone to get bored enough to bother reading a COD comic.

but no one says anything regarding the plethora of lore regarding straight characters in games.
But no one makes news or a big deal out of some shitty hetero romance lore
What is this gaming or soap opera?

It’s almost like this shit is irrelevant to the experience and it’s only brought up by developers when they feel like it’ll get them some likes on Twitter

At first you say "it took someone this long to read it" when many have. And then you state that it was brought up by the devs to get likes on twitter... show me the tweet thats not from 3 months ago and I'll believe you. Otherwise its just some butthurt alt right homophobes looking for some new shit.

It must be great to be the kind of person who can slap a label or two like “alt right” or “homophobe” on anyone who even slightly challenged your worldview and be able to completely write them off.

Yeah because even if the word homophobe or alt-right wasn't in the sentence still wouldn't have an actual response. So I might as well call it like I see it if I already know you are incapable of doing any research to backup or claims or defend your initial argument.

I'm afraid this token effort is simply not good enough. I need to know more about my fictional, virtual characters.

At the very least I should know if they're vegan or not. Knowing their views on the last Star Wars movie is important too.

I mean, they produced a comic wherein a character from a game whose gameplay loop has nothing to do with romantic relationships was revealed to be homosexual, which neither adds nor detracts anything from said game, so again I ask you...was I wrong?

One more thing: It doesn’t take any more effort to make a character gay in a video game than it does to make a straight character. So, the logic of “the developers are just trying too hard to stay relevant or significant” completely falls apart here as well. That’s just a BS excuse to not be accepting of sexual diversity in games because you think it’s “icky”.

“No one makes a big deal out of shitty hetero romances” is a pretty strange way of saying that all gay romances have to be significant or perfect in order for them to be valid and represented in games. Why can’t a character just be single, gay, fat, ugly, good, evil, whatever? I get really sick of all the subtle othering directed towards gay representation in media and entertainment. Gay people can literally be anyone in games and I, personally, would feel more represented. It’s really simple to do, it makes characters stand out, and it makes literally millions of LGBT gamers feel at least somewhat represented in a form of entertainment that they adore. With all the negative stigma around gaming, gamers should really be more understanding of the importance of positive representation in the media... :messenger_smirking:

It’s significant because the audience assumes heterosexuality because that is 99% of what is represented in games. It doesn’t have to be an intricate romance that is purely relevant to “gameplay loop” or storyline. He’s just gay, dude. What is so hard to understand about that? People assume that all characters are hetero because the vast majority of society believes that heterosexuality is the “default” sexuality, when it’s not for literally millions of people.

Yep, I was just talking about this sort of thing in the Punisher thread. Same is true for SJW and NPC, or whatever. This garbage doesn't belong in a debate, and it lowers the quality of the conversation here.

I mean...was I wrong?
Sort of. But so was Drake.

I looked on thier Twitter and see no evidence so I'm asking you to provide it but you are clearly incapable or you found what I did which was nothing.
Unless I'm mistaken, it was a "libtard" "SJW" you tuber who brought this to people's attention, not some "shitlord" "incel." Did ANYONE watch the video, here? Seriously, though, I've been watching Driftor videos for years. He's a fairly liberal guy who likely noticed the conversation surrounding Soldier 76, remembered reading the comic, and decided to make this video.

Also, what I posted earlier seems worth repeating:

Even in the comic, it's never outright stated that Prophet is gay, which is why it took so long for someone to even bring up this subject in the first place. Why Driftor is CERTAIN he's gay simply because he holds a dying friend is beyond me. This was either the writer being subtle, or a mistaken inference.
This whole topic brings to mind the interesting debate of just when should people consider something canon? Because it's never stated in the comic, but no one seems to be arguing this, even in the comments section of that video. If it's not stated directly, but the author of the comic confirms it over twitter (which I'm not even sure is true in this case), is it canon then?

I can't understand people that make sexuality the main aspect of their identity.
I really think your sexuality should be your own personal business.
But when people focus on only that aspect of themselves it starts to become a bit strange and obnoxious.

