What do you guys think about coaches leaving their team before bowl season is over? Minnesota hired NIU coach and they will now be without him when they play in the Humanitarian bowl. Should their be a rule against this? I know this happened last year, I think with Cincinnati?

I dont have a problem with it, but most the time it makes the coach seem like a douche.

Yeah, I think it should be if a team is in a bowl, any negotiations for new coaches can't begin until after their bowl game and the coach can't discuss anything either with another school. The current system completely screws over a university and their current players. With emphasis on the players.

But the recruitment issue is a good point as brought up by a poster below me.
 
It is better for the coach to leave early. If they announce they are leaving and stay with the team it isn't like the team is going to play hard for him and if he doesn't announce it until after the bowl game and parts town in January it puts a lot of pressure on the school to find someone in time to recruit before NSD.

It really annoyed me when Houston Nutt left before the Cotton Bowl... we had tickets to that game, which was coached embarrassingly badly by our interim coach. I think Nutt is highly overrated, but I think we would have been a lot more competitive against Missouri if he could have coached that last game. I really don't understand why this happens. Is it the coach's old team not wanting the coach to influence recruits to the new school? Is it the new team wanting the coach to cut off all ties immediately? In our case, we knew that a lot of the assistant coaches were likely joining Nutt anyway, so it didn't make sense to let them remain for the bowl game and not the head coach.

From best to worst, here are the possible ways to leave for a new coaching job:

1) Stay for the bowl game, only pursuing opportunities after your team plays in its bowl;
2) Leave for the new job early enough so there's enough time for the interim staff to prepare the team;
3) Leave for the new job just before the bowl game;
4) "Prepare" for the bowl game while interviewing with another school, making promises that you'll be at current school for the long haul, before getting utterly embarrassed in the bowl game THEN bailing for the new job.

Where does trying to bail 2 weeks before NSD without telling anyone until you are out of town (thanks for the tip ESPN) all the while calling early enrollees and telling them not to go to class (even though they are already at school and class starts the next day) and follow coach to said school and leaving the NCAA investigating the program fit in the list?

Interesting point for Alabama in regards to "No More Stache of Wannstedt"

What can you say? Going 7-5 in the weakest BCS conference in the land when you were widely predicted in the pre-season to be conference champs can get you fired. Also, Note to self: Just because a guy was a head coach in the NFL does not mean he is a good football coach.

For 'Bama, though, this one may have an impact. Outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri was an All-American linebacker at Pitt in the early 1980's, and his family ties to the school run deeper. His wife was a former gymnast at Pitt, and his son is currently the starting quarterback for the Panthers. Obviously it would be a very enticing offer if Pitt pursued him, and there have been rumors that he would be on a short list of potential replacements if Wannstedt indeed got canned. We'll have to wait and see how this one develops, but keep your eye on one as a possible move in the coming days and weeks. As a final note, if Sunseri does go back to Pitt, I imagine you can probably expect that his son, current 'Bama commitment Vinnie Sunseri, will likely head north with his father.

I was wondering about that game, why did it get held back so long?

Also all 3 service academies made bowl games this year! How long has it been since that happened?
 
i think they did it because this way its a bigger game since its the only one. but they knew the win wouldnt count towards bowl eligibility since its so late.

i don't think it has happened before but not 100%

Because its supposed to be the last football game of the season. The SEC had to screw that up by having a championship game, and then they expanded the schedule to 12 games, so they had to put it back another week.

I-AA playoffs, yep. Should be on ESPN3.

They did the same last year. And it did count toward bowl eligibility. One of the shitty bowls waited until after the game to finalize their picks because an Army win would've made them eligible.

I remember because it was a pain with the Pick Em.

So what do you guys think about Bama v MSU? My gut tells me that MSU is considered the underdog (I haven't seen the odds), but I really want to believe MSU can win.

Bet 100 dollars, profit between 110-130 on that hundred. Can bet any other amount obviously and it will scale to that ratio.

Isn't MSU a running team primarily? Bama's weakness is stopping the pass.

Bama is favored by 10.5 to 11. Didn't see what the moneyline was.

What the above poster said, I had a more detailed post a page back when someone asked about betting odds if you want some more in depth look at it.

Im really looking at betting on Wiscy for this one, but I havent decided yet.

Yeah MSU is a solid running team, and cousins sucks ass at throwing. Bama should win by 10+.

We're supposed to be, but we've been pretty balanced this year for the most part.

Cousins is decent. He had throwing shoulder and ankle injuries during the last few games of the season, which is why he suddenly got so bad.

