Capcoms best franchise - ONIMUSHA - An appreciation thread

Happy to see this thread back on the front page. I am so pumped to try this series. Watching the game intro's, and just trying to withstand the wait.

I can't be the only one that liked this game...

Oni 2 intro was great but man, I remember my jaw hitting the floor while watching the Oni 3 intro. Still provokes the same reaction! :D <3
Aye, that is true! But woman and children are getting killed in the Oni 2 intro, that's rare as heck in video games! Such brutality makes it so epic, Nobunaga is such a bad ass.

Haha can't argue with that! :p But yeah, Nobunaga is a total badass. I think he's a huge part of why #2 is my favourite.

Damn, if it wasn't Q4 and we all had the time, it would be great to get a group of us to start one (or all!) of the Oni's and play through together :)

Yeah... all these games and shit coming up, takes away our precious time we should be spending with Onimusha :( Oh well, some day!

True :( Once the HD remake/port arrives, we agree to drop whatever we're playing and play it, right? ;)

God, only the thought makes me hyped... Please Capcom! PLEASE.

First three games were so fucking amazing.

Would buy an HD-Sequel in a heartbeat. Quote me if you feel the same. :)
I'd be so blindly loved by Capcom that I'd buy every single game they'd make this generation if they made a HD-sequal of Onimusha. Every game.

Same.

That's right, even Dead Rising (ew).

Onimusha 3's intro is seriously the prettiest gaming intro ever given to us by programmers.

Without question. Absolutely astonishing! No matter how long it's been since the game came out my jaw still drops during the battle with the duel creatures.

Holy shit.

I always found it hilarious how the two pig-creatures moves with motion capture :lol Looks so realistic but yet so odd!

One of my favorite series. I even have the simplistic Onimusha Tactics. I throw it in the DS GBA slot every once in a while specifically to direct characters like Magoichi and Mitsuhide Akechi to beat up on 2D Onimusha enemies. I also have Blade Warriors which is fun to play in quick doses, especially as oddballs like Jujudormah.

Of the mainline games, Genma Onimusha and Onimusha 2 are the ones I consider best. Both can be quite challenging. Genma has has very little fat and is great for quick replay. Onimusha 2 is actually a bit bloated like an RPG, but the primary gameplay takes cues from Genma and provides more variety in characters and even story paths.

I break with some other fans of the series with Onimusha: DoD. I really enjoy that one overall, though the demon realm is indeed a mess. I specifically remember moving on after getting Ohatsu's top gun and being underwhelmed.

And lastly, Onimusha 3 has the distinction of my least favorite intro. Obviously not due to the quality, but because the action and even general style contained within almost looks like an awkward sales pitch for its competitor at the time, Ninja Gaiden. Onimusha has been more about grounded action unless one counts as playing as side...jumpy ninja...characters like Kotaro (who would make sense in the intro...). Even worse was the premium that came from pre-ordering Onimusha 3, a DVD talking only about making the stinkin' intro movie, and only the intro movie...:lol

True, ROBOT did an amazing job.
Also, the PAL SE had a bonus making-of DVD with Donnie Yen ;_;, it was so awesome.

Anyway, too bad I never got around buying the first game, maybe I will.

Quote from the OP!

So you're all wrong! Onimusha 2 intro is better than 3 :D
Uhhhh... no. Onimusha 2's intro is kind of like the intro to some well-done yet cheesy Japanese samurai action flick or something. Onimusha 3's intro looks even better than most HD games can do with their FMV. ROBOT pushed the limits of the PS2 more than any other game did in its entire lifespan.

I think I missed the boat on this one. While I can appreciate that its probably a sweet series, I popped onimusha 1 into my ps2 a few months ago and didn't make it ten minutes through the controls and graphics. Did I have to play it when it came out, or would I enjoy it if i sunk some more time into it?

That is the very bonus DVD I found laughable. Nothing about the game, just how they tried to make an award-winning intro movie. Pfft.

IF anyone is interested I am selling Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny story, Onimusha 3: Demon Siege story, and,Onimusha Blade Warriorsm. PM me if someine wamt one of the games. by the way I wish capcom would make a Onimusha HD for the PS3 and 360.

I played the first one on X-box (Genma Onimusha). It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. And the lack of subs in cutscenes left me in a "WHAT!?" state for the story.

I haven't played the second or third (the third I'm interested in only to shout "OH NO YOU LE DIDN'T!" at my TV), but if they're like the first they're okay games. Not excellent or bad, but they're a passable time waste.

Game has turned out to be everything I'd hoped for and more. Still really early in, but I have a good idea of what to expect now, and I can tell I'm going to love it. The combat is really engaging, and satisfying. The puzzles are a nice change of pace. Upgrading, and customization is one of my obsessions in gaming, so I am loving that aspect. The graphics, and art direction are beautiful. I love the overall style of the game. Another little touch that I like, is the fact that The back story seems really grim, and detailed.

