A buddy of mine at work is dying for Natal, and when I ask him why, he can't think of anything other than Netflix and dashboard navigation. :lol

"But it will be so cool!"
Thats the EXACT reason why I'm excited for Natal.
And it will be awesome.

It's not exactly taking advantage of Natal
you can do that with any camera

So uhhh about that courier? Will it even be revealed this year? MS let Apple get the 1Up again?
Courier is not a product. It's a product concept. MS will never sell such a product. They will set the hardware standard for the platform and develop the OS and apps and let OEMs build them.

And if you didn't notice, Courier is VERY pen (and INK) centric. It's not an iSlate competitor. It's another productivity focused platform from MS.

The 360 working as a Uverse box is so awesome and useful that I inherently distrust it and assume some self-defeating catch. They were talking about some sort of TV PC subscription thing at the time too weren't they? I bet that's it. Another bill that's not worth paying on top of cable and Live Gold. Oh well, could have been great.

Well yeah, but not on xbox.

I see. I thought you were making a comment about the tech in general, and not simply stating that was a feature you personally want.

That said, I think this may be a bit pricey if that's all you plan to use it for :p

After just having spent $3500 on the Samsung LED-TV 8050, i have decided that my 3DTV will be the LED-9000. But do we know anything about the 3D differences in quality we'll see from the brands? What will the difference be from LCD Shutter Glasses to RealD? Other than the price, weight, form factor, recharging/no recharging. ?

btw, the Samsung LED B9000 series won't have the ugly food introduced earlier, it'll come with this:

samsungled9000-3l.jpg

I don't understand their 8000-series, is it just a rerelease or remake of the current B8000-series?

has sony's press conference started? i haven't seen any talk of their Bravia 3DTVs or PS3 motion controllers at CES?
Their conference was yesterday. No discussion about motion controller. Showed some 3D TV action.

I don't know why people were expecting a live Natal demo. Much like Apple have their own conference later in the month, Microsoft have their own conference next month which seems to focus on Natal in particular.

And we're not going to see final software for Natal until the thing is finally unveiled with it's final name and hardware and a release date. We may get a glimpse of some stuff at Gamefest. Maybe GDC. But the bulk of Natal's software showing will be E3 2010. I could have told you that after last years E3 conference. It is in no position to have to prove itself on the software front yet; it's 10 months away. I don't know why people are talking as if Microsoft must be struggling to create software for their technology. They simple haven't shown us anything aside from a few tech-demo's. The software could still end up sucking, but as of right now we just have no idea. That isn't particularly worrying or telling.

Conference sounded boring as hell though. Glad I chose to go to bed after reading the leaked page.

Are there polarized screens coming? I'm curious about 3D but there are four of us in the family so shutter glasses could get expensive quickly

There's already one on sale from JVC. Although it's in no way cheaper than a 120Hz TV + four pairs of shutter glasses.

“CELL,” says Toshiba about its new range of CELL TVs for the US, “makes everything better”, and while we’re not sure whether that includes lingering health issues we’ll concede that the company’s new ZX900 Series CELL TV certainly cheers up any mild Winter depression we’re having. The vast 1080p HD set will come in 55- and 65-inch versions, and the CELL engine apparently throws in 143 times the processing power you’ll find in a regular TV. As for what Toshiba does with all that horsepower, they use it to churn through their new True Super Resolution technology.

True Super Resolution fettles SD and HD picture quality in real-time, upscales to 1080p, slices out unwanted compression artefacts – particularly in streaming internet video – and automatically manages brightness, contrast, gamma, sharpness, color saturation, and color temperature. It also has Toshiba’s ClearScan 480Hz frame rate tech, 1,000 cd/m2 brightness and 512 dynamic controllable backlighting zones mustering an impressive 9,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. It’s all similar to the Japanese Toshiba CELL REGZA 55X1, though without that HDTV’s eight simultaneous tuners.

Connectivity includes the regular HDMI and the like along with WiFi 802.11n, Wireless HD and an ethernet port, while there’s also a 1TB hard-drive lurking inside for DVR purposes. The ZX900 can stream content from DLNA servers and computers, or stored on the HDTV itself and streamed elsewhere in the home or remotely. Toshiba even added webcam compatibility for video conferencing.

Unfortunately, what Toshiba won’t tell us is pricing or specific availability, only that the ZX900 Series CELL TVs will land later in the year.

WATCH EVERYTHING IN 3D

CELL TV has true 3D TV capability, and much more. For native 3D content, CELL TV utilizes a Frame Sequential System that changes from 240Hz in 2D mode, to 120Hz for the right eye and 120Hz for the left eye in 3D` mode. This system accepts multiple 3D input formats, including MPEG4-MVC, RealD, and more. However, when true 3D content isn’t available, CELL TV has the solution. TriVector™ 2D to 3D Conversion takes any 2D content and converts it into 3D in real time. This means that with CELL TV you can “Watch Everything in 3D!” including 2D sports, movies, TV shows, video games, and more. 3D TV creates a more immersive home theater experience, and CELL TV’s TriVector 2D to 3D Technology significantly expands the amount of time you can enjoy 3D, truly setting itself apart.

WOW!!! Talk about a TV. Cell enabled TVs. Kuturagi must be so pleased. But why isn't Sony doing something like this?

