Hardware

PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in both unit and dollar sales during July 2023, with Switch ranking 2nd across both measures. PlayStation 5 continued to lead the 2023 hardware market across both units and dollars. Total video game hardware spend fell 19% during July when compared to a year ago, to $292 million. Declines were experienced across Playstation 5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch.

Software

Remnant 2 from Gearbox publishing was the best selling game of July, instantly becoming the #18 best selling game of 2023 year to date. Two other new releases appeared among the month's top 20 best sellers, including Pikmin 4 (#6) and Exoprimal (#16). Many classic Call of Duty titles experienced a resurgence in July, as multiplayer service functionality was restored on Xbox platforms aligned with price promotion. Call of Duty: Black Ops II returned to the top 20 best-sellers list for the first time since April 2017.

Mobile

Sensor Tower reports the top 10 games by U.S. consumer spending in July as: Royal Match, MONOPOLY GO!, Roblox, Candy Crush Saga, Coin Master, Pokémon GO, Gardenscapes, Jackpot Party - Casino Slots, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Ebony.

Accessories

Accessories spending during July increased 8% when compared to a year ago, totaling $173 million. Gamepad spending gains were the biggest driver of positive segment performance during the month. Pokemon Go Plus debuted as the #3 best selling accessory of July in dollar sales. The PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge remains the best-selling accessory of 2023 in dollar sales.

I refuse to believe the CoD resurrgence. I played Cold War last night or rather tried to. Sat in the lobby for 15 minutes, couldnt find a game. I tried three different times, 5 minutes each and it couldnt find a game.

This is the free PS+ game of the month that came out 3 years ago.

MS might need to fix that matchmaking. 🤭

The "normal" PS5 first in sales and income, Switch second, and xbox last in everything, in August PS5 is going to be crazy with the temporary sale, September will be fun with the Spiderman 2 packs on the one hand vs Starfield and how many xbox sells.

Great hold from Final Fantasy XVI, didn't expect it to be over Pikmin 4 even with the lack of digital for Pikmin 4 and the $10 dollar higher price. In July FFXVI dropped to 20th on the European chart but remains in the top 5 for the U.S, perhaps the action-based combat appeals to Americans more than Europeans.

Seems the US loves it, Europe warm, Japan lukewarm (guessing sales are about 700k with digital in Japan). Rest of the world probably warm to it. Must be in the region of about 4-5mil shipped and digitally sold about now or at least soon, given it was 3mil week 1.

All Consoles had a decline in hardware spend versus July 2022, this is stated in the 6th paragraph. I shall add this info to the OP.
This is interesting because this is around the time PS5 stock became better.

It's going on a full year and it seems like Series consoles still haven't recovered. Phil said stock is supposed to be better, I guess we wait until August to see?

Matt also posted about supply constraints ...so yeah....

That's a reasonable take. US is definitely its strongest market, maybe surprisingly so, but it's in a lot of markets and even where it is lukewarm like Japan, it's done decently. It can probably hit 6-7 million sold by the end of the year depending on where it's currently at, and maybe if there are sales promos for it later (like "Buy a PS5, pick one of 4 games" and FF XVI is one of the picks).

Still think the mention of a PC (or as the fine print said, "other versions") six months after the PS5 release has dented some of the sales potential on the PS5 itself. There are probably people thinking it'll release on PC or even Xbox January next year and waiting for that. There's transparency and then there's hurting your initial sales. That fine print did the latter, and it got so bad Yoshida had to try explaining "Well, no, actually..." in interviews later on.
