Gah, fucking mortars!

For the new page:

Soviet Weapon Teams
• Soviet PM41 82mm Mortar Barrage shoots slower: 2 to 3.575 seconds.
• Maxim HMG deals less damage: 12.9 to 9.5.
• Maxim HMG setups slower: 1.375 to 1.5125 seconds.

• Soviet HM-120mm Mortar shoots slower: 7 to 8.9 seconds.
• Soviet HM-120mm Barrage shoots slower: 2.5 to 5.175 seconds.

German Weapon Teams
• German Granatewerfer 81mm mortar shoots faster: 4.5 to 2.4 seconds.
• German HMGs, Mortars and AT Guns have 4 entities instead of 3.

Awwww yiss!

I dislike the change to the German mortars RoF, I'd prefer if the chance of dying while in a garrisoned vehicle was guaranteed, also they should have made Soviet crews 4 or 5 men instead of increasing the size of German crews. Making the crews larger has made flanking a far less worthwhile strategy.
Yeah, I'm really not a fan of upping crew sizes for these area holding weapons. Like you said, makes digging out well placed ones incredibly frustrating. Can't believe an MG crew is the same size as a pack of grenadiers, lol.

For those of you who are ACTUALLY playing the campaign, has anyone else encountered this nasty bug on Mission 11 (Polish sniper mission) that causes the game to CTD when you attempt to save?

Also, I noticed that some of my save files for this mission are incredibly small (9kb) rather than the usual ~25mb size which leads me to believe that this is related to the CTD issue for this mission.

There was also this error message in my Warning Log:

22:16:27.59 GAME -- (WorldManager) Unable to load savegame desc 'SAVE:Campaign\german_lines - save24.cohsav': 'File SAVE:Campaign\german_lines - save24.cohsav had invalid chunky file header signature of '''

From what I gather, it's a fairly common problem for Mission 11 (how the hell does this escape QA testing?!?) so I was wondering if anyone else had encountered it and found a solution?

Installed the game via retail disk, assumed it just needed to do some patching ala verifying.
few hours later, still assume all is well, think it needs to download a patch.

Full day later, it's 30% of downloading the whole fucking game again.

Tom Chick talks about the game on the latest episode of Theee Moves Ahead. He goes into more depth about his reaction to the game.

The game launches in compatibility mode now for some reason, what's up? I am running Windows 8.1 beta but I've played the game before with the OS.

That irrelevant 1/5 guy?
I don't know if Tom Chick is irrelevant. At least Rob sort of pushes back on his whole "CoH1 is the much better game, and just because I would rather play CoH2 than do the dishes doesn't mean I should reward averageness with a good score" thing though. But I can see why, since he sees Fuel points and Commanders as a massive downgrade - added to the fact that he expects a lot from Relic as a developer - he could come to the conclusion that CoH2 is a game that's not worth playing.

I think the potential right now is in CoH2's favor as far as vCoH vs. CoH2. People forget how long it took to get vCoH to where it is but in a variety of ways CoH2 is just leagues ahead of it, chiefly vehicles feel so much better now than they did in the first game and considering how important they are in each game, that's already a rather significant improvement.

Otherwise, most of my issues are balance related and that's gonna take a while. As it should with any game of this type.

I was thinking about the inevitable expansion pack in 8-10 months, it's so going to be around Afrika Korps, isn't it? just recolor the snow to yellow, change freezing cold to heat effects. Two factions, British and AK. bam done.

It's funny how simple changes can make profound changes to the entire game - Those small early-game changes that evens out the start game for Germans means they can focus much more on expansion and building better units. It's like a snowball effect. After the latest patch the Germans are a bit tougher and resilient early game which just cascades all the way through the game.

Depends how much they are willing to stray from the Eastern Front the game is based around. However an Afrika Korps expansion would be fantastic!

How long is the campaign?

there are 14 missions, it can take between 10 to 30 minute to beat them depending on the mission. Infantry commando style missions, holding area missions, building up and urban tank advancing missions, there are all kinds. I'd say on captain (basically normal) difficulty probably 6-7 hours. It's rather easy I think, might want to play at highest difficulty if you want.

