CBOAT: ESRAM handicap for now, but will get better

Agree, but me and 10 year old son want as well as good graphics

1. To play on controller against others with controllers. Pixel perfect gaming mice do not mix.

2. To have party chart and friends list is important (many moving from 360 to Ps4, none to PC)

3. System must be easy to use, no possibility of cheating for online games (some PC I have read), no possibly of nasty virus, Trojans etc etc

So our only option is Ps4, which I am not ecstatic about as have to play for online as well as our 2 x 360's....but give me another choice !

lol this sounds like my grandma

There's a difference. One is insulting a group of people and the other is insulting a corporation's console. I'm not sure why the ban hammer has not come down yet.

Oh, I'm not at all trying to insult anyone, sorry if you feel insulted. That's not my intention. I don't think that this console stuff is important enough to insult. ;) I think what we are discussing here is the..."why"?

Best selling Xbox game is Halo. Its already announced (and for 2014?). Plus a Halo film series to be released on the console, and directed by Spielberg.

Second best selling game on Xbox was Gears of War, which originated from a partnership with Epic. This gen this partnertship is with Crytek. We will find out how it turns out soon.

Third best selling game on Xbox is Fable. New game already announced.

Fourth best selling game on Xbox is Forza. Launch game.

Xbox Live is a strong point for the Xbox. The power of cloud, dedicated servers, smartmatch.

Kinect gave the X360 a huge bump. New Kinect in the box.

Now list Sony's best selling games on PS3 and tell me how playstation fans will be playing their favorite games in the near future.

Reason to buy a PS4? its cheaper! I'm doing it right?

Sums it up nicely.

"As much". I know Forza has fans and there would be hype even on 360. Just not as much. It's well known that launch games, often mediocre, profit a lot from being on a new hardware because people, oh shit here it comes, want the new hardware anyway and just need something to play on it. If anyone would choose XB1 over PS4 ONLY because of Forza and DR3, that would be incredible shortsighted. With these two games you have about 20 hours of fun - but most people buy their consoles for several years. It's also not a Wii Tennis situation here where the games offer something completly new. You know exactly what you get there and you played those games, more or less, before. I barely understand how a veteran gamer can be excited for these games if it's not the new tech it's running on. And this is the point where you run into problems when you choose the XB1.

Lol 20 hours of fun? I'll drop about 80+ hours into Forza alone. I cancelled my PS4 Preorder because nothing at launch for it interests me at all. Xbox One at launch looks better for me.

Opinions man.

No. 1 excludes PC
No. 2 excludes Nintendo
No. 3 excludes everything (there are cheaters on every platform) but mostly Microsoft, as the XBOX itself is a Trojan

A PS4 owner is you..

You could always go with the PC, get used to Keyboard and Mouse and enjoy everything else you asked for free..

I can't tell you which one to get, these are the kind of things you have to consider when making your choice and to be honest I can't see anyone who owns any of them being too disappointed. Getting an Xbox one myself mainly because my brothers are getting one, xbox live friends are , like the games and love the controller.

There is no alternate reality where PS4 does not exist. It does exist and it's cheaper even. People who buy the X1 probably do it because they are a) not informed and b) because Halo in 2-3 years. No one would be hyped for DR3, KI or Forza 5 as much if those weren't on X1.

Actually Most people buy an XB1 for the same reason they buy anything. "Familiarity" .

Most people do not embrace change , actually it scares the shit out of them . That's why Car owners flock to the same manufacturer or you stick with a certain brand appliance. Ever wonder how that gas station down the street has customers while charging 30 cents a gallon more..

It doesn't matter how much better or cheaper something is, most people are creatures of habit. Take away the routine and you piss people off, this is why so many XB users got pissed with all the DRM changes .

So you will hear a lot of people say I prefer Live, I like the XB controller, I have friends that play ... it doesn't matter that they are going to pay more or if the graphical experience will be less .

On one level they are pissed at Microsoft that they put out a lower specked next gen console but at the same time they are pigeonholed by their own fears of change to do anything about it.

So XB1 buyers are not ill informed they are just human.

You started off great but all of a sudden...

The problem is that the ps4 is like a car going at 60 which is its maximum speed on a highway and the xbox one is like a car going at 25 with a flat tire when 50 is its maximum speed. By time the time the xbox car stops and gets a spare to replace the flat tire , the ps4 would be long gone ahead nomatter how much to the limit the xbox one drives

lol this sounds like my grandma

thank you son LOL...

Seriously, I have a gaming laptop, and all the CCcleaner, malwarebytes and MSS I use I still got a documunet has moved - redirecting virus. Even our IT support people could not move it for me. I live with it.

