Call of Duty: WWII - Beta Impressions

Where'd you get the connection? No wonder you went 28-0 your shots look like they were killing in like 2 bullets, that never happens for me, ever.

The power of being the host. Notice: 1) He always get the first few shots off. 2) Other people's bullets were a split second behind where he was, example 2:47 someone was behind him from 5 ft away.

Yeah no idea to be honest. Like I'd had some good games and plenty of pretty mediocre ones up 'til that point and then suddenly everything just felt so damned easy. I have, like someone else mentioned, had plenty of experiences of playing the same damned people twice and having completely different experiences (getting slaughtered one round and trashing them the next). It just feels so odd and I can't really get any feel for why. As I said in the original post, I didn't really think I played that well in that match, I just got much luckier than normal. Kinda sums up why the game doesn't feel that satisfying to be honest. Everything feels like a crapshoot.

I suppose one factor is the gun/attachments - 'advanced rifling' increases the guns range which means you do more damage at range, and high caliber means that any headshot does more damage too. It definitely helps a lot with a gun with really unpredictable recoil like the M1941.

So can't hear a fucking thing. No footsteps at all. Hit detection is wonky. Aim assist seems non existent. Lag making people jump all over the place.

But hey, Destiny 2 is coming out. So there's that.

Yeah the lack of footstep noise is horrible. It's like everyone is running around in slippers. The number of times I've been like a foot from an enemy and had no idea is ridiculous. One of the biggest issues I've had playing really. It leads to so many frustrating and unfair deaths.

The no footsteps thing is a definite problem, feels like theyll address it

Yeah when TTK is this low and the map has so many routes exposing flanks, there needs to either be some way to hear or pinpoint enemies approaching from beyond the periphery of your vision - or they should raise the TTK. The minimap helps I guess.

Played for a few hours last night and this was my main issue. Maps are almost literal swiss cheese with tons of routes of in and out of each area, but with no footsteps the player just isn't given enough information to safely move around. Traversing the maps felt more like gambling rather than a calculated set of actions imo.

I don't know why CoD games keep fucking up footsteps. It was fine in classic MW1/2 guys.

German or American accent.

After playing for a couple of hours, I’m just not feeling it. I really want to like the game but I can’t. The map design is as bad as ever. Not a fan of the 3 lane design they’re going for. Too many openings for a building, narrow corridors, and spawns are still pretty bad. The SMGs continue to outclass the ARs in everyway. Also, I can’t put my finger on it but something about the shooting feels off. I’m gonna pass

I wish I could return my digital copy. The only consolation will be a decent sp campaign (hopefully).

Lol

Game breakingly awful, maybe. Hell, there's even a division that gets a reduction to fire damage, making them even worse.

Yeah I'm on your side. The fire weapons seem really week to the point where I don't entirely understand the point of them. The molotov killstreak is particularly meek. I think it's the consequence of a game with such a low TTK that you can't really afford to wait for someone to die. The effects look really good though I have to say.

Tried it out, played every CoD but Ghosts, and WWII is somehow worse than Infinite Warfare. Hopefully this franchise dies soon because it's done for.

Not liking the maps, the fast time-to-kill, and dying feels awkward.

Was about to give up on the game but then I unlocked the M1 Garand and I love using it.

Don't know though, I'll play some more over the next couple of days and decide whether or not to cancel my pre-order.

Word.

I've had pretty much a 180 experience with the game now. I had to get over the fact that another year, another COD with shitty shotguns. Now that I have I'm doing pretty good, gettin top 3 on the regular with 20+ kills usually. I did switch from domination to TDM so that might have something to do with it. I usually always play dom though.

I for one am way more hyped for this after seeing some Driftor gameplay than I was before, which was almost none at all.
I have it pre-ordered for Xbox at $49 in Canada, can't wait to see how it looks on the X. The snow map and Gibraltar look really nice.

One thing I notice is that if u dont have good teammates the game becomes so much harder

Like I need to read the map and trust my flank is covered or else im screwed

The matchmaking can be horrible sometimes

Yup this feels a lot like CoD4 or CoD2 even. Boots on the ground, guns guns guns, killstreaks are rare and not that OP.

It's nice, but as someone who love Advanced Warfare, this is not doing it for me. I already have BF1.

Still not really liking it. I much prefer the feel of BF1. However, I'm sure the single player campaign will at least be decent, so I'd say it's worth the discounted pre-order price for me.

I dont know what it is but somewhere around the time Modern Warefare 3 came out, Cod just hasnt been the same for me. From then on it got steadily worse. The maps are just terrible in this beta. Spawns all over the the place.

Does anyone know if the full game is gonna have bolt action battle rifles that aren't sniper rifles? The one thing I was hoping in this game brought over from World At War was the bolt action rifles with iron sights.

Oh how I miss MW2 SPAS. One of my favorite weapons in the cod series.

Though there was that one lever action shotgun in BO3 that I destroyed people with.

It really is the maps
A low ttk would be acceptable if maps were big

Boots to ground mises the point if the maps are small

That's why I wasn't so fast to get on the hype train for this. There is alot of nuances to MP more so then just jetpacks and wall running. Just because your glued to the ground again doesn't mean this is old school cod.

Small maps with low ttk work if players are detectable through means such as hearing footsteps. Take away that level of awareness and it turns into a clusterfuck.

I don't think a time to kill this low would be acceptable regardless, at least, if time to kill is considered in a practical sense rather than a theoretical one. It's fine to have guns that -can- kill very fast (say, two or three shots to kill) but not when it's so frequently possible to do. The lack of recoil, the lack of gun idle, the lack of need to burst fire rather than just holding the trigger, these are the major issues that make the ttk feel particularly low in this game. The only way it would feel acceptable really is it became more of a game about prediction and observation, and less of a game about twitch shooting. The ultimate truth about Call of Duty 4 was that good players knew where the enemies were by using the radar, kill feed, sound, and map knowledge, and as such they could prevent themselves from being killed from behind too often. I don't think these maps really make that viable in any way unfortunately.