-------
Ok, after playing the beta and now the final game for a few days, my final thoughts on this game:

- Campaign: I actually didn't hate it like most of the reviews, some cool missions and looks pretty great with very nice effects. Overall it's similar to vCoH campaign mostly, except that there are no connected missions like vCoH had some of those. Overall the campaign is disjointed and jumps from here to there and the story is the excuse to justify that.

Story is horrible of course and the depiction of the Soviets is so comical and one sided, almost makes you feel bad for the Nazis actually, it doesn't give the impression you're fighting for a nation under invasion. The story like I said is just an excuse to tie up disjointed unrelated missions together. At first looks like there is a narrative that follows a character, like CoH campaigns were, but after the first few missions the story pretty much shuts off in the middle until the end. I guess nobody really cares about this aspect, still it's very poor even for RTS games. It doesn't hold a candle to Relic's own past efforts, makes it very disappointing.

- Theater of War:
This mode really doesn't appeal to me much, if you want co-op it's probably better to play a proper game instead. There are some solo and other challenges, you probably need to do these to unlock stuff fill bar. I hate filling up bars.

- Base game/mechanics and core gameplay:

Base Building: From the first time I played the game, I questioned if this game really was designed with base building in mind from get go? I mean, your units come from off map anyway, building take very little time to build and cost little too compared with vCoH. They all look tiny and same, it takes a bit to recognize how each looks like. It basically doesn't matter where you place them, why this game has base building at all? I think it might have been a response to fan reactions and expectation in middle of development, it feels redundant to me. They probably wanted to go DoW2 approach. Still the game feels very similar to DoW2 any way. It doesn't matter where I place my buildings, my units come from same spot any way, where can be blocked by enemy tanks, I tested with AI player, I just put a PanzerIV near the road on the edge of them map and the enemy tank was basically stuck on the disabled area of the map, it can't shoot, I can't shoot it either. You can place a ht with thrower there to kill all the infantry just as they arrive on the map. No need for mines or anything. very easy hit and run tactics. With buildings, I can place them on the back of my base to prevent such things.

Speaking of DoW2, this game still very much plays like that. The Annihilation type game is essentially worthless here. The maps are wide with many ways and too many capture locations. There is no frontline in a sense, the game is basically circling around the map and capping points while the opponents does the same to your points, back and forth. Actually holding your ground isn't all that possible. Just spam cheap infantry in the beginning and cap points... it's not very fun to me. Of course most people play Victory point game, even that isn't the same. The game doesn't feel like a war any more, it's more of a cat and mouse. And that doesn't last long, infantry are pretty worthless when you can start rolling tanks and anti infantry like 10 minutes into the game. There is no mid game, infantry rush -> tanks. Support weapons other than mortars aren't as useful. Flame throwers are very powerful, have decent range and a quite long lasting effect, if your support weapon is caught on fire it's basically over, until it actually starts moving, it's all dead. Every cheap conscript has molotovs too which basically has the same effect. I think I'd rather just build Grenadiers with MG42, far better and far more mobile, good for capping points too!
Russian AT guns are worthless, they have a narrow arc and poor range. why even bother with these? etc.

So you cap some points and get resources going up, if 7-8 minutes, you can probably start rolling HTs and PanzerIV, load your Grenadiers into the HTs and start rolling around the map capping points with P4 escorts! lol, the Russian medium tanks are no much for P4, I'm sure a P4 will win every 1to1 encounter, it can have a MG42 too so it's effective against infantry as well. The game is pretty boring to me. doesn't look like or feel like a war. And the maps are quite similar and poor, all of them wide open with no strategic points where you can hold and fight for . Winter maps only make the infantry even less useful and rush for tanks and HTs faster. It doesn't have much of lasting appeal to me. There is no need to build bunkers or else, no repair or medical stations they are already on the map and you capture them. I actually liked those aspects of vCoH.

The commander system and perk unlocks, I don't think the effects are all that important to this type of gameplay here. Still annoying that they exist, this isn't CoD FPS game, even there it's bad for competition. Skins are nice though.

