Cave Story for WiiWare: (Finally) The Official Thread

Yeah, as a base. As in, a reference used by the artist (AKA, Pixel, who made the new graphics) so that they have the basic shape and resolution of the finished sprite to work with.

On the left is the hand-upscaled and interpolated reference.
On the right is the finished sprite.

If you are really saying that it's just a filtered sprite with minor touch-ups, then you're crazy.
Those are scaled and then touched-up, not sure what you're missing on it. The picture is right there.

I'm not arguing how good they look.

The new graphics are simply filter upscaled with minor hand touchups. They look rather lackluster and empty for their resolution, lacking the detail packed into the smaller sized version.

Touch-up does not mean "re-drawn using a reference." Artists use references and techniques like that all the time, it does not mean "touch-up."

Princess Skittles said:
If you truly believe they were redrawn from scratch, good on you.

There's nothing more I care to say on it.

Yep, that picture is the very definition of "touch-up" and that's why it looks weird. The art was meant to look pixelated. Now, it looks half pixelated and half drawn over top.

you knock down that straw bastard, show him what-for

Or it looks like a higher-detail version of the old sprite and still looks great since it was drawn by the same pixel artist in the same style and everything.

He must be a genius too, because he was able to completely mirror the interpolating and upscaling effect on 75% of the sprite...some like the left hand and both feet and ear almost pixel by pixel. How did he do that? He's amazing.

Pixel had a lot of shit to do to get this thing done. He used his computer to elevate many of his duties and to help with continuity issues. Not complicated.

but alas I'm done talking to a wall. A blind wall.

Wow you cracked the code, a pixel artist used a computer to aid in creating a more detailed version of a sprite, just like I've been saying this whole time.

BUT OH ALAS MAYHAPS I AM TOO INNE DENIALE TO ACCEPTE YOUR TRUTH GOOD SIR

redrawn is redrawn, whether from scratch or not. this argument is stupid.

I'm not even sure what the argument is about anymore. Someone said that it was just filtered with "minor touch-ups" and that it looked empty and undetailed, and I showed that that wasn't true at all. Then it suddenly went off on some bizarre tangent about how it doesn't count unless it's from scratch and apparently saying that it's more than a touchup means I think it was drawn by brush on a a rice paper scroll or something.

redrawn is redrawn, whether from scratch or not. it's clearly obvious that there is a lot of detail on the sprites that goes well above and beyond simple scaling/filtering. this argument is stupid.

It's (slightly) relevant in that the graphics don't look as good as they could have at that resolution because of the scaling/touchup method.

Just because they were scaled and touched up by our Lord and Savior, Pixel, doesn't make them awesome.

So you want to port a game and add higher-resolution sprites.

What exactly do you do? First you upscale the sprite to fit the target resolution. Then you smooth out the edges with interpolation to get a better idea of the level of detain you can have. Then you redraw the details to fit the new resolution.

Bingo bango bongo. I'm not sure what else you wanted detail wise that wouldn't conflict with the art-style or make the game look totally different, something that way too many "high resolution" remakes of games do by adding far too much detail and color.

Yes. Blaster Master Overdrive's new main character design says hi. Cave Story hosting a whole new litany of details and effects would crush the game's original charm. Obviously the redrawn sprites aren't up to the likes of Wario Land Shake It or something, but it keeps the game looking simple without turning off people that weren't fans of the original game. I think a lot of players that never experienced the original Cave Story probably wouldn't be sold seeing this game in the shop with the old, pixelated graphics. So it's part marketing and part giving Pixel a chance to revise his style.

I must be the only one here who went straight to hard mode.

Incidentally, I just found out that you CAN get the life capsule Jenka's dog gives you right before last cave, giving you a maximum of 8 HP rather than 3. That is, if my memory isn't failing me and there aren't any other "given" life capsules that I missed. I don't remember if the extra would make a difference the rest of the game.

Last cave + final boss
+ Sacred Grounds
to go, and I'm debating whether to actually keep the extra 5 HP or not :lol

here is where I entirely disagree with you. By definition, the fact that he touched them at all, let alone as unarguably extensively as he did, means that they are as he wants them to be. Now if you like his redone graphics or not is an entirely different point in the argument. but they were redrawn, despite how much of that redrawing was done algorithmically and how much by hand. It can't be argued that he touched seemingly every single sprite. So they all left his hand (at some point or other) with him satisfied with it. Arguing that they don't look as good as they could of had he employed no filtering is moot as he clearly touched most or all sprites by hand after the filtering, in some cases extensively. the result is certainly purely subjective, but the method to get there is entirely irrelevant.

