Confirmed: Sony Qriocity on-demand movie service

After the 12 hour maintenance on the PlayStation Netowrk, I went to log into my PSN account today on the PlayStation Site. Then I am greeted with this:

ae03f5.jpg

The logo for Qriocity was not there as you sing on on the PSN until after the maintenance, so maybe the maintenance and the fact that the logo appears on the PS Site means that Sony's streaming service is coming to PS3 come E3?

Mock if old/wrong, etc.

Edit: Information added.

What the fuck is Qriocity?
Sony Qriocity on-demand movie service: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/11/sony-qriosity-on-demand-movie-service-coming-february-2010/

Say hello to Qriocity, Sony's first step toward building an Online Service to rival iTunes, Netflix and anything else that makes money by selling you downloadable content. Headed to your nearest XMB in February and getting a dedicated remote control button on Sony's future TV sets, this service will allow you to stream movies in SD or HD, and Sony Insider reports that with a strong web connection you'll be able to get a solid 720p output. A large roster of film publishers have been recruited, while Sony promises "hundreds" of films will be available at Qriocity's launch.

Interesting. Horrible name, but ... interesting news nonetheless. Would be even more compelling to me if Sony doesn't screw over Canucks by blocking our access. :P

From their terms of use, emphasis mine:
This Agreement applies to software, content and access to software and content provided through or in connection with Sony Online Services, including via the PlayStation®Store and virtual communities, whether delivered onto the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, a personal computer, selected BRAVIA® televisions, Sony Blu-ray® Disc players or otherwise. Such access, software, and content include subscriptions, data, system software, fixes, updates or newer releases and related materials.
On demand to my PSP? Intrigued!

Well, that's much more confirmed than I thought it was.

Yeah. It's been around for quite some time, but never anything notably official. It's been a presence at trade shows for a while.

Would be cool if we could get that up in Canada. But being we can't even get the video store, I doubt we will this. Come on E3!

I have Qriocity built into my TV. I don't really use it, though. The built in Netflix client gets a ton of use.

The TV is a Sony KDL-32EX308. Awesome feature set for a 32" TV for $450ish.

could this be linked to a premium PSN?

Unlimited access to films fro premium customers maybe?? :D

Don't see that happening, but I can imagine the subscription fee including some such content for 'free'.

So this is looking like something they will announce for the PS3 and then BOOM... it will be released. No waiting period just .. after the show, go turn on your PS3 and have at it.

I like it when Sony or MS do that..

I thought the service already launched on US Bravia TVs back in February? It's supposed to be coming to Bravias here in the UK before the end of the year too.

I believe it is coming to PS3, but the appearance of the logo on the PSN sign-in I think is just to signify that they share a universal login (as all Sony services supposedly will going forward, based on PSN).

Built in Netflicks on TVs? Fuck, Canada is so behind. :(

What the hell is the point of this if there's already the PSN video store? :/

PSN = downloadable videos (buy or rent)

Qriocity = on-demand streaming videos (rental only)

That's my understanding anyway.

Wait a min, my netflix streaming disc will still work right? :P

Of course. Plus they said this fall/winter sometime it will be native to the XMB. I think Quriocity may be Sony's attempt to maybe make it worldwide or expand past just US.

They have a huge stable of movies they can put out there where Netflix is not yet penetrated. Sure they may compete against netflix in the US, but you guys should not forget outside the US there is no Netflix.

I also wonder if this may be included in the rumored PSN+ to add to the "value" proposition. If they get newer movies/releases than Netflix gets, this may be compelling. After all Sony has a movie division that can cut them a special deal.
