Capcom's DEEP DOWN was the most impressive thing shown @ PS4 event

This demo definitely got me excited, but it wasn't the only one.

All the PS4 games looked really nice, and I think the jump in graphical quality is fairly large.

I think once we get these next-gen consoles in our hands, it'll be easier to look at current gen stuff and see the difference more clearly. Sort of like looking at Toy Story 1 immediately after watching Wall-E.

Found it!

Absolutely amazing looking fire.

I remember when Framework was announced shown and some scenes from Lost Planet were shown, I was extremely skeptical given the fire/smoke effects, the animation, the overall polished look of it all.
But really this engine seems like an evolution of Framework for sure.

In my self loathing, I was tempted to make a joke about how this could possibly be a new Breath of Fire game. But decided against it.

Looks good, whether a new IP or a Dragon's Dogma 2. Not sure if I will want it yet, going to wait until they show more before any judgement.

Yeah,it was pretty awesome...I was sure this was Dragon's Dogma 2 at first hehe...can't wait to see more hopefully at E3.

Really? Less than a handful of games in the genre and its in danger of being run into the ground?

It seems like every single game on Vita that anyone is looking forward to is a monster-hunter archetype and there are tons of them. Consoles don't have as many but at the current rate I'd say it's due to burn itself out. Dragon's Dogma sequel then a game that looks (and I do mean looks, as in art style) like Dragon's Dogma is gonna be their first next-gen game? Dark Souls II on the way and I'm sure a sequel planned for next-gen afterwards (if the game itself isn't going to be next-gen). I feel like I've gotta be missing some more games but if I'm not I guess that was a bit overstated, but I still feel like it's a growing fad and is not necessarily going to last very long.

People don't seem to understand that with the amount of fillrate that you have on this system you can definitely pull off realistic looking fire and various particle heavy effects.

Combine that with Compute units for accurate physics simulations and you can create extremely believable effects like the fire seen here.

If you look at the slide that they show of the engine before they start the demo you can see that particle effects seem to be a big focus for them. This is definitely real-time footage.

The most impressive thing for me as far as the software shown was Sleeping Dogs. This Capcom demo didn't do anything for me although I have to admit it looks great.

It would not shock me if that were realtime.

Capcom's cutscene work using MT Framework even on PS3 and 360 has been absolutely mind meltingly good. For as much hatred that RE6 has received, its cutscenes, at times, look so good that you'd think they were pre-rendered. I mean, if they can achieve the following in realtime on older consoles it's not difficult to believe they could take it much further with a new platform. MT Framerwork also ran effortlessly on modern PCs suggesting there is a LOT of room to grow.

I assume this is as real as Square-Enix's Luminous tech demo.

Scripted, real time.

In this case, the intention was to script an intended scene for gameplay; while Luminous tech demo was intended to script a cutscene.

The biggest limiting factor to scripted to gameplay is that gameplay has to prioritize responsiveness over animation transition.

So the subtle movements and motions of characters, especially as they turn and side step and what not will be more difficult to get visually perfect, due purely to pragmatic (rather than technical) reasons.

Ok I'll say this. The demo was mind blowing from a graphical perspective. If that's actually in game then graphics are a huge leap, not just a small one that some people have been trolling about. Next gen graphics are more then good enough and animations and physics will only improve.

The art direction though I disliked. It looks like a dungeon and dragons pc type game that only the hardcore are interested in. Capcom has such amazing character. I hope they add some cool ones here. This isn't the 90s

You guys are funny. This was realtime. It had glitches consistent to what would appear for realtime graphics. Maybe it was running on PC because they didn't say otherwise, but it was realtime nonetheless.

Knack and this probably looked most 'next gen' of all the footage they've shown.

well capcom did make the D&D arcade games

Surely you guys know that wasnt in-game. Right? It was a tech demo. Purely a tech demo.
I don't think this distinction means as much anymore. The PS4 has tons of horsepower and memory. To put in things like AI, UI elements, combat code, and whatever, isn't going to eat up a ton of space. If Capcom is willing to devote the money and resources it'd take, the final game will look as good, if not better, than their scripted demo. The only thing that makes it prohibitive is the increased cost of development.

Oh good lord it's Killzone 2 all over again. Except the Killzone demo was actually real this time.

One of the things that impresses the most in the video and makes it so convincing that you might not notice in a direct way is the animations. You will not see animations like that in any game on any platform in the next 10 years. Just not going to happen. If you rewatch the real killzone video from the conference you will notice how gamelike the animations are. They even discreetly look into the distance twice to draw your attention away from the awkward way the soldier in front of the player is walking down the stairs. Now go back and watch the Killzone 2 trailer again. They still haven't matched the animations in that fake cgi trailer.

And the specs inside of the PS4 are just not enough for lighting of that precision. It's doubtful, but perhaps, just maybe, it may happen, that 1 or 2 non-racing/fighting games may come somewhat close to that type of lighting in a real gameplay environment.

per ono, this was a real time demo, running on ps4 hardware as an example of what his team could do. it's not a target render, and it's not running on a PC.

there were plenty of similar real time demos made for the ps2 when it launched. every single one was exceeded within a few years of launch.

