Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (PS3/360) Comparison Thread

Got my amazon.com opened up and ready to order for this shit. What god tier games have I apparently missed!?

I prefer the art direction and overall atmosphere in LOS more than GOW3 and that's why I may say that I like the look of LOS more, but I don't think LOS is as technically brilliant as GOW3, not in any way.

I don't think there are any PS3 games that beat Uncharted 2 overall, I'm just curious as to what games he thinks look better.

MGS4

sorry

you goddamn well better be! :lol

MGS4 looks fucking terrible, even when it came out. I was embarrassed for Kojima just playing it. But I know you're not serious ;)

Metro is definitely superior in many ways, but again, different scope. Crysis is way bigger scale

Definitely. Game still looks incredible 3 years out, especially after the island freezes over.

I see no mention of Castlevania in this thread.

carry on!

First it was the famerate madness, now overall graphics discussion. This is the way of GAF.

only about 8-9 hours in now but still loving this game. the light and dark magic system is incredibly fun to switch between while in combat and keeps things interesting. graphics, music, and atmosphere are still the best i've seen this generation. experienced a few occasional framerate dips here and there but nothing to hinder the playablity or enjoyment of the game.

overall, so glad i got this.

I love achievements but don't know what my gamer score is, anything that adds re-playability to a game for me is a plus, its always fun for me and my friends to play a game again and try and grab some achievements.

Personally I don't mind the graphics in MGS4, but this is not the time and place for that :lol

But seriously, even though Heavenly Sword was kind of shit (at least the demo was awful, never played the full game), the graphics were pretty good.

So basically there is no actual difference between the two systems aside from the controller itself?

PS3 framerate has been reported by numerous outlets to be more stable than the 360 version.

One thing I've never understood about "Not Sure If Serious?" Gifs is the fact that almost every Gif I've seen of this "meme" or whatever, none of them have the Question mark at the end of the sentence. Why is that?

Isn't the person asking a question with bad grammar?

It's asking "I'm not sure if you are serious?" or "Not sure if serious?"

I mean bad grammar or not; How lazy you have to be to not include the "?" at the end?

The whole thing is a question being asked isn't it? Without it it just doesn't work, not to me it doesn't.

Anyway sorry for being so random and off topic, just wondering that's all.
The original root meme was "Do not want" which came from Darth Vader's "Noooo!" at the end of a badly subtitled Chinese pirate version of Star Wars Episode 3.

It gave birth to (among others) "Do want" and "Not sure if want..."

"Not sure if want..." gave birth to "Not sure if serious..." with an image of the Joker from Batman The Dark Knight.

The artistic comparisons to GOW are just ridiculous. If the GOW team wanted to dump out a 25 FPS game I'm sure they could have dramatically increased the eye candy accordingly with all those spare milliseconds. This game isn't even in the same league.

So I decided on the PS3 version.

My XBOX game shelf is pretty full, and my PS3 shelf is only half full. It's an OCD thing.

I think this should be everyones criteria.

god please inform me of which ones so I can buy them IMMEDIATELY

Keep in mind that i'm not highlighting the technical aspects of these games when i talk about their presentation. I'm not a tech head and staring at brick textures and foliage shading is as interesting to me as watching grass grow. I just call it as i see it.

That said, the following games impressed me more than UC2:

Flower
Wipeout HD Fury
Killzone 2 (game is bleh though)
God of War 3
CV Lords of Shadow
Dead Space
Final Fantasy XIII (some dodgy designs and S-E fucked up big time where it counts, but it is pretty from what i've seen)
...hmm i know i'm forgetting something.

Dont get me wrong though, UC2 looks good, i just dont find it as drop dead gorgeous as most people.

edit:

Oh, everybody's going on-topic now?

Shit, have mercy on me mods :lol

It's simpler than that, there's just no question being asked. It's like saying "I'm not sure if he was wearing blue pants or black pants...", "I'm not sure if he is serious or not...", etc.

Man I'm so fucking pumped to play this. Tomorrow can't come fast enough!!! Let's go GAF, let's go!

In honor of all that is great, I'm going to watching Bram Stoker's Dracula and a) revel at how awesome Gary Oldman is, b) Applaud Tom Waits stellar performance, c) marvel at Eiko Ishiokas' costume design, and c) smile at the fact that my wife bears a striking resemblance to Winona.

There are far prettier (and overall better) PS3 games out there as far as i'm concerned. And that unlikable, smug faced-asshole of a protagonist can go die in a fire :lol

Why ND, why?

You find Nathan Drake unlikable? He's like, one of the most likable protagonists out there. Or are you one of those gaffers that just hates good looking guys?

Huh?

90% of popular game protagonists are "good looking", i'd be screwed if that was the case :lol

I was watching Bram Stoker's Dracula just a few weeks ago. It's aged really well. Such an awesome movie.

Yeah, but 90% of game protagonists don't look like regular but good looking dudes that you see walking down the street.

Post processing and textures are superior to me. I just booted both games up a few days ago to test out my new cpu and Metro 2033 just looks so damn good.
Post processing is better, but the environments are tiny in comparison to Crysis so it's no surprise that textures are a bit higher resolution.

Yea it has, seriously.

Just to let folks know it's on Netflix Instant. A GAF collective viewing tonight. Come on, it HAS to happen!

SO fucking good, I love it.

