It's easy for Picard to look classy and great when he has this super advanced ship, near unlimited resources and the backing of the strongest government in the Galaxy behind him.

Adama had sweet fuck all to work with and still saved his species.

Look at what Mal had to work with: a beat up transport, a crew made up of criminals, rejects and a consort. And he only had 14 episodes and 1 movie in order to do what he did. Imagine if he had proper military training like Picard or Adama, and a couple of seasons on TV.
