CNN: Sega is refashioning itself as a PC game maker

Refashioning itself as a PC game maker, yet can't be bothered to release Phantasy Star Online 2 in the west more than a year after announcing it.

Sorry, what's the evidence here? Sega released a PC game? I don't hear talk of dozens of much-loved back catalog darlings being re-released on Steam (hello Shenmue).

I think the article is talking about how they are releasing games that target the PC now like the RTS's and Football Manager, but people are taking it to mean there will be even more PC focus in the future. I don't think Sega's Japanese developers are suddenly going to be PC focused or anything like that.

This isn't really anything new. SEGA have owned Sports Interactive and Creative Assembly for 7 years, the recent acquisition of Relic simply cements their position in the PC space.

Saying the company that released the last 8 Football Manager games (consistently some of the biggest selling PC titles) and the last 3 mainline Total War games is 'refashioning itself as a PC game maker' is just dumb and incredibly late to the party.

The refashioning quote comes mostly from the fact that sega dropped most of it's retail console output apart from sonic. Total War, Football manager, PSO 2 are SEGA's biggest games nowadays.

They've stated themselves that they will focus on digital distribution (though that also includes Mobile and console DD). It's not a sudden development but it's become more aparent the past year.

Yes, Sega just released an AAA PC game, and are set to release a new PC game in their largest franchise later this year.

Don't forget Football Manager, those games always do well.

This. Keep it up Sega. Your games are great! Give me Total War: Warhammer!

I'd love to see what they can offer in the next few months, they can make budget titles and sell it on Steam that otherwise won't sell as a full on boxed release on consoles, not to mention the console size limit.

PC is always nextgenÂł
Everyone should go PC, but still release some console games out of mercy for the peasants

Did binary domain do well on the PC ?

I'm a little surprised with all this wishful thinking nobody mentioned this one.
I doubt it made a lot of money. Breaking even would already be a triumph.

Then again, it was a gigantic flop on consoles as well, as far as I know, so hardly something they could blame on their new PC focus.

Man, Rome 2 is going to sell like hotcakes.

I'd really like to see them port over more of their older console stuff though. Shenmue, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Valkyria etc.
Just get some eastern european workhorse studio to port them and throw them up on Steam to save on printing/distribution costs.

Oh, and give an update about PSO2 already while you're at it.

Already is:

Rome 2 pre-orders “six-times” that of last Total War game, series had 2 million sales in 2012

SEGA has announced that Total War: Rome 2 is the fastest pre-ordered Total War game to date, with over six times the number of pre-orders its first official week compared to Shogun 2. The Collector’s Edition has also pre-ordered well, with over half the available copies already sold out in the US. The firm also said Total War sales hit 2 million last year “without a major release,” to support the series. Those who pre-order the strategy title get the first DLC, The Greek States Culture Pack, free on the day of release. Rome 2 is out September 3.

I think this is great news!

The best Sega games have been on the PC lately. It seems to be were Sega is doing it's best!

Steam needs Virtua Fighter and Virtua On damnit!

Sega should port the Valkyria Chronicles trilogy to PC, then sit back and watch the money roll in.

I would double dip on the first game, as I never finished it on my PS3. I'd skip the second, and play the third.

Jesus this is a great idea. The PC is the perfect home for strategy-based games.

Well, let us not forget that the Japanese branch of Sega is still mroe liable to do console work at the moment.

I mean they put out a million genesis games, like five or six Dreamcast games, and stuff like Sonic CD and Nights out, not that any of that really has to do with them becoming a PC game maker.

Has anyone mentioned Segasoft yet? Anyone remember it? I always thought that was Segas PC initiative back in late 90's. They did release a few Saturn ports and some original Ip under that banner. Though they have only been dipping their toes in PC gaming during those times, and now they are diving in.

In usual Sega fashion though, they've been missing out on a few things here and there - most noticeably something like Daytona and VF5FS PC after putting the new version on PSN/XBLA, but hopefully they'll get around to it. Well, if not let someone else do (the ports).

Good. While I get Sonic games being exclusive to Nintendo systems given similar markets, everything else Sega releases is perfect for PC.

Honestly, Sonic's "exclusivity" to Nintendo isn't anything new. There were tons of Sonic games on Wii/DS that didn't hit the HD consoles, and Sonic games on HD consoles that didn't hit Wii.

It's like they have a Nintendo team and an "everybody else" team.

They're just making a big deal about it now, because they haven't announced what's coming next for the PS4/XB1.

They only expect to sell 860k units of Rome 2 and FM 2014? That's kinda low.

It's kind of refreshing to see them aim low with their expectations, unlike say the Capcom or Square Enix forecasts.
Maybe they come out at the end of that quarter or something? Because I'd expect both of those to sell a million each at least.

I know FM2013 was close to a million copies sold back in may, and I expect Rome 2 to be the best selling Total War game. As far as I can tell it's the most popular setting and it's getting lots of PR.

Should make for some nice headlines for their sales numbers next time. :)

Rome 2 is releasing on the 3rd of september and seeing that Shogun 2 sold over 600 thousand copies in a month I'd say their expectations are quite low.

I'm glad that Sega is finally finding success in one of the markets, but I can't say that I'm happy that Sega is slowly evolving into the Total War/RTS company. These games have nothing in common with the line-up of games that Sega once made special. While they are putting more and more effort into their PC studios, the Japanese studios are becoming increasingly irrelevant. It's sad to see that one of Japan's flagship developers is nowadays being reduced to Japan-only Yakuza games, Japane-only Phantasy Star games and a Sonic game here and there.

Maybe they're underselling a bit on purpose?

Sort of the opposite strategy of what of what Square did with their "Haha, no guys we're totally not in trouble because we project Tomb Raider will sell ...um...*scribbles number down* 14 jillion copies!" and then having to come out and call your actual sales numbers disappointing even thought they were actually pretty good.

The japanese side becoming more irrelevant kinda already happened before they doubled down on PC, and this is what's turning the company around IMO.
(Again IMO) Ideally success for Sega on PC would eventually lead to their japanese studios becoming more PC focused as well. A lot of their classic stuff was very arcade-like in nature, which is actually a very good fit for digital releases on Steam as those can be very flexible in pricing, and cut down on printing/manufacturing.

They probably thought "Rome 2's budget was ~40% bigger than Shogun 2's, so we expect to sell ~40% more units in a similar time frame" which makes sense, unlike SE's numbers(as you've mentioned).

Secure the Warhammer 40k franchise so I can get DoW3 with Tau & Necrons plz.

I think they already have, SEGA is listed as the publisher on the steam page of Dawn of War.

I'm pretty sure the 40K license isn't that hard to secure anyway.

There's at least a couple of 40K games in the works right now at different developers.

I suppose this is why Yakuza 5 will never come to America!

Nah, if Yakuza 5 never comes over it's because they think it doesn't sell enough on consoles to make it worth it.

I guess they could put it out on PC as well. But to be honest I doubt it would sell much better than on console, probably doesn't help that it's on it's 5th game.
