Capcom, Grin's Bionic Commando Sells A Meager 27K in U.S.

As it has been said in many, many reviews - the swinging mechanic is great, the story, bullshit purple fog and everything else is just a big "What the fuck?"

Spoilers:

Your missing wife? She's your arm.
Because it needs to be said again - fuck this game.

This is why there needs to be variable pricing in games. I would have totally bought this if it was $29.99, but $59.99? No dice.

Red Faction Guerilla should probably be $44.99, and it might get hammered hard for also being priced at $59.99, but I could also see them getting a lot of sales because theres nothing else out right now and it is a legitimately good multiplayer game.

Why the hell should Red Faction be cheaper? It's got a big single player component and an immense fully fleshed out multiplayer component. If only all games had as much value as RFG.

As for Bionic Commando, it's just not a good game. I'm like 3/4 of the way through and it just puts me to snoozeville every time I play. It's not hard, it's just dry and lifeless.

That spoiler is the craziest fucking thing I've ever heard. :lol :lol

Why didn't you jerks buy it? It's the best game I've played all year! ;_;

There's nothing really wrong with the game, just the price. Bionic Commando like a whole lotta other games just don't hit my 'day one never mind the price!' button. Bionic Commando is a game I'm in no hurry to play, so I'll wait for the inevitable price cut a few months down the road. Unfortunately for Capcom and Grin, this sentiment is shared by the vast majority of gamers. There's plenty of interest for the game, but people aren't going to buy these non-AAA games for the full price.

Umm, Prototype is out and it is the game I am mostly worried about actually.

It's weird, isn't it? Capcom usually markets its games pretty well. RE5 got loads of TV ads, billboards and whatnot, and that's not even a game that you have to market well. BC on the other hand got zero marketing. I didn't even know the game was coming out that week and I practically live on forums.

"Capcom and Grin's Bionic Commando franchise sold just 27,000 units in its opening month in the U.S., despite the title's roots in Capcom's classic swing-and-shoot platforming game from the 1980s, research firm NPD Group told Gamasutra on Monday.

Bionic Commando sold that amount at U.S. retail from its May 19 release to the end of NPD's retail calendar on May 30, across both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game. NPD Group said it could not disclose the exact split between Xbox 360 and PS3 sales."

lock if old.

People must have thought it was for the Wii.

figures... IMO... this game wasn't fun... the original was fun and challenging... but this game had a very strong feeling of "lame".

IMO... they should have just left bionic commando for the digital market... this new BC was reaaaallly bad.

The game was marketed fine.

It just didn't click with anyone; it's the very definition of a mediocre game. Poor gameplay mechanics and horrendous level design are just two of its faults.

I had a bad feeling about this game the first time it showed up on the 1up Show a while back, and even when it reappeared on Co-op it looked very iffy. Never clicked with me, and I'm a huge BC fan.

So hey, I've asked this in several topics and never has anyone replied. So here I ask for a fourth time:

Who the flying fuck was the guy in the white hood? The dude who snipes the gun out of whatsherfaces hand and who shows up near the end? They never fucking revealed who he was or what he was doing.

and what the hell was the thing they kept trying to get? They never explained what it was, or what it did, or why everything would be lost if the imperials got it.

and what does the last transmission say? The one in morse code?

I still don't know why Capcom didn't do this in-house

Same here when they announced it i thought it was in house, but outside development + no proper demo meant that i waited glad i did. As it looks like the price will be low very soon.

I'll buy when it's about £14.99.

I've never seen a commercial for this game or an ad anywhere

Just cause it sold less theres like tons of idiots in this thread ragging on the game. Its not that bad a decent 7 and more unique than most games with its swing mechanic.

Yeah and their reasons for hating on a game they haven't even fucking played is retarded.

"OH GOD THE MAIN CHARACTER LOOKS LIKE KORN. $14.99 OR LESS PLS"

NeoFAQs m i rite?

This is what I'm planning on doing.

I have a huge backlog right now, so this can wait.

Wanna know bad marketing? 6s and 7s, shitty art design plastered all over the existing ads, and the multiplayer demo. There you go. Completely destroyed.

I'm pretty sure there was little press, even less advertising, and all of the publicity for this game essentially evaporated and went completely unsupported after the release of re-armed. Even a good chunk of the people who frequent this site had little to no idea that it was released when it was.