This looks awesome, by far my favourite game of the event, but that dragon is just too ridiculous. Why does it have those floppy ears and a dick growing out of its nose?

Third cross post.

I'm not confident that the Deep Down trailer represents playable, animated gameplay, but I have no doubt it's real time in-engine footage either running directly from the PS4 hardware or at the very least PC.

Frame analysing the footage, you can spot the following (I can't believe I'm doing this):

0:26 - Weird DOF at seam as the camera comes into focus of the flame.
0:31 - Fabric tears and stitching on bald guy's cloak are textured on.
0:35 - Pretty typical bloom/glow emanating from the dude's face, simulating illumination from fire. Can also see a seam where the hair* poly is modelled onto the head.
0:42 - Show resolution flickers on the rocks to the left as the torch passes around.
0:43 - Pixellated DOF edge.
0:48 - Standard SSAO/HDAO.
0:52 - What looks like shadow flickering or even z-fighting on the pillars.
1:12 - Sharp pixels when shiny edges are introduced to per object motion blur (you sometimes see this in Crysis 2).
1:18 - Relatively muddy ground texture.
1:22 - Small, physics generated debris 'floating', not colliding with the ground properly.
*and to note that, there's no detailed hair strands/simulation (eyelashes, facial hair, head heair) anywhere in the demo.

Again, not sure about those animations being actual gameplay. And some aspects could be fake with pre-canned, heavily scripted animations (eg: fire). But it looks both fucking incredible and a real time engine demonstration. Flaws are not really negatives, so much as evidence of the reality of real times graphics processing. It's why Ubisoft's bullshot screenshots always have a weird, uncanny look, even though most are using in-game assets. The rendering is always oversampled and touched up, so it's not technically real time anything.

This, on the other hand, looks bona fide real time.

I agree.

I just watched the 1080p version and the majority of people claiming CG must have just seen the GIF or something. Its clearly in engine at normal resolutions.

It is not the visuals at all that are unachievable, it is the way the combat is presented...far too fluid. Otherwise, I dont see how the demo was more impressive than other stuff shown. Infamous for instance impressed me as much from a purely visual perspective

This with dark souls difficulty would be awsome.

At least here you can block the fire attacks with a shield unlike in DS where you are overcome eventually. Dame that Kite Dragon, worse than Kalameet

Come on Salsa you are smarter than that. This wasn't Killzone 2 CGI from 2005. I can see it very doable on PCs and on PS4 for that matter. Capcom's games last gen (Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Dragon's Dogma) were crazy good looking when being announced.

it wasnt gameplay either. There was not one sight of a preset animation. Every single thing was scripted.

in-engine footage? maybe

touched up? probably

actual gameplay where you were controlling the character? nope. Im skeptical

it's not like they havent tricked us before, add that to the fact that this looked a LOT better than anything else shown (supposedly also running) and yeah, I need more proof.

that HUD was most definetly thrown in there to trick peeps, that much im sure of.

Regarding the demands on processing power, there is a world of difference between a scripted cutscene and actual dynamic gameplay, regardless of the cutscene being presented in real-time.

I'm sure we'll get an equivalent experience a few years down the road. I don't believe Capcom actually displayed a game with Deep Down.

I wonder if "Deep Down" is literal... I mean maybe this is more like Diablo + Dark Souls.

Like, it's pure dungeon crawler where you work your way down into the depths and it gets increasingly difficult, but better loot, etc...

I'm in agreement this was nothing more than a tech demo, I'm still looking forward to the whatever it becomes (DD2) though.

I'm treating it as a tech demo.

If it was CG, that would be disappointing (because the imperfections pointed out by EatChildren earlier would show deceptive intent on Capcom's side).

But that's the fun of a dev showing off new tech, new engines. You get to challenge what you think was possible and the discussion about what was real and what was smoke and mirrors is fun to have.

I've ended up on the wrong side of this discussion in the past, but I'm treating this as a tech demo, which makes the lighting and fire shown very impressive to me.

I couldn't name a Capcom game I like.
GAF is getting more ridiculous with every new batch of members.

To everyone saying that's a UI pasted I don't think that's what it is. I could be wrong, but it seems more like its a HUD to switch the camera to each of the characters. If this were cut between an in-engine demo I would expect there to be something like that to show it off in real time.

When I saw the Killzone and Motorstorm demo I knew right away that those were bullshit-No way we were getting a console game that looked like that in real time back in 2005. This time I'm a little more optimistic. Here's hoping anyway.

This is Killzone 2 CG happening all over again.
Hopefully not.

Let's hope the solid generational gulf between something like Deep Down and something like Knack being shown at the same hardware event was due to scope, budget and one being a tech demo vs the other being a game in its alpha stages.

And not due to CG "target renders" vs an actual game.

That said, Killzone 2 CG target render looking absolutely unbelievable in 2005 had turned into an "it looks very good" in 2009. So Deep Down looking incredible in 2013 might turn into a more measured response when games on that engine actually release in 2016/17. Tech moves fast.