Interesting... any side by side shots showing the benefits of this "True Super Resolution Technology"?

This is fucking amazing, imagine replacing a window at home with one of these screens. So awesome. Total Recall = reality by 2015 please!

Has cool potential, but I'd never want that on a laptop. Too distracting.

Am I the only one that thinks that the Xbox Game Room is a cool idea? It'll all depend on the support it gets, but I think it's going to be fun. :D

Sony's head doesn't know which hand is wiping its ass. You can pretty much ask why the Playstation brand wasn't expanded to an umbrella during the PS2 years. PSP should have been (or evolved into) a cell phone. PS3 should have had a video, music and games store from Day1. Sony's just run by idiots. A company that owns all forms of entertainment media rights, and builds the devices to playback such content, but can't get any of their divisions working together to actually put it to use. PEACE.

Apparently, this guy will become available in Q2 of 2010 (for iZ3D gaming systems and RealD video), at prices starting at $90 -- with prescription eyewear to become available in Q3.

No releasedate? So can we actually take these to the theater and watch a 3D-film as long as the cinema uses RealD technology, like in Avatar?

They had to use Bono and The Edge there? Man, they'll sell out to anything...

That is the idea. However you have to bear in mind, not all 3d cinemas use RealD. Though it does appear they dominate the (non-THX) market in the US vs Dolby.

It's really funny in a way.

Microsoft entered the video game market because they were afraid of Sony using convergence to become the defacto owner of the living room. Sony only really went in the direction MS feared about 2 years ago... and they only went there (in part at least) because MS pushed the industry that direction with the 360.

Will someone please explain to me why these 3DTVs are so great? Sure, Avatar was awesome. I can't, however, imagine having to wear glasses everytime I want to watch something in 3D. Not be mention how impractical it would be for something like sporting events. What if I have a group of buddies over for a game one weekend, am I supposed to have an additional 5+ sets of glasses sitting around? Even if they're relatively inexpensive, I don't need/want more clutter in my living room.

A worst this will be a very short-lived fad, and at best it will perform well with a very niche market, I can't see this going totally mainstream with your average consumer. I will, however, take back everything I just said as soon as it can be done without glasses.

Also, the transparent OLED is awesome. Maybe not so much on a laptop, but I can think of a lot of other places I'd like to see one (like a HUD for my car).

Also, where's Courier? :(

3D is cool that's why. If you have too many friends over then just watch the game in HD. 3D will be around for a long time.

We’ve always had a soft-spot for remote control helicopters here at SlashGear, and so Parrot’s AR.Drone quadricopter - which throws iPod touch/iPhone remote control, video streaming, augmented reality gaming and military-spec auto-pilot functionality into the mixture – was bound to appeal. We caught up with Parrot at CES Unveiled this evening to grab some hands-on photos and video; check out our first-impressions after the cut.

Unfortunately the WiFi-soaked show floor meant that Parrot’s iPhone remote control wasn’t playing ball; instead they were demonstrating the arguably more impressive (in a technical sense) auto-pilot systems. The AR.Drone navigates using two cameras – one on the nose and one facing downward – together with accelerometers and other sensors (more details in our initial post from this morning). Parrot include several brightly-colored objects which the AR.Drone can use to navigate, responding to their position so as to maintain safely in the air.

It’s a far more effective system than, say, WowWee’s Bladestar R/C ‘copters, which use a more rudimentary IR system to hover and avoid obstacles. Of course, Parrot’s AR.Drone is likely to be a whole lot more expensive than the Bladestar; the company is staying quiet on exact figures, only saying that the flying gadget will arrive sometime in 2010.

It’ll come with access to an SDK with which developers will be able to create their own applications – including in-air battle games – for the AR.Drone. That also means Parrot can sit back and wait for others to come up with alternative methods of remote control; as it stands, if you haven’t already got an iPod touch or iPhone then factor in buying one of those as well, since there isn’t a “native” controller in the box.

It all seems reasonably rugged, with a foam chassis that protects the blades when you experience the inevitable crash-landing, and we’re assuming that direct control with the iPhone’s accelerometer (which will also see birds-eye footage from the front-facing camera beamed back to the smartphone’s display) will be similarly responsive as the auto-pilot mode. We’ll save wholehearted appreciation until we’ve heard exact pricing, but right now we reckon this is one gadget a whole lot of geeks young and old might be putting on their 2010 holiday gift list.

So cool. Flying this in neighbor's yards to spy on them would be cool.

Auto-stereoscopic monitors are pretty poor at the moment, the viewing angle is really small. You might think wearing glasses is irritating, but I certainly think it's worth the greater image depth. The reason I probably won't be buying one this year is just the lack of content, the tech is fine to me.

We should thank our lucky stars 3D HDTVs weren't around when Roseanne was popular. There are some things I don't want to see that well. :lol PEACE.

Think about it dude. You can have your windows made of it. Your glasses....imagine augmented reality (the android app) in combination with this. It would be amazing.

Souldriver said:
Indeed.

Their product seems to be very nice, but because their competition is motherfucking Google and Apple, they won't get much support from the industry, the developer community and the public. Kinda sad.

They might hold on to enough of a niche to stay afloat, but it seems more likely somebody buys them. It's a nice OS, but the market just can't sustain this many platforms, something's got to give.

I was thinking more on your laptop, I don't get why they would be presenting it like that.