Well, it WAS the only thing released this week. :lol

But yeah, the game is so much fun, I beat it last night and want to start a new game already.

Well it's not like every new game released gets on top either, last year we had the same top 5 games just swapping places for like 3 months, so I don't see what you mean by that.
Plenty of games also sold better in their second week than at release.

I've been busy all week and I finally got a chance to sit down with it and I'm so impressed by this game. I'm kicking myself for not playing it sooner but since I've corrected my mistake no harm done. I'm gonna do my best to get my people to experience Cave Story because it's a must play game just for the fact that you can say you have.

So, why are we assuming there will be a patch to fix the music? Did they say something about that?

It would be pretty easy to fix. Just upload a new version to the store.

games have been patched on v.c. for far sillier, inane reasons. i have hopes for a cave story sound fix.

Sad to see such a great thread of a great game bogged down with such stupid arguments.

I never played Cave Story before, so when I started playing the other day, I literally thought: "totally lives up to the hype"

The new sprites look great.

Perfect example of staying true yet improving on the original art.
I'm looking at you, SSFIIHD.

I'm sad to admit that I've never touched Cave Story until tonight (PC with english patch). I love it so far, but am wondering if this is planned for either XBLA or PSN before dipping into the WiiWare version. Any news, or is this a Nintendo exclusive? Thanks!

Argh the charm is overleaking from the game into my eyes.

How can a game be so lovable after I played it for an hour and a half. And my head is already going crazy with possible plot scenarios. I feel like I found another Earthbound.

btw one guy made this

Yeah that's the best part about it. I don't care what anyone says (and people do say this) about how "it doesn't matter how many people made it or how long it took", it's fucking amazing. It fills you with inspiration.

This is my second indie game that I am so attracted to, and I am actually leaning towards thinking Cave Story is better than An Untitled Story.
Funny, they're both exploration games and they both have "story" in their name.

Yeah, exactly. People complaining about minuscule details like what they changed "Huzzah" to really need to get a grip. Talk about not being able to see the forest for the trees. :p

I'm all for giving the game honest criticism (yes, even though it was made by one guy), but the new sprites are not something to be negative about.

I played through the game four times over the course of two weeks when the translation patch came out.

It's rare for a game designer to just nail it in all respects, but when it happens, the results are tremendous.

Love this game~

I'm sure I'm not going to get the best ending, but I have no problem with the idea of playing the hell out of this title until I do!

I beat the game for the first time today. I've gotten two different endings so far. Wondering if there are any others.

I nearly cried when I had to leave Curly in the core room. How did I grow so attached to her?! Is there any way to save her?

There's one third final ending, and it's connected to the question in your spoiler.

Yes, you can save Curly. Try exploring the core room BEFORE you talk to Curly and start the boss fight.

There's actually a bit more work you need to do after that, but it'll start you on the right path.

Are people really complaining about the Kool-Aid reference? Oh c'mon.

Isn't that only available if
you don't get the booster 0.8 from the prof?

I made it to the end of the game yesterday. Fighting
Misery and the Doctor back to back
is going to be rough. I wish I hadn't wasted my life refill item thingy fighting the tank...

I'm kinda shocked at how easily
Toroko, King and the professor died. Poof! Carry on playing.

But I like how I see King's spirit in the sword at level 3, that's an awesome touch. I just wish I didn't switch my gun for the stupid machine gun which is slower, weaker, and has temporary limited ammo.

Yeah, you should wait for the superior HD version that will be running Unreal3.

Just buy it now.

ALL of Nicalis' games have been announced as WiiWare only thus far, and since Cave Story has been such a huge success for them, I doubt they'll be changing that anytime soon.

Well arguably,
the real use of the machine gun is that it doubles as a jetpack.

The
machine gun
is totally worth it for the
lev 3 down + shoot
capability. When I realized that it was actually
propelling me higher instead of just making me hover
I said wow.