I fear I may have missed some loot, in a couple decoding boxes, unless I can come back later. I am also stuck at the water prison puzzle, because I absolutely suck at these things, and the time limit is fierce.

I will conquer it though, for it is the way of the samurai.

I played the first shortly after it came out and was pretty underwhelmed. It was a good game, but like most PS2 games at that point it just felt disappointing. It was around the same time I played the DMC demo so that might have had something to do with it.

However, I played a friend's copy of the second and adored it. Really liked the RPG elements. I was a poor student at the time and never got my own copy, but I managed to put more time into it than he did.

I did buy the third one and enjoyed the hell out of it. I missed the RPG stuff from the previous game, but the action was a lot of fun. It felt like the game the first one should have been. I really liked the sections where you control Reno's girlfriend too - reminded me a lot of Dino Crisis.

Never played the fourth and no real intention to either. It's a pretty fun series though. I wouldn't say no to a new entry.

Dawn of Dreams was my favorite Onimusha game as well. Spent most of last summer replaying it since there was nothing all that good out on the HD systems.

GREAT WORK!

Damn now this thread was worth creating, thanks a lot bro. Reasons like these are why I like spending times doing them.

Thank YOU.
I found it new in a gamestop too, not shrink wrapped or anything, which was kind of weird.

Finally made it passed the water prison, got my wind element orb, and I am ready for action. ~_~

You found it new? Geez I thought they were rare :O

Grats on the Wind Elemental orb :D! Soon there!

Finished Onimusha warlords today, and I swear I had more fun with it than I did with ninja gaiden. I know gaiden is king as far as game play goes, but I enjoyed the play through more than ng.

Started Onimusha 2 for a quick second, and not only was that intro absolutely amazing, but I have a feeling I'm going to love this game 10x more than warlords.

wooooo

Glad to hear you're enjoying! :) Wait til ya get to #3 though ;)

Games like this are the reason Capcom was so much better last gen than this gen. I miss games like:

Onimusha
God Hand
Viewtiful Joe
Killer 7
P.N 03 (Yes it kicks ass)
Breath of Fire 5
Maximo
Haunting Ground
Clock Tower 3
REmake

Capcom produced some awesome shit last gen. Way better than what they do currently.

Does anybody feel like Capcom lost their "Magic" since the Clover team left?

Gift trading system and inability to get all bracelets in one playthrough aside, Onimusha 2 is probably the best game in the series - the only thing that could improve it would be a more fleshed-out co-op system a la Shin Onimusha and Onimusha 3's R1+X ranged weapon attack (so, so superior to having to unequip a sword in order to equip your ranged weapon). Definitely the best music.

What's everyone's favorite puzzle box system? To remind you:

My favorites are probably the ones from Onimusha 3, personally.

Keep updating us please! It really is a reminder to everyone how great the series (plus the OP of course!)

You will absolutely LOVE Oni 2!

EDIT: And the best puzzles are definitely Dawn of Dreams!!

I'll be interested in seeing comments from anyone playing Onimusha 2. To get the max out of the game you'll need a faq, however, some "gifting paths" can't be reasonably intuited.

I did all 100% myself out of sheer enjoyment of the game...and for Oyu's alternate costume...heh.

Will be revisiting one of these soon, from memory I'm at:
-- Genma, two full Panda-rewarded saves on original Xbox and again on 360
-- Onimusha 2, got a decent amount in on Issen-only mode, but hit a boss roadblock
-- Onimusha 3, did almost everything iirc, usually do a quick play as Heihachi or open the save that has Michelle gameplay
-- DoD. really liked this one, got 2/3 in or maybe more with the one-hit-you-die Oni mode before setting aside, probably won't have a chance in hell if I try again now
-- Tactics, stage numbering in the upper 30s at least
-- Blade Warriors, collected a lot of goodies for various characters, last was probably personal fave Kaede

I do wish that Onimusha 1 and 3 unlocked Ultimate mode via beating Hard difficulty (like Oni 2) instead of via helling minigames. I also wish that 2 and 3 let you start the game over and keep any bracelets/vests you had earned during the previous playthrough.

Wonderful thread. I feel like this series lives in the shadow of RE and DMC, which is a damn shame. This reminds me, I really need to finish 3. :(

If Capcom considers HD Onimusha too expensive to develop (given the decreasing sales of each successive game in the series), I wonder if they'd be in favor of a PSP or Wii Onimusha. I'd play it. (still prefer an HD Onimusha though)

Well guess what lads, it's time to replay Oni 1, I just got the urge to do it!

Anyone with me?

Sure! Don't do that to me with Onimusha 2 though, as much as I love the game I feel compelled to spend about three hours on the gift sidequest and I don't enjoy that whatsoever.

going to use my Ultimate Mode save - god, fuck that pot-smashing minigame

I'd love to, but there's just too much I'm playing at the minute and have arriving for the rest of the month to make time for Oni!
