Call of Duty: Black Ops III Review Thread

Jeff never liked Zombies, and he liked AW's exomovement. So its no surprise he gave it a low score. But i never liked AW, so i guess its the opposite for me

I've been playing MP and Zombies so far and my god is it amazing.

MP is one of the smoothest in terms of connectivity. Great to see a big multiplayer game launch without any hiccups. It just feels so crystal clear to play and the weapons are a blast to use. There's a significant amount of variety here and the specialist abilities are a lot of fun - love the tempest.

Zombies is just straight up mind boggling. I could simply play this mode for days and get my money's worth. The graphics are eye searing. The atmospheres in the two maps (Shadows of Evil & Giant) are just spot on. It really draws you in. I think Zombies this year has truly surpassed everything.

I have yet to play campaign, but I'm really looking forward to having a blast with friends in Nightmare mode.

Fighting the robotic enemies sounds kind of bland. They probably should have a taken some tips from Binary Domain. That game has the best robot combat feedback.

Just like Arthur Gies gave AW a 9.0 last year vs. a 7 today. Funny change in variable.

They likely just prefer having the futuristic mobility options as a more core facet of the game design, but I'm glad this has a slightly different focus. Prefer that it's a tiny bit more grounded (pun intended), though it does still appear to have some level of the traversal mechanics, mostly wall running.

I agree with your reviews 90% of the time Daniel. Great to see!

Agreed. Though it seems this one is Brandon's review.

The first map in Zombies is amazing.

And ya NIghtmare mode. First time I have instantly returned and restarted something since Mass Effect 1 lol

I think Advanced Warfare was a little more grounded than this game. This one just kinda jumps the shark a little bit more in it's crazyness

In terms of mobility? Or general weapons and vehicles etc?

Yeah I almost always agree with Gametrailers. Favorite website at the moment.

Yeah. I've noticed Gametrailers seem to be really on point a lot of the time.

Ah alright then. I probably should have meant to say Gametrailers in general.

Fourthing this.

How does this compare to previous CoD's of the last few years score wise? From all the recent news about mods, and a ton of content I'm seriously thinking about picking this up.

Generally in terms of everything. Sure AW had the boosters, but in this game your running on walls and hoping in and out of water like a super hero

Ya and sometimes leaping out of the water the same way. Its actually a pretty cool gameplay add.

Previously I was mostly referring to the MP anyway. Not sure how I feel about that with the campaign, but judging from the two video reviews I've watched, it certainly does look fun. Over the top as ever with COD, but entertaining. I enjoyed AW's campaign but hated it's MP, hopefully I like both with this new one. Definitely looks promising.

Except it is actually balanced around Call of Duty gameplay, meaning combat is far more grounded and less messy than AW.

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
It seems after the launch of AW a lot of people on Neogaf think of it as a weak COD entry. Why is that? I thought the exo movement nullified the standard practice of camping and quick scoping, isn't that a good thing?

Glad to see the solid scores. In regards to performance, hopefully it can be patched up(meh)

From playing the beta only so far, I would disagree.

AW was jet packing madness all game. It was a breath of fresh air playing the beta, and finding out most of the gunplay was grounded.

No, because in my opinion it made matches far too chaotic and messy. Also had the worst spawning of any multiplayer game I've ever played (including other COD's).

I am not disagreeing with whether which game is better to play or not, just which one seems a bit more grounded in reality.

There's just so much content man. In general, your gonna have fun for a while just by listing off the amount of stuff packed into this game.

Well on top of the movement turning every gunfight into a jump/boost fest, the maps were not designed well enough to compensate for the new movement. This led to some terrible spawns. The gun balance was bad, even by Call of Duty standards with every lobby having people only using the Bal. Skill based matchmaking was very divisive as well, but I feel this one was more subjective.

The movement was ultimately the biggest problem though, with the dash and double jump making everything way to twitchy and allowing people to traverse distances far to easily eliminating any sort of map contol etc. Was just too chaotic and unpredictable.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that's why I love it. TDM is so crazy and makes people move around a lot more than previous COD's, I could see why it would turn off long time fans off who like to be more stationary/methodical.

On Metacritic it's currently the highest rated CoD since...MW3. Didn't realized MW3 reviewed that well honestly and I would've have expected Black Ops II was the higher rated CoD of recent releases just based anecdotally that it seems like the one fans talk about the most fondly since MW.

But Black Ops III scores may very well change since some places are holding reviews while they test the MP post-launch, so by next week we'll probably see where the dust settles on scores.

WTF!?

COD is at 85 and matching Halo 5??

COD hasn't reviewed like that in years, i'm honestly shocked, i am still thinking it may end up somewhere slightly lower than AW score wise, but for now its holding up

No problem, I can understand if you enjoy it from that POV.

A CoD reviewing in the 90's in 2015 seems kinda weird. Excited to see what those PC reviews are like though!

Not really. Advanced Warfare reviewed really well, Black Ops 3 is reviewing about the same, but with some more scores on the lower side.