I worked for Motorola in past, have 2 degrees, I am not a tech idiot. But PC is a concern compared to a totally closed system like a console.

Or you can call me grandma, I don't mind

Yeah, habit is probably a big part of that. However, there were also people who had the habit playing on PS2 or buying Sega consoles. It's not like rationality can win over.

While this is something that I hear a lot from my friends, I also think it's possible for people to not be putting graphics very high on their list of priorities, and choosing a console based on other reasons. If graphics were a factor that played into consumer's choice as heavily as some of us like to think on GAF, we'd see most of them on PC, COD would not sell more than BF, and the Wii would not have sold as much. I think it's perfectly valid for someone to be buying an XB1 knowing that it is slightly inferior graphically.

I meant it teasingly ;) I've just never experienced getting a virus from gaming on PC.

It seems to be a trend with some of the posters defending their XB1 choice. I think some on GAF get them a little too defensive. But shinnn will just be shinnn

You need to get this PR spin out to the masses. Even in America, they don't seem to realize there's no reason to buy a PS4 except that it's cheaper.

I retract my last statement then brah. No hurt feelings.

Very few people care about graphics.

Most People care about Graphics per dollar.

It's a key differentiator.

Yeah, habit is probably a big part of that. However, there were also people who had the habit playing on PS2 or buying Sega consoles. It's not like rationality can win over.

There are plenty of people people who have just owned XBOX's exclusively (like myself) which are making the leap to PS4. Just like in politics you have the vocal left and right then you have the people in the middle who make the rational decisions.

There was never any talk of the 360s eDRAM being a hurdle, or the WIi Us, or the PS2s, or the Wiis. So what's going on?
It's all relative. The XB1 is probably as easy to program as the 360 and the 360 is considered the more developer friendly console this generation since the PS3 was such a pain in the a$$. However now Sony got its act together and the PS4 has jumped ahead. It is now even easier to program than the XB1 or 360. With such tight deadlines for launch we are seeing the ease of PS4 development pay off. Over time developers will find ways to get over the hurdles of the XB1 however it's lower specs will always be an issue.

It should also be noted that while developers are finding workarounds for the XB1 they will also be using that time to learn the more advanced capabilities of the PS4 like using the GPU more for computing tasks. So while the XB1 will get better, so will the PS4. The gap between the two consoles performance isn't going away anytime soon. This is different from the current gen. The PS3 was harder to program but the raw performance capability was there. In the next gen the XB1 is both more difficult to program and less powerful. Because of this don't expect the performance gap to close like it did with the current gen even though both will get better.

Thats the pretty hilarious part of this whole situation.

For MS Its "all about the games" unless of course they are comparing themselves to the Wiiu then graphics seem to matter.

1080P doesn't matter unless your speaking about Forenza....

Game content is important. But you can still have great game content on a Gen 1 console . Getting a new console "NEVER" guarantees good game content but it should guarantee graphics which are capable of using the native resolution of todays Televisions. The sole reason to upgrade to a next gen console is the advanced graphics capabilities.

Neither the PS4 or XB1 are exactly cutting edge but Sony has done just enough with its hardware to pump out 1080P titles and at worst you should be seeing no lower then 900P

For Microsoft 720P and 900P will be the norm, nothing they can do short of a massive overclock will stop that. Obviously even their paper Specs must have told them this and they simply made the decision not to care .

So I also made the decision not to care (about Microsoft) and will have my first Sony Console.

not to care to the extent you're here telling us all why we should care.

let people buy what they want. we're gamers and if it has the games we want then we'll get it.

The 50% difference between PS4 and XB1 is considering, as far as I know, that both consoles are maxed out.

Yeah, habit is probably a big part of that. However, there were also people who had the habit playing on PS2 or buying Sega consoles. It's not like rationality can win over.

There this rubbish again, people here thinking you can tell someone what they can buy with their own money. The "rational" choice on buying one of the new consoles is as long as you are happy with it and enjoy, that's all that matters.

Very few people care about graphics.

That's actually a good point. We haven't really had a console out that was inferior graphically but was more expensive than the competition. Microsoft is taking a big risk here, and I'll be interested to find out if the Kinect and the XB1's entertainment supercenter slant will pay off for them in the long run.

Even when the eSRAM is fully utilized from the ground up in an engine, it is still feeding an incredibly underpowered GPU. The X1's GPU if released in the PC world would of been a low tier card even 4-5 years ago.

Th eSRAM will help out later on in the X1's lifespan, but to what degree? Xbox 360 developers also have experience with that sort of architecture due to the 360 using eDRAM and the Wii U also using 32MB of eSRAM. So its not something new that is foreign to developers like the Cell architecture was.

