CBOAT: ESRAM handicap for now, but will get better

Shouldn't mods know better than this now tho?

Y2Kev could just be playing a role, taking the piss if you will.

Or maybe not, I don't know ...... my sarcasm detector could be broken, it has been strained of late in the gaming section.
Yes, I kid. I think my actual expectations on how these machines will do in the short term is very well documented.

There is no alternate reality where PS4 does not exist. It does exist and it's cheaper even. People who buy the X1 probably do it because they are a) not informed and b) because Halo in 2-3 years. No one would be hyped for DR3, KI or Forza 5 as much if those weren't on X1.

- I prefer Xbox Live to PSN
- I prefer Xbox controller layout to PS controller layout
- X1 games have my interest
- I'm excited for the Xbox/Windows/Windows Phone ecosystem

You're making it sound as if people can only buy an Xbox One by accident. We knew since februari that PS4 would be superior to X1. There are people that aren't bothered enough by the power difference between X1 and PS4 to not buy an X1, why is this such a difficult concept to grasp? Games and ecosystem is the reason.

Since the itroduction of the iPhone 4, competing hardware consistently outspecced the iPhone. Even today there are spec discussions and the main reason people take iPhones lesser specifications for granted is because of the apps and the ecosystem. So please, stop portraying Xbox One buyers as ignorant idiots. Yes, 500 euro/dollar is a lot, but 400 euro is also a lot for a KillzoneKnackmachine.

That's actually exactly the reasons I want an X1, plus I'm quite curious to see where they take the content side of things, because believe it or not, a gamer can be interested in the TV as well.

I know you do buddy, shit anything to have laugh ....... I don't envy you guys at the minute, the forums are awesome and crazy at the minute.

Your workload must have increased as of late.

The power of a smartphone is not nearly as integral to the overall experience as with a console. The comparison is lacking. Also, the PS4 is only a Knackmachine if you buy it for the first month and then never touch it again.

In February we didn't know that the power difference would be that big and that MS would even ask more money for a weaker console. If you are super excited for Kinect or a Die Hard Halo Fan, I can maybe understand if someone is choosing X1 over PS4. Everything else? Not so much. Doesn't seem like a rational decision then, just emotional, which is fine and legit of course.

Your argument was 10/10 and it was a great response to a lot of people in this thread.
Except for that last line. That just makes you sound bitter.

But regardless, a lot of truth in this post.

There was never any talk of the 360s eDRAM being a hurdle, or the WIi Us, or the PS2s, or the Wiis. So what's going on?

External memory has catched up in terms of bandwidth. In addition, the requirements for memory capacity are continuously increasing with increasing resolutions and new techniques, and embedded memory struggles to meet them (although Intel's approach to go with an additional die of 128MB eDRAM on package is not as limited as the XBO's).

Technical curiosity, what's the difference? I'm guessing EDRAM must be more limited than ESRAM, to have such substantial benefits without being a direct replacement.
The difference is that static memory requires more transistors and consumes more power, but doesn't have refresh cycles. Dynamic memory is smaller and more energy efficient, but needs to refresh the memory cells every few cycles, causing short stalls. So SRAM is bigger, more expensive and draws more power, but it's a bit faster and lower latency.

There's also a third type of embedded memory, pseudo-static eDRAM, that offers the same performance as real SRAM while still being smaller and more energy efficient. It uses complex logic and multiple buffers to hide the refresh cycles. That's what Nintendo uses.

The problem with eDRAM in general and pseudo-static RAM in particular is that only very few foundries have the technology and know-how to produce it. Mostly Renesas and IBM.

Good on you, buy what you like.

Its close to 2014, all my TVs are 1080P, some are smart TVs with you tube and Netflix and even have wands with them, all satellite is 1080i with hours of recording and playback....we have smart phones, Ipads, youtube access choices on probably 6 or 7 devices in 1 house...

I expected next gen consoles to be 1080P60 without ANY effort. I have enough app machines and functionality from enough devices not to give a damn and cannot even be bothered to count

(even worse is because we are UK most apps are rubbish - to get current 2013 films you have not many choices in UK other than Sky or renting films...)

Sorry, just don't get the 'app thing

There was never any talk of the 360s eDRAM being a hurdle, or the WIi Us, or the PS2s, or the Wiis. So what's going on?

There were some 'problems' discussed with eDRAM in 360, wrt tiling etc.

There were definitely issues talked about with PS2's memory design.

Xbox One's design is like PS2's but with even more challenging capacity ratios (32MB:8GB vs 4MB:32MB) and less favourable bandwidth payoff (100-200GB/s:66GB/s vs 48GB/s:3.2GB/s)

If next-gen games have more and more render buffers you're probably going to similar tiling issues again as 360 for starters. But the bigger change is if it becomes necessary to use eSRAM for input to the GPU, for texturing etc. Then you're going to have games doing some of their GPU reading and a lot of their GPU write to 32MB of memory - that could be quite a headache to juggle, getting data in and out of eSRAM in a timely fashion, and cutting resolution of render targets and assets might in many cases be the faster way out, in some cases maybe the only way out.

There was never any talk of the 360s eDRAM being a hurdle, or the WIi Us, or the PS2s, or the Wiis. So what's going on?

Not sure, but I guess part of that is because the 360 had GDDR3 (DDR2 based graphics memory), which wasn't as much of a bottleneck (relatively speaking) as DDR3 is now for graphics. So you could achieve decent results on the 360, even without utilizing the eDRAM extensively. While on the X1 you are absolutely forced to make efficient use of the eSRAM if you don't want extremely shitty results.

