Consoles screenshots thread (PS4/Xbone/WiiU) [Up: Thread rules in OP]

Is there a way to turn off the reticule, or is it automatically off when not firing?

It's really weird how it works, so if you touch the right analog stick at all it comes on screen, but in order to make it disappear you need to move Delsin around with the left stick without touching the right, then it leaves. Same place different screenshot no reticle.

That's weird as hell.o_O I'll try my best to do panoramas for the game.

I know there's a three pic limit, but I'll drop this batch off here in quoted form since they're a set of sorts. These are figurines from the in-game "Nintendo Gallery" -- click to expand.

(I can't even describe how good it looks at 1080p native resolution -- these 720p captures don't do them justice. Great effects with the dynamic lighting, DOF in background, etc)

Where realistic-looking games are concerned, Second Son doesn't look nearly as impressive as the Thief and Tomb Raider: DE shots people have been posting. Not sure I understand the hype with SS.

The particle effects are nice, and the main character model has a pleasant (if a bit "try hard") design to him, with solid supple-looking skin... but everything else looks muddy and pixelated, particularly where daytime outdoor shots are concerned (the foliage looks PS2 era in the forest shot). Also, his foot's clipping through the tower in the shot above, lol.

Just a gentle critique. I mention it only because I don't see how it's "ringing in next-gen" when far more handsome realistic games (Thief, Tomb Raider: DE) are already out.

I like this way of doing pics, it cuts down spam and lets lots of shots posted in one post. Useful for new releases.

Holy shitballs Infamous looks good. Great shots!

I know the game is older, but I'm finally going through Tomb Raider and think it looks gorgeous.

Infamous 3 looks like Sleeping Dogs.

Ground Zeroes looks like a cross generation game through and through.

Titanfall is AU$80 on Origin.

I really need to get around to playing Strider.

Yeah, maybe playing Sleeping Dogs on PC with high-res textures has spoiled me because Infamous doesn't look like anything special. It really does look like Sleeping Dogs, but in a less interesting setting with a less interesting lead. Wei Shen doesn't have superpowers, though!

Of all the eyeporn this game has provided tonight, this shot is just insane.
That's the worst shot, to be honest. Muddy image quality with dithered-looking sprite-based foliage.

Infamous 3 has better tech going on in the long run and is probably pushing far greater scene density, but the tech similarities are there, as are the colours/tones. It's the neon lighting, I think, the heavy use of ambient occlusions, gentle DOF, and that distinctive water shimmer when it's raining. The image quality is crazy similar to Sleeping Dogs.

Maybe you can describe what I'm seeing but I think one graphical hiccup both games have (in stills, at least) is there seems to be a harsh delineation between foreground and background. Look at the forest shot from Infamous, for example -- the park bench and lodge and such in the foreground seems jarring juxatoposed against the wilderness in the distance. It's as though there's a sharp line where what's "in focus" begins and ends. Maybe that's the distance at which DOF kicks into effect?

That's the DOF, yep. Could get pretty extreme in Sleeping Dogs too.

I disagree, outside of the fact the compression is hurting it notably, I think it's the best shot, because it presents something I'm not used to in games. The density of the tree line, seemingly miles away, is extremely impressive to me.

We've seen lots of cityscapes in games, but I've never seen a game with that kind of wilderness, all viewable from so far. Maybe it's because most games aren't set in applicable locations, but that doesn't make it less appealing to me.

For example, I hate the location of Sleeping Dogs, I really don't like the way the city looks, and none of it felt like it took place in a physical place, it had the problem of GTA3/VC of feeling like some isolated version of city.

Yeah, you can see the DOF "cutoff" in this shot I took, as well, by the street light at the corner:

Oh man, if you think the woods in Infamous look impressive, play the PC version of Alan Wake and prepare to have your mind blown.

I've owned it for ages and never installed it, maybe I should, I love that stuff.

Although I did hate the few hours of Alan Wake I played on 360. I hated all of Sleeping Dogs though, and I still finished that. Probably time to try it.

Sucker Punch really knocked it out of the park, in terms of art direction this time around.

I say this as someone who absolutely hated the way Infamous 1 and 2 looked.

I get a "cup of coffee on a rainy day" vibe from Infamous. It's cozy. Seattle and the Pacific Northwest is an interesting choice for a setting, with a metro flavor not quite like what we've seen in other games. Also, all the rainy weather means they can show off lots of "wet" textures. :)

I may not think Infamous is mindblowing from a visual standpoint (especially after playing Sleeping Dogs on PC), but the art direction is nice among similar open-world city games.