In the end, the X1 is simply underpowered. Images will get cleaner over the lifespan of the system, but I do not see any major jumps in actual graphic quality on the system. You will get better then what is seen at launch of course, but in the end, 3 years from now developers will be pretty much toying around with the PS4 and able to work on 4K games on the PC with sub 500$ cards able to run at 4K resolutions +30fps steady. By the time the X1 is hitting its stride, it will look generations behind the PC and perhaps a full generation behind the PS4.

Crytek is MS's big gun technical studio working on the X1, and Ryse is what you get out of it. Nothing spectacular there. GG's work on Killzone is pretty damned spectacular, and you still got Santa Monica Studios, Polyphony, Naughty Dog, Team Ico, and Media Molecule out there.

There were enough people on GAF warning people not too expect 1080p 60fps as standard on the xbox one/PS4.

60fps is a design decision, not a requirement. Not every game HAS to run at 60fps to be at its best. Games with more defined animation routines like the Souls series, Monster Hunter, Dragons Dogma, etc. are just fine @ 30fps. I care more about steady framerates then highest possible framerates. But also, if you look at the list of PS4 launch titles, 1080p 30fps/60fps seems to be the standard and that standard will only solidify as we move away from launch and devs build entire games from scratch with finished hardware kits.

I think someone noted earlier, but while the mainstream consumer may not be able to discern the difference between 900p and 1080p, a narrative can still develop in public perception: "the PS4 is more powerful and the games all look better on PS4."

For people considering relatively expensive upgrades essentially to play better versions of their annualised blockbusters, this can have impact on purchase intent.

That will contribute towards a value proposition already bolstered by a lower pricepoint.

You clearly did not play Dark Souls on PC, because you wouldn't say that afterwards. The difference is staggering.

Good stuff from CBOAT. Looks like the console will have long legs after all. If Sony could do it with PS3, MS surely can as well.

Wanna take a breather, champ?

He has been banned far too many times for this sort of shit. Looks like some people just don't get the message.

Yeah, brand loyalty only goes so far. Sony learned that lesson the hard way after the PS2 gen ended. I saw that kendog guy go off on albert penello on his twitter acct yesterday and claimed he was seriously thinking about cancelling his xb1 preorder over the whole 720p cod thing. It can end pretty quickly.

Or put another way, I have only ever experienced 720p gaming with limited effects, with 1080p exclusive to SKY and bluray films.

As a console gamer, yeah I want to play some games at 1080p with god rays, lighting, volumetric fog and all that jazz.

Ask me in 6 months if I think it is worth it on Ps4, I don't know yet, but I want to see for myself.

Sure, but we are asking for why you enjoy something and there are more rational reasons (I bought the technical superior product at a lower price) or more emotional reasons (Heeey, it's my new xbox). However, like I said, both are legit and please do what makes you happy. But in a forum like GAF where we go in deep, it should be ok to discuss the "why" without everyone ticking it out. It's also no shame to just state "I'm doing it because I like Brand A more than Brand B". Nothing wrong with that.

I'm disappointed you forgot to mention the content coming from exclusive partners like the NFL, 5 billions of transitors or the magic of Kinect.

I expected better coming from you.

What's up, I asked an honest question?

So many have been kicked already for being undercover PR, it's the only reason I asked.

I know for sure Shinn isn't a shill. He's just an avid fan. ;]

He has been banned far too many times for this sort of shit. Looks like some people just don't get the message.

I wish people would tell me to take a breather before I got banned. Lmao.

I can get a really hot head sometimes. Especially when people start talking from their ass. Lord knows that gets me fired up.

Let's not get hyperbolic here. The GeForce 9800GTX+ was released in July 2008 (five years ago), was by no means low-end, and amounts to ~700GFLOPS to Xbone's 1.3TFLOPS, 10GP/s filtrate to Xbone's 12, and 70GB/sec memory bandwidth with no eSRAM to Xbone's 68GB/sec to main memory and 109GB/sec. So the Xbone's GPU would have been high end five years ago. It was mid-range four years ago, and entry-level three years ago.

Err, that's incredibly hyperbolic I think. 5 years ago was what, the AMD Radeon 3000 series? A modest 1.4Tflop GCN card like in the One would kill any of those.

By the time the X1 is hitting its stride, it will look generations behind the PC and perhaps a full generation behind the PS4.

given the huge tflop difference in a few gpu generations over this gen I don't think the difference is nearly enough to deliver anything approaching a full gen difference in visuals.

it'll look nicer, not dramatically. both will be well behind pc.
