Cave Story for WiiWare: (Finally) The Official Thread

Haha! I finished the game with a good laugh. Obviously I'll try again right now.

As soon as Kazuma asked me to escape, I said "yeah let's get the fuck out of here" without a second thought. It actually took me a few moments to realize I just got BAD END'd. :lol
This might be a good opportunity to go back and put some Jellyfish Juice in King's House, which I stupidly forgot to do before. I did get the Jellyfish Juice and everything.

My health is 41 by the way, hopefully will go up with whatever's behind King's house. I may or may not want to know what's the max health possible.

Man this game is stunning, I never even knew about this until it hit the Giantbomb quicklook, I'm now playing through the PSP homebrew version, only a few hours in so far but god dam it's brilliant, a dam shame there isn't a version that I can pay for on the PSP as the creator seriously deserves every penny he can get for this game.

Beat it two days ago and got the normal ending. I forgot how evil that bastard Doctor is!

There's really a lot to this game that can't be experienced in just one playthrough. I noticed that my sister was humming some of the game's music while I was playing. :D

Gonna start a second file after I finish up playing Red Steel 2 again.

So I bought this thinking I was about to experience the best freeware game ever, but I was mislead. This is actually one of the finest platforming games I've ever played, freeware or not. If this game was released back on the SNES days it would be considered a classic, timeless masterpiece, ranking among the best games on the system.

Makes me wonder what Pixel is doing lately. Is he working on a new game or something?

Also, I'm playing with the new music and I didn't notice any problems with it.

How is La Mulana, by the way? Now that I played Cave Story I'm curious about that game too.

He's mentioned that he's working on a RPG. I don't think there are any details though.

Except for the fact that the original soundtrack is four thousand times better. I'd suggest the PC or PSP versions since they both get it right. The original music is pretty terrible on the Wii due to the worst audio compression I've heard in years (and I'm usually not the type to flip out about that sort of thing).

I decided to try out the freeware version on PC before committing to the Wiiware version. So far it's a really fun and tight experience. The bosses are really easy though.

Does anyone know if the issues involving music in Wiiware Cave Story are going to fixed? I know they patch some games, like Bit.Trip Beat for difficulty.

Edit:

I just saw your Ponyo version of I'm on a Boat and it was really well done! Especially how there was footage that matched that many lines in the song.

I've heard that they're considering a patch but nothing definite.

The thing is, it's going to take a hell of a patch. I don't understand why they went for shitty compressed mp3s (or whatever) instead of emulating the PC version's soundbank. It certainly isn't a processing power issue and it would have cut down on the file size by a LOT. Maybe the devs just can't handle it? It's not like they didn't have 92839726 years to port the game...

Okay, finally got my Wii back online. Goddamn university wireless.
Downloaded it, been playing it and....wow, new music is crap. Every new area I give the new stuff a chance, and switch back after about thirty seconds. Its just to...busy, you can barely hear the tune under the cacophony.
Loving playing it with a classic controller though.

Well, I don't have any issues with the music. Old or new.

The new graphics and controls are more important to me, so I'm quite happy with the Wiiware version. :)

I finished it the other day. I'll just put the whole thing in spoilers to avoid any problems.

The end boss rush (I didn't get Ballos) was a bit too hard for me. Granted, I SUCK at bosses until I gather a strategy/know them better, so maybe it's just me, but the final 4 bosses really hurt my experience of the ending.

Because the first time, I don't really play the game for the challenge, and even though I appreciate the fact it's not super easy, at some point I just want to see the ending because I really cared for the story in the game. I remember how I saw Misery freaking out and Sue getting possessed and I was like "eh, whatever" because I was tired from the Doctor fight, and that's a shame.

That said, I'll be playing the game for the challenge from now on. I got really good with the final 4 bosses now and I'll be playing the game again to get to Hell.

I looked up a tiny touch of the things I missed, and I decided I'll be looking most of them up. I love how insanely obscure the secrets are, but I won't be breaking my head trying to find them.

the interview with Pixel on the nintendo channel is pretty cool. (except when it's buffering every 5 seconds)

also i'm still not seeing the high praise for this game.

This has been on my radar for a while, heard good things. A few questions tho: how long is it? Anything it is similar to? I can't form a picture for how it plays. I am sure these points have been covered, I just don't have time to read the previous 9 pages! Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.

I wouldn't say it's very long. I guess 6 to 8 hours on your first playthrough if you don't go for the best ending.

Anything similar to? Hmm, that's a hard one. The game is very unique, but it borrows some elements from Metroid and Megaman. If you like both games chances are you will like Cave Story. Actually, if you are a gamer, chances are you will like Cave Story because the game is awesome.

The gameplay is spot on. Everything just feels right. The jumping, the shooting, the platforming. The story and it's characters are really charming too.

Is there any way to get the OST for the Wii ware version ? The remixed main theme is one of the best things ever.

Agreed.

There's really nothing I don't like about Cave Story. The graphics and music are great (even the original versions), the characters are memorable, the story has its share of funny, happy and sad moments, the controls work perfectly, the level design is well made, and the gameplay is solid and challenging without being frusterating or cheap.

I suppose the only negative thing I can saw is that some of the mission tasks (including optional ones) could have been better explained or hinted at in some cases. Then again, the game doesn't try to hold your hand so it encourages the player to explore the environments and talk to the npc characters.

