PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh fired head coach Mike Haywood on Saturday, saying he could not continue in the job he held for only 2½ weeks because of his arrest on a domestic violence charge.

Haywood was released Saturday from St. Joseph County Jail in Indiana on $1,000 cash bond, said an officer at the jail who declined to give her name, after the charge was upgraded from a misdemeanor to a felony . Within hours , Pittsburgh put out a statement from Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg, saying Haywood had been dismissed and the school was reopening its search for a coach.

Haywood, a former Longhorns assistant and most recently Miami (Ohio) head coach, was hired Dec. 16 to replace Dave Wannstedt .

Pitt will reopen its search in the same week the Panthers play Kentucky in the Compass Bowl . Wannstedt has not said if he will coach the Panthers in the game.

Haywood was arrested Friday after a custody issue developed with a woman with whom Haywood has a child, police said. He told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, "It isn't fair. The truth will eventually come out."

It all depends on how the controversy has affected the team. If it's really messed them up, we're fucked. But if they've managed to somehow turn it into motivation, I think we'll have a great game.
