Capcom: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies hitting the West [Digital Only Confirmed]

Megaman Legends 3 back in production confirmed! Early 2014 digital only release!

Ironically they're sitting on the finished Prototype Version demo for no reason. Call it Mega Man Legends: Barrett's Adventure, charge $15 for it and call it a day.

It's just you. While the games are technically kinda episodic in nature, they're still released bundled together, and I see no reason why this would be any different.

Sven 's quote make it seem otherwise.

Worth whining about.

In the other dozen topic about it sure. But this one should be focused on Capcom. If this game does not get bought by people whining about Nintendo's accounts we will never see another AA game in the west let alone retail.

Not a fan of how Nintendo does their DRM for eShop purchases, but hell, I'll take it. Would not have surprised me in the slightest if Capcom decided not to release this in English. If this is what it takes to get this game here, so be it. Just glad to be able to play some new Ace Attorney by the end of the year (unless there's a delay).

It's only to make things more ironic when it ends up being priced at $40.

There was a recent case in Germany involving the resale of ebooks and audiobooks where the court came to the conclusion:

“Given the lower price of an audiobook, or e-book compared to the physical work, the average customer will be satisfied with the use of the file for his own purposes only.” (emphasis added).

If this is indicative of the prevailing legal thinking on the sale of intangible goods in Europe (and I hope that it is!) it may well mean that publishers have to price digital-only releases appropriately lower than their physical counterparts, as it is assumed that the average consumer is only accepting the restrictions on secondary sales due to the lower price.

Here a neat blog post on the topic: linky.

So is it just me that thinks this will be episodic? Or are we just going to whine about Nintendo's account system?

Will post it again since new page.

I think this hints very much at a reduced price compared to a retail release. Episodic doesn't make any sense.

It is focused on Capcom. On Capcom's choice to only use Nintendo's download service to distribute the game. If that happens, then they made the wrong decision.

I don't think people would be nearly as furious if Nintendo's online account management system wasn't a completely unreliable mess.

I see where you're coming from, but so far Nintendo is the only company that did a genarational shift and completely brought over the digital purchases from last gen to this gen (on both consoles by the way, DS -> 3DS and Wii -> WiiU*), even without a propper account system. Sony didn't with PSP to Vita and won't from PS3 to PS4 (at all for now). Don't know what MS will offer, I don't follow the Xbox rumors closely enough.

As long as they don't fuck up I have no reason to mistrust them as a consumer. That's how I see it.

*sans Lost Winds. I'm still waiting for a solution.

The only thing that bothers me is that I won't be able to have the complete physical collection now, which really is a bummer as I'm kinda OCD about that, but that won't ever get in the way of my excitement, nor will it prevent me from enjoying the game. Day Fucking ONE, and if they do midnight release, Minute Fucking ONE. I actually thank Capcpom, I'm glad it's coming.

Downloaded PSP, PSOne games and Minis don't work on the Vita?

Wrong decision for who? Capcom? Gamers?
For both.

So yeah here are the three negative things I have to say about this matter.

1. Capcom has definitely lost faith in the series in the West. They are not confident that the sales would justify a physical release. I hope the price does not remain $40 (although I personally would gladly pay it, not many people want to pay the full $40 for a digital release on the 3DS.)

2. If this game is digital only, then WHY DID CAPCOM NOT TAKE THIS ROUTE WITH AAI2? I can't imagine that the DSiWare route would have been too terribly different than the 3DSWare one... The same goes with Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney (although I technically think that one's in Level-5's ballpark, not Capcom's.)

3. Why in the world is THIS GAME, OF ALL GAMES, the one chosen for DD? It's the most anticipated Ace Attorney game ever, with the return of Phoenix Wright to his proper position, the capabilities of the 3DS as opposed to the regular DS, the engine reworks... again I would understand if this were a DD for AAI2 or PW vs AA, but the next true iteration (and most reworked iteration)of Ace Attorney is the one that gets sent to digital? Seriously?

I will buy this game day one no doubt, but I am really disappointed with Capcom.

Maybe I am? idk. Those basic rights are nice, but in the end this is all about the game right? If I must have to deal with a shitty digital platform to play a game I want... then I'll usually bite. How is this different from you going through loopholes to get certain music games on ios?