I've thought we would get destroyed in our past two bowl games (Georgia, Texas Tech), and we stayed competitive throughout both. I fully expect Dantonio to dig deeply into his bag of tricks in order to win.
 
I have a hard time deciding if pass defense is a weakness or not on Alabama. Yes, they are succeptable to give up big plays on passes, like pretty much everyone else, but sit at #12 nationally in defense of passing yards, and #7 in Pass Efficiency. Most of the yards given up, were to Arkansas, Auburn, and South Carolina, all 3 better than what Michigan State presents. As weaknesses go, it's not much of one.

But what might make that a moot point, is Mark Barron's out for the bowl game, after having surgery.

Best way to beat Alabama (which doesn't seem to be mentioned as much) is stop the running game (which is easier to do this year :( ), and frustrate McElroy by hitting him. This will get him into holding the ball for an eternity, allowing you to hit him some more. And then boom, Alabama's Offense goes into a shell. If Texas could have stopped the run game last season, the outcome is totally different. Hell, Gilbert could have actually won the game, given him extreme confidence. Which could have lead to Texas not shitting the bed in 2010.

Can't believe that Alabama's scoring defense is #5 after 3 losses. Total Defense at #6. Baffling.

Or that the Goddamn Iron Bowl turned out the way it did. It was EASILY the worst running attack by Auburn in the entire season, and they still won.

Don't get me wrong I love Dantonio and will be pulling for Sparty, but I just dont see it.

I forget who was talking about it (might have been Danielson), but the verdict seems to be that Bama blitzed a hell of a lot less this year than last, which is unusual considering Saban's known for his blitz schemes. That would seem to imply that Saban didn't trust his corners to hold up like he did with McKenzie and Arenas out there last year (and the 2 seniors playing in Nickel/Dime sets).

If Miami wants a "Big Name" coach, then I'd pursue the BSU coach. Or go for a successfull DC like the Texas guy or Kirby Smart

Pitt junior receiver Jon Baldwin has told Chris Steuber of NFLDraftScout.Com via text message that he was going to declare for the NFL draft.

The move is not a surprise as Baldwin has made it fairly clear to some of his teammates and others around the program that he was likely to forgo his senior season and head to the NFL draft.

However, the exchange of text messages apparently took place in the aftermath of the news that Dave Wannstedt was out as Pitt's head coach and Baldwin took some shots at both quarterback Tino Sunseri and offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti on his way out the door.

Here is what Steuber wrote about the exchange he had with Baldwin:

"Reached through text message Tuesday evening and asked if it was safe to say he would forgo his senior year with Wannstedt stepping down, Baldwin responded, "No, it's not safe to say that. It doesn't change my quarterback!"

At first, it sounded as if Baldwin was non-committal on his future, but when asked, "Why would you stay [for your senior season] when you have no chemistry with QB Tino Sunseri, a new coach/system taking over next season and possibly hurt your draft stock for the 2012 draft, Baldwin clarified, "Oh, I misunderstood you . . . Heck yeah I'm leaving. It can only get worse. They had me running a lot of deep routes [this year] and yards were hard to come by. I barely ran intermediate routes; it felt like they were purposely trying to disrupt my draft stock."

Baldwin, 6 feet 5, 230 pounds, is the No. 6 rated receiver according to NFLDraftScout.com.

He was not immediately available for comment and a spokesman for Pitt said he is not likely going to be made available to comment today.

Baldwin is one of several Pitt players who went high tech to express their feelings about Wannstedt's ouster, as several players used Twitter and Facebook to express their disappointment.

Senior offensive lineman Jason Pinkston sent this Twitter message out shortly after he heard the news that Wannstedt was gone and it captured the general sentiment of just about all of the players who went the social networking site route to voice their frustrations.

Pinkston wrote, "These people don't know they made the biggest mistake ever letting OUR coach go. He's more than just a coach, he's a father to 96 kids on the team. We came from many different backgrounds. Some of us wouldn't be in college or have the chance to experience college football. We have players on our team who have been turned down at other D1 schools and he took them in and made them family. Thank you coach for everything. You've done so much for me and my family. I would never of had this chance if it weren't for you. I know my mother greatly appreciates what you have done for us. He didn't deserve this from a guy who only came and switched us from ADIDAS to NIKE. Thank you, God bless, hail to Pitt and coach "Wann" and his family."

We didn't really give him the ball. He is a case of one of those guys who has speed but never really had quickness.

Baldwin will play in the NFL someday, but I can't see him ever being an elite player like Larry Fitzgerald.