The AK47 in CoD4 was a two shot kill at close range and a three at long range, yet it didn't practically have a particularly low time to kill because at anything other than short range the heavy recoil and significant gun sway meant that it was really hard to hit the necessary shots firing automatically. The guns in this game don't really have that problem, or at least, often don't. It's not uncommon for the mixture of odd netcode, recoil, auto aim and lucky headshots to mean you can down people, in the blink of an eye but moments later do the same thing and only get one hit. Making the guns too easy to shoot accurately was the main flaw of all the post CoD4 games. They took the template of the M16A4, which was massively overpowered, and applied it across the board and it wrecks the game completely. As much as I love Call of Duty 4, Infinity Ward's lack of response to blatant flaws in their game made it pretty clear the path this franchise would be on.

I know, it's CoD, and Titanfall probably spoiled me, but damn is hipfiring worthless in this game.

There are steady aim attachments that help out with that to a surprisingly fair degree. Then there's the gunslinger basic training that lets you shoot while running and diving, but there are much better basic training options, so I don't know why you'd ever pick it.

I can't actually decide how I feel about the MP of this game. Something just doesn't feel right. Yet, I really can't put my finger on it.

New Mode:

I've got mixed feelings about War. I think it has potential, but the map is small for a progression based objective game mode. I've yet to experience an exciting game with good back and forth control between the two teams. One side tends to capitulate quickly and the game comes to a conclusion sharpish - unlike Frontlines/Operations in BF1 where control points can be hard fought for.

Despite playing FPS online since Qtest I'm not particuarly a dedicated fan of COD MP so I'm no expert on TTK or technical gunplay comparisons between this and previous games. Meaning, my thoughts really won't be that in depth :)

Wait, there are no footsteps? I didn't pick up on this during the few games I was playing - didn't have my headset on. If correct, what were the developers thinking? Positional sound is key to a good online fps.

Thanks to those who mentioned the Hong Kong store method, seeing as Comcast didn't deliver.

This is the first CoD that I've played (and been interested in) since the original Black Ops, and I have to say, I am quite enjoying it. Haven't been doing particularly well for the most part, not a fan of using controllers in an FPS, but damn if I'm not having a blast nonetheless.

- is it just me or does aiming feel ... sluggish? Even at maximum sensitivity, my crosshairs don't move quite as fast as I would like; and I might be incorrect here, but it feels like there's some aim acceleration at play and it's really annoying.

- agreed that the maps feel too small. Well, Pointe du Hoc feels awfully cramped, Ardennes as well to a lesser degree. Gibraltar is a pretty good size, but I hope to see even larger designs. Maybe in the final release.

- I'm happy with the sprinting. Maybe its duration could stand an increase of another second or so, but I like that it's intentionally limited, slowing the pace and forcing players to be more mindful of when they use their speed boost. Although I could see players getting pretty frustrated on larger maps.

- love that, as far as I can tell, there's no more ridiculous lunge melee bullshit.

- some guns have a decent amount of recoil, others have next to none. Would be nice if this was more standardized (or just increase recoil across the board, raise the skill ceiling a bit).

- the TTK feels pretty low, at least compared to BF1. Not sure how it measures against recent CoD titles, though.

- killstreaks feel a lot more difficult to obtain than in previous CoDs. Awesome!

- don't like that incendiary rounds are automatically equipped each time you spawn as an Expeditionary soldier with a shotgun. I prefer regular buckshot in my Winchester and having to unload and reload after each death is an annoyance.

Can't wait to try it out on PC.

I feel like LMGs (I tried the Bren and MG-15) are really underpowered/useless here. They do decent damage, but the fire rate is way too slow so I almost always end up being outclassed by someone running an SMG/AR loadout. ADS also takes longer with an LMG, and the quickdraw attachment doesn't really even the playing field unless you're going up against another LMG user. The small map size also makes it difficult to find a stationary position and lay down fire without having an enemy show up out of nowhere.

You're probably better off going Airborne or Mountain with a shotgun. Their perks are more beneficial for shotguns, and yeah, the Incendiary shells seem to be less consistent/straight up worse than the regular buckshot.

If there are footstep sounds, they have to be mixed low as hell. Couldn't hear anything with my headphone setup.

CoD games in general have had extremely spotty footstep sounds since Blops1. Some are better and some are worse, but none of them have been as clear as MW2 imo.

I'm enjoying the game more today but I've haven't had much fun with War mode. I seem to always end up with the weaker team with two or three snipers that refuse to change gun whenever the objective is in close quarters.

I'm mostly liking it, but it's weird how they seem to have copied the worst aspects of battlefield (unintuitive menus, the way classes are set up, the feel of basic movement).

TTK is slightly too fast, which is a shame but not really surprising. Maybe next year.

The complaints about footsteps are surprising, honestly thought they were more noticeable here than in past games. I can only assume those of you asking for elephant feet and fewer flanking routes are the dirtiest of campers :P

OH I almost forgot but they've completely fucked up recoil and it makes some guns really unpleasant to use. In past games if you just hold the trigger your aim will move up and stay there. In this game your aim moves back down a fraction of a second after you stop shooting... except you were probably adjusting for recoil while firing so now you have to readjust in the other direction or suddenly you're looking at the floor. Really stupid change.

I think there's something else with the autoaim that's off as well, but I can't put my finger on it... Maybe I just need more time to adjust.