Presentation: Unit voices all sound the same pretty much, they don't stand out. Just put these next to the voices of vCoH and how every unit talked with a distinct voice and some good quotes. The Germans are entirely boring, Russians are somewhat better but voices aren't any good. The UI looks hideous and wasteful. Big space wasted around the huge minimap showing nothing, why it's that big? the panel in the middle now display information about the unit in form of a description which again is very useless considering the space it takes. The UI looks far too busy, it shows a lot of redundant, duplicate information. Of course you still can't customize keyboard shortcuts...

I don't get the complaints that the game is "more of the same", I wish it was more of the same, it's like same basic ideas of vCoH but the execution is completely different and that makes the matches play out entirely differently and not in a good way to me.

---
What I like about the game is snow/ice effects and overall explosions effects and AT/tanks projectiles look a lot better than vCoH and have more punch to it, maybe looks a bit over the top now, whatever vCoH has is just too boring in comparison.

I'm running the game on:

i-5 2320 3.0 ghz
6 gb ram
660 ti 2 gb

What video settings should I use? COH 2 seems to run a lot worse than I thought it would (only used the benchmark so far).

The game tends to run a bit better than than the benchmark, but in general performance is far from great, especially on nvidia cards. Graphical options seem to make little difference for me until I start really ramping them up. It's not just you!

I'd suggest turning it off completely and inject some SMAA or FXAA instead. Even on low it seems demanding, especially for Nvidia users.

Good article - admittedly I wasn't aware of every detail the engine was capable of, and no surprise there are some performance issues if every footprint in the snow leads to a permanent 3D deformation which lasts the entire game. Overambitious, perhaps?

I can definitely say I'm done with this game online. The community is so volatile and the shit-talking is so rampant - Stark contrast from vCoH. The same "AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA", "LOL NOOBS", "FUCKING FAGS :D: D:D:D:D:D:D:" every. single. game.

Why do I even bother playing online any more.

Really? I only had one bad experience when, as Russians, I flanked a guys MG and manned it with my conscripts. At which point he said "suck my dick" and rage quit.

Other than that it has been "glhf" all the way.

Wow. I have played hundreds of matches since closed beta and have only had any type of shit talking literally 1 time. Every other match barely anything is said other than gl and gg. I am not sure how you are getting so many bad apples but I definitely have not shared that same experience.

I was just looking at Metacritic for reviews for a different game, and I had one of my first encounters with what appears to be review spam, for COH2. One person seems to have made 50-80 accounts and posted 0-rating reviews, voting their own other accounts as helpful for each one, so the overall user metacritic rating is 2/10.

They all complain about Relic being Nazi, written by Nazi sympathizers, anti-Russian, historically inaccurate or similar. Was there actually controversy about COH2's campaign plot, or is this just a bizarre case of someone doing a one-person spam run?

Man, these guys have gone crazy with DLC and the "digital collectors edition" is just ridiculous. It's a shame since I was so excited for CoH2 but I can't bring myself to buy it. Maybe in a year or so when a complete edition is released. Pity.

The only controversy about the CoH2 campaign plot is just how truly awful it is.

Those reviews are being written by pro-Russian nationalists who object to the plot showing some of the HISTORICALLY ACCURATE bad things that the Soviets did during the war.

yeah, like burning and shooting own people etc. this is SO historically accurate, that my great-grandfather turning in his grave. damn, i hate russian government, and does not disagree with the fact that soviet regime did bad things. but, GOD, this game showing some crazy offensive lies, that are very easy to check by the way. Every family here in post-USSR countries has a story about this awful war, and things like this are very painful to see.

but fuck me, right? i'm just another "pro-Russian nationalist"...

I don't know how historically accurate the game is... Maybe Relic should just make another Dawn of War based on the imperial guard. There they can put as many commissars shooting their own underequipped soldiers as they wish

I don't really care about the single player.
in the first CoH i spend 75 hours online, never touched the campaign. I started this one but I guess I'm going to play online most of the time.
I'll be playing these days, if someone's up.

Watched a bit of that stream and stopped. The quality is terrible, and I'm not surprised since it's using that terrible in-game twitch app.

The new balance patch is pretty nice, this is the direction I wanted to see the game head. Also, they supposedly fixed the delay between commands and units following them!

Now I just want support crew sizes decreased, game is on the right path though and that's what matters! As for the free map? Also great to see that included.