If you don't care about what others perceive to be basic rights, that's your prerogative. Openly insulting people with viewpoints other than yours is not acceptable.

Anything I might have done re: iOS is still tied to an iTunes account. I have receipts for everything and can redownload at will. What does that have to do with anything?

... Fuck, I'm starting to think that after Telltale's games (especially The Walking Dead) Capcom now wants to try the same with Phoenix Wright. Well, it at least makes sense for that setup specifically and it probably WILL help for a physical release eventually (he says all of that stuff, yet each Telltale game hits retail in a compiled form anyway), but that actually bugs me more. I'd rather just get it all together.

Well, I guess if they go that route that one's actually a simpler boycott without jeopardizing the future of the series: don't buy at all until the final episode is out, then get everything all at once.

EDIT: OTOH this plausibly is more a method to just get the game localized "faster", in that we get it as they go along. Well, I'll see how I feel when it's out, but I feel like Phoenix Wright games are ones I'd rather just barrel through.

Where did I say that none of them work?

I see where you're coming from, but so far Nintendo is the only company that did a genarational shift and completely brought over the digital purchases from last gen to this gen (on both consoles by the way, DS -> 3DS and Wii -> WiiU*), even without a propper account system. The way you typed it makes it sound like every game wouldn't work, which isn't the case.

You also gotta pick your fights. I'm all for fighting the man, but boycotting AA5 won't do jack shit besides lowering the chance of AA6 coming to the west.

The thing is, it always comes down to, well it sucks, but I wanna just play it. There's almost never a time where people say I'd rather do without because that's their only option to play it. It doesn't matter if it's this or any other game. People just cave and pay for it and it slowly just tells companies that people will put up with it.

That's very broad talk. What exactly are you speaking about?

A vast number of things that isn't limited to games such as DLC that's on a disc, online pass for online games, the type of DLC that gets released, the cost of SMS messaging, bandwidth caps, DRM on a vast number of content, and so forth. There's a number of things people say that sucks and then click "Buy" anyway which just further makes these practices acceptable.

As much as I'd like a physical release in NA, I'll settle for a digital-only release. At least we're getting the game.

I'd be much more gung-ho on digital 3DS games if Nintendo would fix its account system.

There was probably a good chance that the game wouldn't have been localized at all had the eShop not existed. I don't see how no game > game.
Actually it's starting to look more and more likely it's get game faster but digital only and piecemeal OR get game later but all at once, maybe physically. In fact I'm more optimistic for a physical release if these hypothetical episodes do very well, but eurgh.

Oh God... yeah, if they go episodic, I think I really am out. Or at least, I wouldn't even consider touching that shit until the last episode is out.

You know, it not releasing at all is what some people would prefer to happen, just like Bayonetta 2.

Sorry, no. A retail release would necessitate changes to code, another QA pass, a seperate submission to NOA/NCL, 45 days of manufacturing/shipping time and significant physical COGs that would require pricing that is different than what we will be doing.

So is going to be U$ 20/30?

I don't know, I think they'd have already said it right in this PR if it were really episodic. With phrases like "starting from Autumn 2013" too, no? I don't think it's episodic.

Fuck this shit. I'll buy it, even at $50, but they're losing a lot of sales by making this stupid decision. It's useless to complain now, as Sven said it's impossible to change it without delaying it, but I have this tiny ray of hope that they reconsider and do the right thing.

Alas, I'll still be there for them...

...unless they turn to this shit (which IMO isn't happening; no way). I can not tolerate episodic releases.

Although I played and loved every one of these games, they don't really have any replay value. Once you know how the case plays out the suspense is gone. A digital only release means you cant sell it (obviously), so in my case I'll wait for the price to drop.

Same. Even if it was episodic in nature, the eShop makes me not want to buy it.

Where are you getting this? They clearly say: "Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today confirmed that Phoenix Wright™: Ace Attorney™ - Dual Destinies will be available to purchase digitally on Nintendo 3DS™ across Europe and North America in Autumn 2013. "

Wait, the game will have a retail release in JP, right?
I know what I'll put in my collection instead, even if I have to double dip and import it. :D