Also, what exactly is wrong with the character design? I failed to see how it's worse than most all other game character design jobs in recent memory. Are people seriously ragging on it because he's white and has dreads?

yeah stop badmouthing this game!

you people realise it has big flying mechs that hadouken you right?! i mean they actually hadouken!

Those things pissed me the fuck off until I realized you could shoot them while they were hadoukening to stop them.

I thoroughly enjoyed Bionic Commando Rearmed. After seeing what Grin did with that game, I was looking forward to the release of the new Bionic Commando in stores, but I held off on a purchase after seeing some of the reviews which weren't very complimentary to it.

Although there was a multiplayer demo on Xbox 360, I've never seen a demo of any sort on PS3. It would've been nice to have an early demo to spark interest in the game, particularly if it showcased the single-player game which is probably the main reason why most people were interested in BC to begin with. Multiplayer may have turned out very good in the game, but I don't know very many people who were really looking forward to this game for its multiplayer mode (always seemed more like an "added extra feature" rather than something integral to the game). I know that I would've gotten it for the single-player game, but there was no demo that could serve to "disprove" some of the negativity I saw in the reviews.

As many others in this thread have mentioned, the game was quietly released last month with virtually no marketing support. I haven't seen a single ad for the game on TV. I remember seeing ads for such legendary gaming classics as Battle of the Bands and PopStar Guitar, but Capcom couldn't be bothered to muster anything for Bionic Commando. Between no PS3 demo and no visible mainstream advertising, it's as if Capcom lacked faith in the product and just "sent it to die".

The game's not any good, but only selling 270,000 is a big surprise to me.

After seeing the numbers that were reported, I think the design team would be dancing a freakin' jig if the game sold 270,000.

Wow, I wonder how many copies they needed to sell to break even? I'm guessing they recouped their pizza delivery charges at this point.

Poor Ben Judd :(

Why didn't Capcom do this in-house? Gee, I don't know, maybe they were making Resident Evil 5? Do you understand how massive a project that game was?

The fucked up part is GAF is going to do a silly ass LTTP thread months from now and slapping each other on the back saying the game was so cool and overlooked etc.

BC is AWESOME

I had fun with the game, but I don't blame anyone for not buying it. Why they abandoned the unique gameplay framework of the original for a generic, linear shooter I don't know.

Brilliant!

Also, the soundtrack is so fucking good in this game.

And it really does have it's moments. The end is not one of them, but there's some great fun to be had in Bionic Commando. People should really try it before shitting on it.

I rented a copy and made it just under halfway. I was having fun with it, but I don't think it is $60 worth of fun. I will buy it if the price drops to $30 over the next couple months, but if it doesn't by September, we are into holiday gaming season and I'll be too busy with the heavy hitters.

The problem is plain and simple that the game is a piece of shit. Not fun to play in the slightest, clunky, bad graphics, low budget, full price, TERRIBLE focus tested designs, terrible level design and just completely unappealing. This game deserved to bomb as it serves as the perfect example of what happens when you outsource a Japanese IP to a Western developer who doesn't understand it and then you give them no money.

I mean seriously this was bad, brought it back after an hour and a half and I can normally find redeeming qualities in most games. Just such a terrible, terrible game. I'm not surprised the boses in Japan had no faith in it. I mean my GOD it was bad.

I mean they had the opportunity to make something great and revive a classic IP, but instead both Capcom and GRIN fucked it straight to hell. I doubt another Bionic Commando will ever be made by anyone ever again now. Game was just not fun or fluid, actually felt like work to play and was not rewarding in the slightest.

EDIT: Should say the only redeeming quality was the music, it was pretty good. Other than that though, yuck!

No, unfortunately that isn't going to happen. It's a "bomba" and all that. Yes the soundtrack is surprisingly bad ass and a lot better than the amazing BCR soundtrack, in my opinion. Great game that is being unfairly piled on.

I blame the demo as well. That's the problem with demos: it gives people a taste of something, and they feel satisfied with that small taste. Despite how much people demand a demo or beta, there are more people who would buy a game blind, with a few trailers, than they would after playing the demo.

The sheer amount of hate and backlash in this thread is incomprehensible.

I can think of many complaints for BC but "not being fluid" is absolutely not one of them. The fluidity/smoothness of the swinging and movement is unlike almost any 3rd person action game this generation. The level designs are pretty good too, for a game based on swinging and fast midair motion. The level with the hadouken-robots still leaves an impression on me, personally.