I might be totally wrong on this, but it seems logical to me.

The fact that you are actually serious is hilarious/sad at the same time.

"It's not rational since it isn't the same as my preference!"

My preference is PC. :) I'm out of console gaming because 30FPS.

So you're just throwing away almost every exclusive. Just because you don't like them?

No, because I do think that none of them is a "must have" experience worth 500$ and I do think, except maybe some Forza HC-Fans, everyone would agree with me if these games weren't on a new console.

Calling the PS4 a killzoneknackmachine is extremely shortsighted. If you completely dismiss all of Sony's other studios and exclusives games (which greatly exceed xbox's imo) that will release some great stuff later on then I fell bad for you

Man this forum is going nuts, I sense fuses about to blow.

Dat Next Gen feel of 720p.

At this point, Xbox One would need to come out with some stellar first party titles in order to bring me over. It seems insane to me that they are charging $500 for a machine that will mostly do 720-900p for third party titles when third party titles make up 90% of the releases in a given year. PS4 has a major advantage for many because it just makes sense to own the system that is going to have the best quality for the majority of the releases in a year.
.

Thats the pretty hilarious part of this whole situation.

For MS Its "all about the games" unless of course they are comparing themselves to the Wiiu then graphics seem to matter.

1080P doesn't matter unless your speaking about Forenza....

Game content is important. But you can still have great game content on a Gen 1 console . Getting a new console "NEVER" guarantees good game content but it should guarantee graphics which are capable of using the native resolution of todays Televisions. The sole reason to upgrade to a next gen console is the advanced graphics capabilities.

Neither the PS4 or XB1 are exactly cutting edge but Sony has done just enough with its hardware to pump out 1080P titles and at worst you should be seeing no lower then 900P

For Microsoft 720P and 900P will be the norm, nothing they can do short of a massive overclock will stop that. Obviously even their paper Specs must have told them this and they simply made the decision not to care .

So I also made the decision not to care (about Microsoft) and will have my first Sony Console.

I expected them both to easily hit 1080p60fps as well. The apps are not as important to me either and the phone analogy was not very good. People buy iphones because of their brand loyalty and/or its UI/marketplace. The specs between the iphone and other leading androids aren't too far off.

Forza and Killzone are benefiting a lot from launch status, along with pretty much every other launch game ever. They have followings, sure. They're critically acclaimed too. But in the franchise hierarchy they're not really blockbusters.

People buy shiny new boxes and want shiny new games to play on them (and rationalise their purchase internally.)

Wow, cant take you seriously, this sounds like something from a Microsoft marketing campaign slide than from the heart of a hard core gamer.

C'mon man, there are some issues with his post, him stating his opinion on this is not one of them. I know a lot of people who like that cohesiveness between all their systems.

"As much". I know Forza has fans and there would be hype even on 360. Just not as much. It's well known that launch games, often mediocre, profit a lot from being on a new hardware because people, oh shit here it comes, want the new hardware anyway and just need something to play on it. If anyone would choose XB1 over PS4 ONLY because of Forza and DR3, that would be incredible shortsighted. With these two games you have about 20 hours of fun - but most people buy their consoles for several hours. It's also not a Wii Tennis situation here where the games offer something completly new. You know exactly what you get there and you played those games, more or less, before. I barely understand how a veteran gamer can be excited for these games if it's not the new tech it's running on. And this is the point where you run into problems when you choose the XB1.
Best selling Xbox game is Halo. Its already announced (and for 2014?). Plus a Halo film series to be released on the console, and directed by Spielberg.

Second best selling game on Xbox was Gears of War, which originated from a partnership with Epic. This gen this partnertship is with Crytek. We will find out how it turns out soon.

Third best selling game on Xbox is Fable. New game already announced.

Fourth best selling game on Xbox is Forza. Launch game.

Xbox Live is a strong point for the Xbox. The power of cloud, dedicated servers, smartmatch.

Kinect gave the X360 a huge bump. New Kinect in the box.

Now list Sony's best selling games on PS3 and tell me how playstation fans will be playing their favorite games in the near future.

Reason to buy a PS4? its cheaper! I'm doing it right?

True. But when one shiny new box is much better at the most important selling point - this generation has no innovation to offer besides better graphics/tech and maybe gameplay concepts which build on tech at some point - at a cheaper price, how do you legitimate buying the inferior one at a higher price? That is something I do not understand, except it's only an emotional reaction (e.g. brand loyality).

what planet do you live? did you forget BEST SUPPORT since ever is on sony plataforms?

There were enough people on GAF warning people not too expect 1080p 60fps as standard on the xbox one/PS4. The PS4 has a better chance of it being more powered then the one but that will struggle eventually as well. If resolution is your major concern than surely you should be on the pc. Pcs are outclassing the new consoles easily especially with the new cards from NVidia and Amd. It just depends what your different reasons are for buying a particular console.

Wow, cant take you seriously, this sounds like something from a Microsoft marketing campaign slide than from the heart of a hard core gamer.

What's wrong with saying that, surely there are people going with the PS4 because they have a vita or will get one and like the integration between the two.

Agree, but me and 10 year old son want as well as good graphics

1. To play on controller against others with controllers. Pixel perfect gaming mice do not mix.

2. To have party chart and friends list is important (many moving from 360 to Ps4, none to PC)

3. System must be easy to use, no possibility of cheating for online games (some PC I have read), no possibly of nasty virus, Trojans etc etc

So our only option is Ps4, which I am not ecstatic about as have to play for online as well as our 2 x 360's....but give me another choice !
