Capcom to PC gamers: Buy SSF4 Arcade Edition

Have you done the challenge trials? They teach you how to do every character's unique moves and a few combos.

So, the only fighter I ever got really into was Tekken, with the third title in the series. I learned it pretty well, the timing of the different moves, the default 10 hit combos of various characters, juggle combos, custom combos, throws, King's and Nina's and Anna's multiple throw combos, etc. I didn't just button mash my way to victory or learn the moves by heart and do them over and over hoping they will work, I just knew the game well, what to do and when, from the simplest punch to the strongest special move.

But I don't "get" Street Fighter at all. All I ever do is almost to button mash my way to a victory the Very Easy AI lets me off with because anything harder eventually kicks my ass without showing me what I'm doing wrong. I don't understand how I'm supposed to learn the balance of the moves with the hitboxes and priorities that barely resemble the action that you see on screen, I don't understand the design behind the button combinations for the various moves as I'm trying the usual quarter circle, back forward, forward forward and then attack stuff and they only seem to work for a particular few characters with the rest barely pulling anything off. I don't even know how to do the throws, lol.

This should help a lot.

First thing you should do is, pick a character you're comfortable with and also what kind of style you like to play. Do you like to play defensive or rushdown. Once you've gotten a feel for what type of character you like to play then settle on a character.

Second you need to learn fundamentals. Defense is absolutely crucial. Of course you have to judge your opponent, This ranges from
A) Learn how to block. Do not abuse your reversals. In a mid-level match if you get baited, you've pretty much lost a quarter to 40% of your life if you whiff. Do not reversal Ultra on your wakeup, this leads to death 90% of the time.
B) Know when to jump, if your opponent cannot anti-air properly abuse crossups and jump-ins. Also vice-versa you need to know how to defend against them. In order to do this, you need to recognize the spacing and your opponents actions. If they whiff a normal when they've scored a knockdown they are either setting up a safejump/crossup setup or baiting you.
C) Know how to throw/tech LP+LK. Recognize tick throws(it takes some getting used to). Do not spam LP+LK, this usually results in you being counterhit or getting hit by a meaty setup.

Those are some of the things I think are universal to all characters, there's alot more to learn but definitely get the basics down and take each step from there. Like learning BnB combos and anti-airs as well as FADCing.

So no one took the plunge and tried the current DLC with the Steam version? I'm still not convinced there's a technical reason why it won't work.
edit: ok so apparently there is tech reason and this won't work.

Do fighting game fans even realize what they are doing when they throw around jargon like this?

It takes too much time to talk about FGs related stuff without using the lingo.
It's like if i'm talking about soccer i don't want to explain what a goal or an offside is.

But the person asking the question is claiming to be fairly new to Street Fighter. If you a person is asking you teach them soccer, do you immediately just start spouting plays or do you first explain the rules?

A lot of those apply to Tekken as well. Tekken doesn't really have much of an airgame though. FADCing is in the training mode. Also worth mentioning that SSFIV AE has 2D hitboxes.

doesnt it plug into a wiimote and not via USB?

Yes, but you can connect a Wiimote to a PC through a bluetooth receiver.

I know you can get the TvC stick to work with vanilla, but AE is more picky so I'm not sure if it's the same or not.

I have the Mayflash USB adapter and that's primarily for PC but also works on PS3.

And that works in Arcade Edition? Sorry but I just want to be sure it works before I recommend it to someone :p

EDIT: Nevermind. I just bought it off of Steam.

SteamID is the same as my GAF. Also I joined the steam group SSF4AEGAF. I am on the East Coast.

I am honestly surprised that the tutorial from Blazblue Continum shift isn't suggested more for new players. I learned way more from that than any forum post or site. It's a bunch of great info all in one spot so you don't have to jump from source to source and try to patch the information together.

Gamefly that bitch.

? Blazblue Continuum tutorial is good for this game? I haven't seen it so I'm asking seriously, do the mechanics of that game match this pretty well?

I got it! My 4870 and Phenom II X4 work pretty damn well. I got 110+ fps in the benchmark, wasn't expecting it to be so high. Res is 1440x900 though. I got wrecked online. :-(. Need to practice more. Games went pretty smooth except one that kept stuttering. Love it. I have this for 360, PC and 3DS (non-AE, of course)... I'm obsessed.

I am so rusty at this game now. I can't believe how far I've fallen. I used to be okay! Once.

I still have yet to play any of you, even though I'm in the GAFAE Steam group. Sup with that.

The mechanics are different in ways but they do share many mechanics. At a basic level you need to be familiar with the systems of SF4 so you can see what is the same and what is different, but it has a lot of great advice.

You can just watch it on Youtube. I think this is the start of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16uJbXiHc5E

I set down one morning and played through it (I rented it from Gamefly) and took notes and it took me about 3 hours to complete it and take notes.

EDIT: Here is an example of the notes I took from the tutorial
Blocking
Crouching guard is for when your opponent is grounded and Standing guard is for when your opponents is in the air. Then you only need to know which of your opponent’s ground attacks hit High. More than likely the overhead attacks will come from the standing position. So when an opponent is crouching you only need to worry about blocking since they cannot do an overhead or a throw. Only look for those when the opponent stands.

