College Football 2013 |Week 1| - Death Throes

College football is back, baby! It's been a long offseason, full of autographs sold for cold hard cash, slaps on the wrist for recruiting violations, former Gatas getting in trouble with the law, rule changes, and Wazzu in trouble with the law. Not to mention the slow but steady destruction of the NCAA's already flimsy-at-best reputation.

The WAC is officially dead (as far as college football goes, which is all that matters). The Big East is dead, "reborn" as the AAC, which is pronounced the same way you'd make a sudden death cry. The NCAA is pulling out of its agreements with EA, a portent of the possible end of NCAA Football games. This is also the final year before "Legends and Leaders" is mercifully put to rest. But most importantly?

IT'S THE FINAL YEAR OF THE BCS. And for that, we can all be excited.

This year it's all about looking forward. Can anybody stop Alabama from winning another MNC? Will Manziel escape punishment? If not, which hammer comes down -- the real one, or the squeaky toy one? Who will be the first player unjustly ejected for "targeting" under the new rules? Can't wait to find out!

FINALLY. Let the games begin.

Another year for the pick'em! Thanks again for everyone who participates. This year I've made one minor tweak: We're going to pick 12 games instead of 15. Over the past few years there've been a lot of times where the slate simply doesn't provide 15 really compelling matchups, so we're switching to 12 to try and keep it interesting.

Before beginning, congrats again to Garryk for last year's victory!

Here are the rules:
  • 12 games will be selected by me each week
  • Players pick a winner for each game and how much they think they will win by (margin of victory)
  • You can get up to 2 points per game: 1 point for picking the winning team, and another point if your margin of victory prediction is within 3 of the actual margin of victory
  • You can get 1 additional bonus point in a week if you guess every game correctly (not including MoV)
  • Maximum of 25 points each week
  • Each player's lowest week will be automatically dropped
  • Anybody can play, just post your picks!
  • Some games come earlier than Saturday. Make sure to get your picks in on time.
  • Are you a ban-risk? PM me your email address and I'll keep up with you if you get banned so that you can still get your picks in on time.
  • You have until the time the games start each week to get your picks in. Don't try and cheat by putting your picks after the games have started. Be cool.

Before playing -- please consider if you are going to be playing every week or not. If your plan is to get unrealistically hyped for your mediocre team only to quit when they lose a game that everybody except you knew they would, don't bother!

Also -- this week only, please list your conference affiliation (the conference your team is in -- pick one only). I have most people but with conference realignment it helps if you guys list it so I can keep things updated.

Just crown Vandy as the default Fulmer Cup winner. They have to have pretty much infinite points with all the rape arrests.

I think UCF wins by at least 20 against Akron Thursday. Going to be a long week of travelling around due to my job but I'll be at the game.

Edit: And this being in community.... NO JUSTICE NO PEACE!

Think I'm gonna have to stop reading non-staff posts on our Scout board. Just too much stupidity and fuckery going on recently.

Seriously considered picking TCU, but I think they've lost too many players. I'll hope for that upset anyway.

I forgot my conference picks so I'll borrow bucknuticus' format

AAC: Louisville
ACC Winner: Clemson
-Atlantic: Clemson
-Coastal: Miami
Big 12: Ok St
B1G Winner: tOSU
-Legends: Nebraska
-Leaders: tOSU
Pac-12 Winner: Stanford
-North: Stanford
-South: UCLA
SEC Winner: Alabama
-East: UGA
-West: Alabama
Championship Game: Stanford vs TOSU
Winner: Stanford

Likelihood is that Alabama should win, but I think they'll have a loss, whereas tOSU won't and Stanford just needs to beat Oregon. It would be an interesting match up. Otherwise, if I had to change a pick, I'd pick UGA over Stanford to play Ohio State.

Leaving Memphis today and heading down to New Orleans. Memphis is a ton of fun! It's a shame it has so many issues with poverty and crime. After New Orleans we'll head across the gulf and up into Auburn. 5 days until football? Crazy! Go Cougs!

Just a week or so till we hopefully get the best part of the College Football Season: Meltdown Time.

Though, since it's OOC weekend, and only 2 or 3 "worthy" games, the pickings will probably be slim. So lets go Washington State, Clemson, and TCU! I'd add Mississippi State, but no one could hear OSU crying overCLANGACLANGACLANGACLANGA

Not sure about mre, but I cut back on my posting the last few weeks in that topic (mainly cause not much was going on, besides Signature-Gate).

Still the worst named topic in the history of GAF. We did ban the guy who gave us that title, right?

Oops. Fixed it.

I didn't post much the last week or two because I was on vacation last week, and there really hasn't been too much to talk about. The JFF hysteria seems to have all but died out and there's just not much more to hype up about the preseason.

I blame work. :(

I know that feel. I'm going to guess that most of my posts were months ago, I don't think I've been as active the last month or so.

Really hoping I'm wrong about TCU though. I think they might actually get smacked around pretty hard, but if it's close I consider it a moral victory for the Big 12. TCU will finish 4th or 5th this year in the Big 12, so if they manage to compete against a team like LSU I'll be impressed.

Is TCU's QB rehabilitated? Pachall?
Yeah, he took last year off and now he's back. He'll definitely help them, but I haven't seen any indication that they'll be potent enough on offense this season to keep up with Big 12 teams consistently.

Their O-line is thin though, and that's a really bad thing when you're going against a team with a D-line like LSU's. Their best hope is to try and ugly the game up and keep it low-scoring IMO.

Unfortunately, they're also missing their best defensive lineman in Devonte Fields.

At least their uniforms will look awesome.