Just finished my first playthrough. I'm going to do a couple more to
get the other optional weapons
. I'm going to miss the Machine Gun.

My favorite thing about the game was it was Metroid-lite. Each level offered exploration but was also (for the most part) self-contained so it cuts down on backtracking and getting lost.

I read some bad things about the music in the WiiWare version. Has this been fixed yet? Also, does anyone know when this comes out in Europe?

Really? I never once wondered what I was supposed to do, and I'm really thick-headed and take a long time to figure these kinda things. It might be prior experience from similar games subconsciously, I guess.

The one thing I hate about the game is the forced cutscenes. The first time, the story is really really good (I seriously love it, which is unusual for me), but Cave Story is a challenging action platformer, and I wanna play it like that too, but it's more annoying because I can't skip cutscenes every time I die or if I wanna speedrun the game. I can't imagine someone doing a 3-heart run and dying over, and over, and over again, and every single time, he has to go through a lot of dialogue just to re-attempt a boss.

Ah, yes the unskippable cut scenes! You're right about that.

I suppose it wasn't the actual mission tasks that I had a problem with. I did have a problem with some of the optional stuff that the game never really made clear if I remember correctly. For example, the fact that you can get certain weapons and items but doing so won't let you obtain certain other weapons later on.

Ok so I got late to the party, beat the game last night. My god the game is incredible! It starts out a little bit slow, but then it really ramps up. Has a few meh parts
arming the bomb and finding the puppies
but apart from that the game is brilliant!

Controls work like a charm, original music is catchy has hell, great level design, awesome graphics and characters. It really became one of my favourite best games ever.

Got the normal ending, so probably I'll start replaying it again tommorow. I really amazes me this game was created by just one guy.

Oh, and favourite character by far is Misery.

I started playing Curly Brace mode yesterday and almost finished with the grassland section. So far, it doesn't look there there's any difference between this and the original story mode with Quote.

Just turned off the game after dying against what I assume is the last boss (
Red Crystal Core/Misery/Curly
). I hate having to restart from the beginning if I mess up against one form.

Game is phenomenal apart from that. Gave it a try years ago on PC but stopped playing right at the beginning (never left Mimiga village actually). On WiiWare I was hooked :D

So that's what you assume ;).
Watch the credits carefully :D .

Just wanted to say that when you're done playing Cave Story, download An Untitled Story and play through that. It's a kinda similar indie game for PC.

Just started Cave Story on Wii. It's sooooo damn awesome. I love the level-up/level-down system. It's a fresh twist.

This is a damn good game.

I'm on play #3.

At the secret level, holy shit.

Made it to the third (assumed last) boss on my third try so i guess I'll tackle it next time.

Good grief its been about a month and I'm still on the last stage of the true ending. Those falling blocks are ridiculous. :/

And why no save points? That pixel guy is a jerk. :lol

That's the hardest part (sort of).

After that it's just an endurance run as far as I can tell.

damn the game is addicting.
just played 4hrs straight. 1 thing i hate is the jump system. reminds me of the floaty jump of Littlebig planet

Bought this a couple weeks ago and it didn't click when I first played it. Picked it up again last weekend and WOW this game is good. :D Looks and sounds so good.

I don't think there's a problem with the audio itself, the problem is that the SFX sound is too aloud, and ringing bells sound the most. But there's not compresion problem.

By the way I finished it, can't remember the last game I enjoyed so much playing, I think it was Phoenix Wright some time ago =P

Could give a second playthrough with
Curly

So there IS a European version? When is it coming out? Is it wrong that this is my second most awaited game after Metroid: Another M?
No, this game is that awesome, but that's wrong call that way to Metroid: Other M =P

I noticed this as well. Especially when you turn the music to be classic style because it seems to be quieter than the default remixed audio. The "ding ding" sound of power triangle things bouncing on the ground pierced my ears like you wouldn't believe.

Thank goodness there are volume levels. It took a little tweaking but I eventually turned the SFX volume down to where it was level with the music.

I JUST found out about this game while looking at game rankings on metacritic. So I've been playing it and am blown away! What a fantastic game that I can't seem to put down.

What are some other games out there that are very resemblant to this quality of game?

There are 3 endings dude. Be sure to check that out.

Also, La Mulana should be coming soon for Wiiware.
Oh really? How do I find out how to get the other endings without finding spoilers? I got the ending where
the game just suddenly ended when I met the professor and we flew away on the drake and everyone died? We lived in a cave alone. Sorta depressing ending :lol

:lol You just have to say you want to stay and help the guys (basically not being a dick) and the game goes on. You're missing like 50% :lol

I will never get the true ending. ;_; I'm not hardcore enough. :lol
I will someday! I haven't given in and watched it online. I really want to do it.

That's the worst possible ending. When he asks you to escape with him, decline and keep going. That way, you'll at least get the regular ending.

The requirements for the best ending are a little obscure, but keep your eyes peeled and you'll be able to catch them. The game actually does kind of spell them out, but not until after you can't change the ending (if you've messed it up), so you'll have to play through multiple times if you want to figure it out.

Yeah, that is essentially the "bad" ending. There is another good chunk of the game to go. Then after beating the game once, you are going to want to go back through to get the actual ending (assuming you didn't do all the little things you need to do to get it). I'd recommend that you use a guide, because it can be frustrating if you don't.
