Canceled - Nintendo Games

Anyone mention Buggie Boogie? It was being made by Angel Studios (now part of Take 2) under EAD and Mr. Miyamoto's supervision

http://ign64.ign.com/objects/000/000407.html

From IGN

Originally a battle game with dark combat units that included tanks and heavy artillery units, Buggie Boogie went a long way since its grungy, militaristic origins. The game was turned into a far more cute, colorful game with bright primary colors, Super Mario 64-style, rural backgrounds, and a harmless facial expression on one car's 'hood and grill.'

Shortly after the style change, the game disappeared and was never seen again.

There's also Jungle Emperor Leo for the N64

This was supposed to actually be a pretty big title for the N64. I recall Nintendo had big ambitions for it.

From IGN:

http://ign64.ign.com/objects/003/003766.html

Cancelled game based on Osamu Tezuka's famous anime series (Junguru Taitei, aka Kimba: The White Lion). Following game creator Shigeru Miyamoto's admission that the project had run into "some trouble" at E3 1998, Miyamoto hinted that the project may be on indefinite hold. When asked what he would consider to be his biggest failure, the Mario-creator answered: "I cannot tell you specifically what title it was, but a while ago we asked a popular celebrity to become a game director -- and together with me he was going to make a game. But that celebrity was too busy to concentrate on game-design, so even though we spent a lot of time working on the game, we could not release it to the market."

Then there's Kirby Bowl for the N64, which was actually the only playable title for the N64 at Shoshinkai 1995 (the N64's unveiling) along with Super Mario 64.

The original game was supposed to be a 4-player battle game of sorts with randomly generated environments IIRC. This may/may not have morphed into Kirby's Air Ride, released many years later.

There's also FX Fighter for the SNES, which was supposed to be Nintendo's answer to Virtua Fighter on the Genesis. It was part of a partnership with GT's game division. It used the Super FX chip but was never released.

FX Fighter came out for the PC and it was supposedly awful.

N64 has to take the crown for most cancelled Nintendo games. So much potential and then so much disappointment with that console. =/ Mother 3 was the huge one for me. I'm not the biggest fan of Earthbound, but I followed Mother 3's development very closely. The cancellation of Mother 3 was one of my greatest disappointments of that era.

Other games have already been mentioned, like Echo Delta and Jungle Emperor Leo (what an awesome license, I never understood why Nintendo didn't do anything with it). I also wish the 64DD had come out on time and actually been somewhat successful. All the things that Nintendo talked about doing with the rewritable parts of the disks sounded so interesting. Plus, remember when DQVII was heavily rumored for the DD? Funny that this topic came up now as it's been almost exactly ten years since Enix announced DQVII was going to PSX. I think that was a bigger defection than Final Fantasy. If Sega or Nintendo had managed to get DQ things in Japan would turned out quite differently. Even after Nintendo lost DQVII, there were still rumors of a DQ Gaiden for the 64, but eventually those faded as well. =(

Damn, didn't realize so many games didn't actually make it. Sad part is, alot of these games look intresting (Harrier 2001, Earthbound, the many racing games, etc).

Nintendo should have just made the N64 a disc-drive based system, even if it was just the 64MB 64DD discs.

I still think it would have been fast enough for Mario 64 (since apparently Zelda 64DD was at time in development for the 64DD) ... and 64MB was still *a lot* of space in those days and the discs were cheaper to manufacture than cartridges.

They wouldn't have gotten FF7 or anything like that, but it would've been a more attractive format for publishers for sure with a reasonable amount of space.

Before someone says "that was just a SGI demo, not for Nintendo", wouldn't the best reason to be making an SGI demo be for the SGI-development-system-powered N64? :)

As for another one... I didn't see Viewpoint 64 mentioned here. The original Viewpoint was so awesome, it's too bad Viewpoint 64 was never released...

that realtime playable demo was made for highend SGI Onyx workstations with RealityEngine graphics board, not for an SGI development system for N64 which would've been much less powerful.

canceled games for Nintendo systems that I wanted or would've wanted:

-Seiken Densetsu: The Emergence of Excalibur for the Famicom Disc System. would've been far larger, far more eleborate than Seiken Densetsu / Final Fantasy Adventure

- the U.S. NES version of Gradius II which in Japan on the Famicom used a very powerful custom Konami chip more advanced than the then-latest MMC chips.

-Hellraiser by Wisdom Tree for the NES. would've used a fast CPU in the cartridge to reach near 16-bit quality audio-visuals.

-Seiken Densetsu 2 / Final Fantasy Adventure II / Secret of Mana on SNES CD-ROM

-Pilotwings 2 for the SNES, early 1990s, not a confirmed game but was mentioned in EGM IIRC

-Falcon 3.0 by Spectrum Holobyte for the SNES

-the Pilotwings by Factor 5 for the GameCube

-R-Type II for the SNES. changed into Super R-Type with only half of R-Type II levels.

-a straight conversion of TMNT arcade for the SNES, instead we got a version of TMNT2 Turtles in Time.