At any rate, I'd like to consolidate a couple of the "sets" I've posted from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. They exceed the three picture limit but they're quoted to minimize size. This way I can keep them together as sets. Click each picture to expand, and remember, in-game they're native 1080p, but WiiU only captures 720p through abload.de. Be sure to check out my six-pages-and-growing Flickr album compiling shots by myself and GAF.

A sampling of the figurines in the Nintendo Gallery, showcasing the strong character design and slick effects like the high-gloss patina, the dynamic lighting and gentle DOF in the background:

I personally love the look of inFamous2, but yeah, the art design is on a whole 'nother level in SS

Can we not post pics of unreleased games? Come on man.

I have to scroll through squinting like an idiot to avoid spoilers (MSG/Infamous). Sucker punch has barely showed off the game now we are seeing all these new images its spoiling the fun.

First time in the last couple of days I've read anyone downplaying Infamous SS' visuals. I know opinions and all that, but imo you have to go out of your way to find it "not anything special". I think artistically and technically it's the best thing out right now, hands down.

I agree with that, it looks AMAZING, like seriously :O

I need to see it in person but some of those images give me the most next gen vibe than any other released game yet.

Maybe RYSE have the same effect on me but Infamous do have the scale beyond the narrow corridor, just WOW.

Yea i think those pics are amazing but i feel sorry for watching them now, i though we can only post un-spoilery images from locations we've seen, it looks so good but I'm now bummed a little that i saw all those new locals =/

ppl should warn about spoilery images from unreleased games.

Ryse looks more impressive technically than SS. One is an open world game yeah, but still
Artistically I prefer how InFamous 2 looks...

Maybe, but it's still an ultra linear corridor game and i think The Order destroys it in this genre.

I think Infamous as an overall package looks better.

When it comes to "realistic" games, I think Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition and the new Thief both look significantly better than Second Son and Ryse. Go over the past few pages and the shots from Tomb Raider: DE and Thief almost look like paintings at times. They're overflowing with atmosphere and an extraordinary attention to detail.

Ryse, meanwhile, has the uncanny valley effect where the skin and musculature might look realistic but the eyes look robotic and soulless. Second Son has wonderful character models but looks like yet another open-world city game -- boxy buildings, open streets and rooftops -- with flat foliage on the outskirts and nothing particularly noteworthy next to the likes of, say, Sleeping Dogs PC, which looks every bit as good in the rain. I do appreciate the Seattle setting, as I said before, and the lighting effects on neon signage and superpowers are nice, but I suspect the novelty will wear off. The game world doesn't look like the next step in immersion when titles like GTAV seem to be more ambitious in scope, scale and density of detail, even if their past-gen trappings had them struggle more with IQ and framerate.

I fully believe in the PS4 and plan to get one, but I think it kind of does the system a disservice to put forth Second Son as proof of its power. I suspect Naughty Dog or Santa Monica will be the ones to really show what the system can do -- aside from their technical proficiency, both studios also have a knack for offering up lush landscapes with awe-inspiring architecture and breathtaking scale. E3 will be interesting. :)

I'll tell you right now all my pics are from the same area we have seen in the trailers or walkthroughs I haven't posted anything from anywhere else only a different time of day. I have many other pics that I didn't post because I didn't want to spoil locations for you guys. I won't be posting anymore though because I am getting deeper in the game and don't want to ruin anything for anyone.

Agree 100%. I also found myself comparing it to Sleeping Dogs PC.

I would not call Second Son a "realistic" looking game. It's most definitely stylized reality. Not to mention the scope is radically different to Thief, Tomb Raider and Ryse, all of which feature much smaller environments and aren't open world in the same way that Second Son is. The fact that Second Son looks comparable (better) than all three of those, while being a huge open world game with incredibly crazy traversal (going from street level to flying over buildings in seconds), has arguably better IQ than any of those three games, and seemingly has great performance while sticking to 1080p, and doing crazy particle effects that most games simply haven't done before, is very, very impressive. Much more so than you are giving it.

Fair points. I don't think Second Son looks "bad," I just don't think it looks particularly impressive in any given screen. But it's true that the net effect of soaking in all the detail and ambiance across a vast open world could add up to something truly special.

I just glanced in the Infamous walkthrough thread and was immediately hit with this... That doesn't look like water. And the rocks have the same problem Pikmin 3 did -- straight lines where the rocks meet the sand. And the foliage... Eeh.

maybe that shot is from the Wii U version :p

I'll probably get a lot of shit for saying this but I don't think Titanfall belongs in this thread.

We've seen some technically stunning games, we've seen some artistically strong games, Titanfall is neither.
Haha, if Wii U pictures are allowed I don't see any reason whatsoever why titanfall shouldn't be. And I'm not talking about the ones that look alright with an interesting artistic style, I'm talking about the crossgen wii u shots.