Execution
If you allow yourself to become tense, or press buttons too quickly, you will not be consistent. Be careful and exact in your motions. Eventually familiarity will lead to speed.

Offensive Spacing
-Offensive spacing moves are used with the intent that they will hit the opponent, establishing the range at which a combo can be begun, and simultaneously starting a combo.
-You want only the tip of the offensive spacing attack to hit the opponent.

Defensive Spacing
Used to keep you opponent at a distance.
- You might think of it as making a preemptive attack or setting a trap for your opponent. Something to make them think twice about approaching you.
- The most effective attacks for this are ones where you will remain safe even if you miss, or your opponent blocks them. Thus attacks that are rather fast and have long reach work best.
- If you have a defensive spacing move that has better reach, or is faster, than your opponent’s, that gives you an edge in battle. Keep this in mind as you plan your moves.

well, i'm just gonna put my 2 cents in this thread since i dont want to make a new topic

i'm sure this is just me here and the fact it's 12:30am, but i'm getting shit online finds
i found a whopping 2 green bar connections and i was not able to connection to any of them
i joined, 1 yellow bar player, the second time i faced him, it was an orange bar

the game is unplayable with a yellow/orange bar, even for a shitty player like me, i cant make the most basic of moves and the lag was terrible

only one hour in, and i am not amused

also, there's no way to change the region i'm guessing, because i see a USA flag and i dont see anywhere to change it (the gfw page lets u put a string in ur location which does nothing except gives u a description)
it would be nice to have a canadian flag there

You'll get alot more matches if you create a room. Most people seem to prefer to search for games, so the number of people searching for games outnumbers the people creating the games. So just create a room, or turn on fight request and wait for them to find you. I get to play alot more matches this way.

All up for a 4 pack if anyone needs one (am UK GAF).
Bit of a noob when it comes to all this so can anyone confirm the Saturn USB pad will work ok with this pre-patch

Yeah, I did this last night and it went pretty well. One thing I like that wasn't in the 3DS version is that after the match you can choose to go back to the main menu instead of just dropping back into arcade.

Ugh, finally!

TItle Update for Arcade Edition PC - Almost There
วันพุธ, กรกฎาคม 13, 2011, 9:05 หลังเที่ยง [General]

We had called out earlier this week that a title update for Arcade Edition PC would be public by early this morning. We want to let you guys know that the title update has been sent to our QA team to test and give Microsoft the final thumbs up, after which the update will go live at 2 am PST tomorrow morning (Thursday 7/14). We apologize for the wait, and are working furiously to finalize the title update so we can get it pushed to you all.

I am selling my PS3 version of AE after playing it on the PC. I can honestly say I just love the art style ( w/ the ink affect ) and I just sit and marvel at how clean the game looks maxed out. I honestly thought that there wasn't going to be a difference. I am really glad I double dipped and got the PC version.

To the Steam group admins, can you make it so anyone in the group can post announcements?
That way when anyone wants to play they could make an announcement, it'd show up for everyone in the group and it'd probably be easier to find someone to play (or even get some people together in an Endless Battle/Tourney room)

If announcement abuse happens you can always make the group invite-only.

Most likely not without some tweaking.
I had to get XInput on my game folder for it to recognize my Arcade Stick as a 360 controller, and thus allowing me to actually use it.

My D level Ken just beat a B level Claw on Xbox Live.

I didn't deserve the win.

Perhaps it's a case of RTFM but I'll ask anyway:

- How can you "alpha counter"?
- How can you walk only bu little steps

(I saw them in the video above)

The way AE handles matchmaking is just annoying for someone like me who is still around 400 PP. If I create a ranked lobby, there should be an option to make sure only those around my player points range enter the lobby. Instead, if I win ONE game (against someone with similar player points) and then create a lobby, the matchmaking assumes I'm ready to take on players with 2000+ PP and opens the floodgates for them to come on in. I also found this annoyance present on PS3. That stuff doesn't make me less awful at this game, Capcom.

I have no idea what you mean with either of those. Care to point out where in the video you spotted them?

In terms of Alpha Counter, I assume he is talking about a mechanic that was in earlier SF games. Here is the definition.. btw they aren't in SF4 to my knowledge (unless you count the Focus attack?), but they are going to be in SFxTekken.

"When you block your opponent's attack, press the Direction Buttons (Quarter Circle Backwards) in a smooth motion, then press a punch or kick button. This will perform an Alpha Counter attack, which is a quick counter move against your vulnerable opponent. Each character has 2 different Alpha Counters depending which button you press. Alpha Counters consume 1 level on your Super Combo Gauge".[1]

I am not sure what he means by "How can you walk only bu little steps".

I'm pretty sure he means Focus Attacks. It looks like Dudley is doing an Alpha Counter cause he absorbs/blocks the attack then cancels into a special. Focus Attack is both mediums at the same time (can charge it) (that's for whoever was asking about how to "alpha counter").

Also, I'm guess the little steps thing is dashing/back dashing? if so, double tap in either direction.

Sorry, I used the term "Alpha Counter" because there is the little blue "effect" when blocking and the animated Ryu above shows just that.

In the video, it's at 0:21

For the little steps, it's indeed dashing that I meant. So I need only to double-tap.

Thanks for your answers.