Well I think the fact that you think FFXIII looks better than UC2 says all that needs to be said about the difference in our taste. Technically, it's infinitely inferior. And artistically? LOLOLOLOOLOLOL

All the others on that list are clearly technically inferior to UC2, and then it's just about what you think of the art style.

Yeah, I don't get that. Anyone who doesn't see the Tech Achievements in U2 are just kidding themselves. The level of detail is just unreal. I will say that Flower was pretty amazing considering its a $10 PSN title.

I definitely think God of War has a way better art direction and looks waaaay better to boot, but even if it didn't, it most certainly has the better combat system. Castlevania's was terrible in the demo - low tier (Bayonetta -> Devil May Cry 1/3 -> Ninja Gaiden -> God of War ->>>>>>>>>>>>> Castlevania) Even though it supposedly opens up, I doubt they could resuscitate it even to the low standards GoW sets.

For me, God of War is a great looking console game technically speaking. I think it could easily be argued that it, Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 are the top console games in terms of technical merits when looking at graphics. In terms of art direction it doesn't stand out as anything particularly amazing to me.To me it just shoots for realism versus a stylized approach which I find to be much tougher to pull of from an art direction standpoint.

I can't speak for Castlevania LOS as I haven't played the entire game yet, I've only played the demo, but from what I've seen in the videos the art direction looks nice from a color/environment standpoint though again a lot of it seems to be shooting for a more realistic style.

In addition, while I love GoW's combat system, I want to give Castlevania a full playthrough before I make any actual comparisons.

Wow the bitching over the framerate is more severe than I would have expected based on the demo. I think I need to replay it. The framerate was 10 times worse in the Enslaved demo.

His list has some ridiculous choices like Dead Space, but U2-superiority aside Flower is incredibly pretty and Wipeout HD is just amazing looking with its 1080p@60fps goodness

Yeah, I love Dead Space and all, but it isn't up there with this gens great Graphical Showcases. Now sound design, thats a different story! That being said, the Dead Space 2 MP Beta looks fantastic and runs butter smooth!

Oh I definitely think Wipeout looks nice. Best looking game on either downloadable service (XBLA/PSN), imo.

Technically, Flower is pretty unimpressive and the game itself was fucking awful, so I have no particular affinity for it. But artistically, it wasn't bad. I prefer the look of JOURNEY myself though.

You're not forgetting the lulz.

On topic:

24 FPS is worrisome.

fwiw, I think UC2 is far and away the best looking game I have ever played. a lot of that has to do with how well optimised everything is, most of the other games that even look comparable to it have some glaring wart (frame-rate, screen-tearing, resolution etc) that rears its head every now and again.

Personally, I never really liked the look of God III. Very plain colours and blocky geometry.

Alright, finally played the demo on 360 and can report back.

Framerate is definitely worse than the PS3 version, which is very rare these days. Even the book doesn't run at a proper 60 fps like it does on PS3, oddly enough. What I suspect is going on here is that the PS3 version runs with triple buffering while the 360 version does not. So, when the 360 version cannot hold, say, 30 fps it drops all the way to 20 fps (and so on). As a result, there seems to be much more variation in framerate with drops hitting much harder.

I'm surprised the difference is this pronounced. I hope the final 360 version runs smoother as this is pretty bad. It was not perfect on PS3 by any means, but it felt much smoother overall.

The actual visual quality, though, appears to be identical. Same resolution, same effects, same everything. Neither version sports AA either, it seems.

Personally I think FF XIII looks much better then UC 2, but then it has a few glaring flaws that I don't remember UC2 having, namely some of the ground textures looked god awful in battle.

But then I think most of it was beautiful and I am a fan of Nomura's style so I loved the look of the characters compared to the more realistic style used in UC2.

That said I can't think of many games that come close to it on console that go for the realistic look.

Textures in XIII were always terrible outside of urban areas.

MercurySteam should patch in some goddamn MLAA. People are all about framerate up in this bitch, but for me 720p without AA of any sort is borderline unacceptable.

Technically, Uncharted 2 fucking molests FFXIII. It's almost comically far apart. Artistically, well, as you say, you're a fan of Nomura's style - I'm not a fan of his grotesque style or his janky, disjointed and disconnected world that felt like total shit. But that's just personal preference vs. personal preference. The only objective thing we have is the technical merits, for which Uncharted 2 shits on FFXIII from a great height.

But, anyway, Castlevania Lords of Shadow is also technically superior to FFXIII, I'd say.

Regarding FFXIII. I'd say the models of FFXIII look inferior as compared to UC2's (Lightning's hair looks like shit). In terms of environment, I'd say they both look good (UC2 is a bit better), although UC2's was definitely explorable. I'd give the upper hand to UC2 definitely.

My problem with FFXIII's visuals were that nothing really blended on a micro-level (characters on a field, plants on the ground, etc) or from a more wide-lensed perspective (chapter one versus chapter 5, to name two random examples).

Everything felt really sterile, like a series of blocks put together. The way the characters interacted with the environment was very 'PS2-era'. Everything felt totally, uh... weightless (maybe not the word I want to use here, I can't think of a better one at the momenty), as a result. It looked mostly pretty nice, but there was no signature look or visual motif that really defined it.

The notable exception to the above is, you guessed it, Chapter 11.

People need to really evaluate the differences side by side. Honestly, Uncharted 2 is doing so many effects simultaneously that FFXIII simply doesn't even attempt - it truly is a league of its own. Shit, it does effects that 99.9% of all games PC included don't even do.

God where is this Castlevania DigitalFoundry comparison...