Having a video character whose identity is based around their sexuality is no different.
It is just so unimportant and can only be seen as a forced way to garner free publicity and support.
So it is no surprise people are rolling their eyes at these recent reveals. Generic video game soldier #12345 being gay or straight has literally no effect on the games whatsoever.

It's just dumbfounding that anyone gets... disturbed (?) by things like this and I do have to say (an I understand this is probably shitty) but seeing uncomfortable white people is hilarious.

Sexuality is a big part of a person’s identity. What the f are you even talking about? This is just another way of othering gay people, dude. Literally every straight person I’ve met with a significant other tells people at the nearest possible convenience that they are, indeed, straight. We ALL know the girl who you meet at the store who INSTANTLY tells you that “I have a boyfriend”... So, don’t use that excuse. It’s also BS. Telling consumers that one of their characters is gay is significant because EVERYONE already assumes they are straight. It’s the same as saying “Oh, this guy’s actually a cyborg even though everyone probably assumes he is just a human”. It’s significant because it is something that stands out past the normal assumptions that people make based on social biases that say being straight is the “default” sexuality.

I don't think it's just shitty, but it's part of the problem. I remember recently having a conversation with someone who was saying essentially "nothing is off the table when they're mad enough at someone, including slurs." And I argued against that sort of thing, and suggested they rethink that opinion. If you use someone's race to attack them, you might hit your target, but there's a lot of collateral damage. It's also weird how you would so instantly equate "oh no the gays" with "white people." I'm pretty sure black people, Hispanic people, and pretty much every race and nationality can have issues with gay people.

Regardless, this is getting even more political than a topic like this should be. If you want to continue the conversation, we should move to the politics forum. I'll just close by saying I'm not surprised you couldn't find any tweets from Bungie about Call of Duty, or Black Ops 4, or Prophet. They don't make the game. Bungie makes Destiny, and Treyarch makes Black Ops games.

Gay people are "othered" because they are the other in almost every human interaction.

Think of Japan for a moment, think about every piece of media you've ever seen on Japan and then think about how densely you basically only see Japanese people. If you were a non-Japanese in Japan you would basically fall into the same percentage of people who are homosexual in the world in relation to those who are not. Guess what? You really only see Japanese people in Japan. Your presence is that menial in relation to the whole so of course gay people are very "othered" in society.

Straight people don't go around telling people they're straight, straight people don't wear their sexual orientation on their sleeve in a lot of ways or hold parades, or change their voice, or their behavior, mannerisms, or clothing, or their style etc. Being straight isn't my identity, it's who I'm attracted to, pursue and have sex with and it doesn't go much beyond that. For homosexuals it seems to warp their very existence, it becomes who they are instead of their orientation, it becomes their identity and drives their life.

Are we going to start making threads every time a video game character is announced as gay? I don't see how or why this is threadworthy or even news.

I'm pretty sure black people, Hispanic people, and pretty much every race and nationality can have issues with gay people.

Lol I meant to say Blizzard but I only used the launcher for Destiny brain fart. And yeah you are 100% about the gay thing I shouldn't be calling out all white people when I'm black from the south with a gay brother.

I apologise. I should know better.

Are we going to start making threads every time a video game character is announced as gay? I don't see how or why this is threadworthy or even news.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm particularly looking forward to the reveal of the sexual orientation of the 2x2 block in Tetris.

I don't care where (just far)

They get hundreds of replies each time, even though the majority of those replies have nothing to do with gaming. So yeah, it’s gonna happen every time especially when it appears a majority of GAFers feels like these reveal are either token nonsense or don’t belong in their games to begin with.

Moving forward I’m going to try and be less active in said threads as it seems like no one really changes their mind and it’s just a endless volley back and forth that doesn’t lead anywhere.

All just my opinion, my perspective. I could be wrong

Everything that is worthy of a discussion has already been discussed in this thread.

Some people care about this. Some people don't care about this.

There is no point in 100 more posts asking if it matters or making fun of the situation. This topic shouldn't be in the gaming-section IMO.