-Axeley 2 (rumored ? )

-Mother 3 / Earthbound 64 for N64

-Robotech: Crystal Dreams for N64

-Rev Limit for N64

-Rave Racer for N64 (we got Ridge Racer 64 years later instead)

-the larger version of Zelda (whatever it was) that was intended for the N64 64DD

-Gendai Dai-Senryaku: Ultimate War for Nintendo 64

- another war game for N64, it was of the Famicom Wars series, edit: 64 Wars (duh)

there are so many other games that I cannot think of right now, it's not even funny. will edit in more as i remember.

a wonderful webpage with a HUGE list of unreleased NES/Famicom games:

how about the stateside release of Sin & Punishment? that was supposedly all ready to ship before being canned. man, i would do anything for that game about now....

eh, i can only hope for a relase on VC...

Rave Racer and Ace Driver for N64 were both actually announced iirc. Namco also had announced Ridge Racer for Saturn too.

DOA64 probably would've cleared a million in just the USA... too bad talks broke down between Acclaim and Tecmo, the N64 base was really starving for a half way decent 3D fighter (no disrespect to Genki).

FWIW, I've also heard Tales of Symphonia started life as a 64DD game... wouldn't surprise me really though.

i either forgot or was unaware of Ace Driver for N64. dang.

I do remember Ridge Racer was concidered for the Saturn and maybe even the 3DO, and it was officially announced for the PC for certain, with no 3D acceleration, for Pentium PCs.

That Kirby Adventure (GC) looks awesome and using the Smash Bros Melee engine if im not mistaken.

Is this the same Kirby game for the Cube that featured an element of stacking characters? I remember seeing pictures in Nintendo Power of Kirby with three other characters stacked on top of him. It was supposed to be one of the key aspects of the game.

Nonetheless, this YouTube video looks great. Oh well!

Nintendo had it at either E3 05 or 04 and they didn't like the responce it got from the tiny little booth in the corner they had set up for it.

Makes me want to kill. Kill!

I can't believe how much promising/interesting stuff on N64 was either canned or moved to a different platform.

Onimusha -> Moved to PS1, then PS2
Resident Evil Zero -> Moved to GCN
Mother 3 -> Canned and later rebuilt for GBA
Eternal Darkness -> Moved to GCN
Robotech: Crystal Dreams -> Canned
Echo Delta -> Canned
Viewpoint 2064 -> Canned
Kirby Bowl -> Possibly moved to GCN as Kirby Air Ride
Dead or Alive 64 -> Canned
Jungle Emperor Leo -> Canned
Buggie Boogy -> Canned
Ghouls 'n Ghosts 64 -> Possibly moved to DC, then PS2 as Maximo
Fire Emblem -> Canned
Catroots -> Canned
Rev Limit -> Canned
Blade & Barrel -> Canned
Dinosaur Planet -> Moved to GCN and transformed into Star Fox Adventures
RiQa -> Canned, then kinda rebuilt as Rogue Ops for last-gen
Mini Racers -> Canned
Dragon Quest VII -> rumoured only, then released on PS1
Freakboy -> Canned
Tomb Raider 64 -> Canned
Harrier 2001 -> Canned
Rave Racer -> Canned, kinda resurfaced as Ridge Racer 64
Ace Driver -> Canned
64 Wars -> Canned
Final Fantasy VII -> Moved to PS1 really early (probably conceptual phase)

Looking back on it now, it really shows how much potential was wasted. I guess it was caused by a combination of choosing the more expensive cart format, Nintendo being less generous towards third-parties, them killing off the console too early in it's life and the vastly increasing popularity of the PS1 during the N64's lifespan. Also, the console had some technical issues in regards to graphics which probably made it more difficult to develop for, the carts didn't offer too much space and the general demographic of N64 owners which developed over time wasn't interesting enough to many devs.

The console may have sold quite well, turned in a good profit and had several true gems in it's line-up, but it's clear that it could've been so much more (btw, I never owned one myself during it's active years from 1996-1999).

Square did confirm in dev docs for FF7 that it did indeed start off as a N64 project. It was posted on GAF a while ago.
It started off as a SNES game actually, using rendered spritework. Never was intended for N64 though as far as I know.

DQ7 on the other hand was actually announced for the 64DD initially.

Parts of this went into Pikmin iirc.

...the 64DD was also intended to have it's own version of the Virtual Console, allowing users to download Famicom games and burn them to 64Ds.

There were also rumors that SNK was interested in porting their HNG64 lineup to N64 early on (Samurai Spirits 64 & Road's Edge specifically).

There was a Smash Bros sequel planned/in development for the N64 at one point, but we can assume that became Melee. I remember there being a survey or something in Japan, asking who gamers would like to see in the game.

No it wasn't. Master Quest was a mere remix of OoT. The real 64DD Zelda was never released.
Miyamoto says Ura Zelda was Master Quest.
The original 64DD OOT's content was cannibalised into cartridge OOT and MM.

Wow. I had no idea so many games were originally planned for N64. I can't even imagine what the gaming scene would be like today had Nintendo just went with CD's instead of cartridges. Crazy stuff.
