Illini defense looks a lot more like the one they had for the first half of the season... before Michigan broke their spirit.

e: despite the td.

good defensive hold there by Illinois to sap away any potential momentum. Time to go back to the bread and butter and run it down their throats.

Well since I'm an Ohio St. fan, this is good for the B1G ten, but it makes me worried that we are going to get housed by Arkansas.
Ok Big Ten people, it's time to make a choice. The internet needs its acronyms and your conference is no exception.

Your choices:
Big Ten - Classic, well known, but it's two words and who likes writing that?
B1G - New, edgy, clever. Plays well with sans serif fonts on forums and its 3 letters.

NOT A CHOICE:
B1G Ten - It is like saying 'Big Ten Ten.'
B1G TEN - All caps like the logo, but it just looks gaudy. See above as well.

For what it's worth, I like the B1G option. Short, 3 letters like the SEC, MWC, ACC, etc... and it gets both words in those 3 letters. Start a trend, the internet and college football thanks you.

This runs counter to traditional midwestern values©.

I'm not going to be told what to do by some SEC slapdick. Let alone by a Gator fan. :D

They should have started taking knees when it was down to a minute and change. Low class play there. (Iowa knew to take a knee at the end of their game.)

But hey. Dude's going out with a bang.

The QB is a true frosh. It's forgivable.

Take knees and then punt? What?

QB should've gone down there though, I agree. But what're you gonna do, he was excited.

Baylor calling a timeout with 2 seconds left is just as bad.

No, I meant to run out the clock. A minute left, line up the victory formation for a couple of knees and end it. Dunno, I just like teams that end games gracefully like that.

Not a big deal, of course. I don't begrudge the kid his bowl TD.

I stopped watching the game, but yeah. Tit for tat.

Reminds me, didn't USC do something like that a few years a go? They were lined up to take a knee, the other team calls a timeout, so they bomb a TD in for good measure. Was hilarious.

I agree in theory. I'd prefer if they had just ran it out (though I don't know that taking a knee would've taken enough time off) rather than going with the bootleg trickery.

Yeah might want to play some two deep against Oklahoma State.

Madden celebration. Bet that becomes a flag sooner rather than later.

I thought it was a reasonable proposal :D . I would be impressed if B1G caught on. It's clean, modern, and I just like it.

Sorry, man. I covered the team for the radio station for a year, and I realized I was too cynical (being from SEC country) to take our program seriously. Also didn't help that only one guy on the whole radio staff knew dick about football.

Then Persa gave me an ounce of hope in good then he got hurt in a hilarious way. And then I was at the Wrigley game when we made the Illinois backfield look like Bo Jackson and Walter Payton.

:lol

If you only followed Northwestern recently, then you have had it too easy compared to previous seasons.

In the past, Northwestern tended to have a trend of 3 bad years and one mediocre/decent year. To say that this is a down year with a 7-5 record speaks something about a growing football program. A championship team is not going to happen overnight (or in comparison not the same way it did in 1995), but it's certainly turning heads around the country slowly.

Granted as a student, the worst season was definitely in 2006 as I only started following in 2005 (freshman). That was the most pain I've witnessed with Northwestern football (Basketball was worse), and I have to say people who start to follow now have it really good compared to the time I started to follow this team.

I'm not optimistic as well about Northwestern's chances, but the past few post season games have shown that Northwestern can play down to the wire. Let's hope Pat Fitzgerald can prep this team well and come out with a bowl win.

We're not hitting on all cylinders yet, but we'll get rolling and score 2-3 TDs in a row at some point.

That personal foul penalty killed us though, besides that I'm pretty happy with the defense.

I'm more than aware of the history of shittiness. Every time Wilbon came to talk, he'd hammer it in that he only saw 1 win through all his years at school. :lol

The problem to me is that I hate fans that don't know the game, partially because I come from the south where High School football and the SEC is so damn huge regardless of age or gender. Since the Northwestern student body comes from all over the country, we have a healthy chunk of east coasters and Californians that never watched the game in the student body.

So when these folks try to talk up the team as being talented or having moxie, I just have to shake my head considering the talent gap between us and good programs. Not to mention that the praise for Fitz has sort of bothered me. I understand that he's done well with largely poor talent, but here's a guy that refuses to hire a special teams coach - a part of the team that has struggled and costs us 1-2 games every single year he's been here. Our punt and kick returners always look like headless chickens struggling to even catch the damn ball (see: Michigan State). Demos speaks for himself and part of that comes down to our blocking.

Also, we won't get any consistency until we get some new facilities. Ryan Field is without a doubt the worst stadium in the conference if not the damn region. My high school's gym is about ten times nicer than Welsh-Ryan. We have the 6th largest endowment in the country or whatever. I know schools have been more frugal with money since '08 but spend some of that shit on athletics facilities sooner rather than later. Ticket sales go hand-in-hand with the facilities.

Don't get me started on Carmody.

EDIT: Oh, I'm graduated, mane. Think we're the same age.

Speaking of Wilbon, I missed his appearances on campus, and I didn't see my 2010 friends graduate as well which he spoke there, too. I wonder if there's a script or recording of it somewhere. I'll check later.

I have to admit. I used to be one of those fans. :lol Everyone has to start from somewhere.

If you look around college football nation, there are other fans from other schools like that as well (i.e. Stanford).

Recruiting will be there in time as long as the quality of the program keeps rising.

I have to agree on your statement for lacking a special teams coach. Right now, the coach is behind that one, and I suppose in time he'll either get better at that position or eventually it'll hit him one day.

Aside from that though, he's done well for 3 star recruits.

With the new university president, no question will the facilities be revamped. That is on his priority list, and that will happen within time. I would say the next few years.

I kind of wish Northwestern would put a plan action to build a stadium next to Norris at the lake, but I know that's not going to happen.

Regardless, yes, the facilities are old and do need a revamp. Most of our endowment is spent on research though, which the school highly prides itself for it.

Although Carmody is not the same caliber as Fitzgerald is in skill for their respective sports, he's had a lot to work with Northwestern basketball. At least now, recruiting is much better than it has been in decades, if not forever. Now Northwestern is not taking foreign players (i.e. Croatian) and is raking in more of Chicago recruits, which makes more sense. How did even Northwestern had problems recruiting in their own backyard is a head scratcher.

Otherwise, the Princeton Offense, while somewhat genius, only goes so far, and Carmody can't teach his guys to defend at all or get boards. Ugh. That's what bugs me most of the team.

I suppose this will be the year that finally the team makes it to the NCAA dance for the first time in school history. Really hope that happens, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't.

2009? I graduated a tad bit later in the summer as I needed a project to finish, but that's awesome.

I thought I was the only Northwestern guy on GAF. :lol
