CoroCoro Reveals Rockruff Evolution and New Ultra Beasts

These Ultra Beasts look like they could slap your team around. I hope Expansion is strong because it would be disappointing if he sucked.

I want the Rockruff evo on my team.

did you just call XY battles generic and lacking in variety

I did, and most of them are to me.

The Kalos League was pretty great, and select battles throughout the main series were as well, particularly some matches with Sawyer. But some battles (gym battles even) just made me yawn. I mean how many times can I watch Ash cleverly think to do some weird thing that's not even that practical or cool to win a battle that he should probably lose? Like, it's almost like the battles are a delivery device for some weird dumb insight Ash has. Then there's Ash-Greninja, which is just so utterly bland and, again, deus-ex-machina-ish.

You could tell when they decided to write a decent battle, because they did a really nice job with some of them. But many were "Ash is so great so he wins against the odds even though it's kinda really bullshit" at its worst I think.

I'm seriously considering if I want to add the wolf to my team. The line screams "EARLY GAME" but man, I really want to use the wolf. And because I'm getting moon, it'll be pretty easy to get, since I'll be playing at 6-8am game time (6-8pm my time).

but GX was garbage and it took forever to get good :(

And Yokai Watch anime is garbage, there are better anime with a multi-shorts format, like Cocotama.

Fuck this "fun" descriptor like it's some magical thing

Now I want to see it just for the salt.

Dammit that would make me super salty. It would almost be as bad as when they canonized pikachu saying its own name into yellow version.

It's Gladion's inner chuuni coming out.

How is it deus ex machina-ish when it has more setbacks than megas? Also what, XY is his most creative form just yet when it comes with battling, especially highlighted by the Olympia fight. His only bad gym fights were Grant and Valerie and even then it's less bad and more of "not as great as the rest".

Reminder that an actual pokemon fight without restrictions on game mechanics isn't waiting for each other to attack.

Pokemon have been saying their names since RBY

Like the bat Pokemon "BZZZZAAZAA," the goldfish "EEEOOO" and the little pink blob "EEOOTOO"

You will end up looking dumb if you refer to compressed, 8 bit audio for reference, especially if you unironically think Pokemon will sound like 8 bit audio.

No, try actually talking to Pokemon. It was Gen 1 so they didn't translate them, but Jigglypuff, Clefairy, etc. all use their names ("Pipipi!", "Puririri!", etc.)

And let's not even forget...

"Mewtwo!"

Both of Rockruff's evolutions look great. Awesome designs. I prefer the daytime design, but will make sure I get both. I need those adorable pups in my party! Also, UB-02 Expansion looks like a Stand (edit: beaten!) or something out of OPM.

The Sun & Moon anime is gonna end with Ash failing his final exam and leaving for the Gen 8 region instead of taking the whole course over again, isn't it?

Is there really any excuse left to not introduce a new main character for the anime at this point?

Merchandising.

I seriously doubt the entire anime arc will be Ash trying to graduate, it will likely be just the first couple episodes. At the end of the Kalos anime, Delia will tell him that she should focus on his studies again and Oak will send him to help his cousin.

Then Ash wrecks Marlow's bike and they end up visiting the professor, they meet Lillie and then "whaaat, this region doesn't have gym leaders?".

Gladion is most definitely Expansion.

1. Same red and black colour scheme
2. Illusions of grandeur (his tingling right hand and posing)
3. Expansion looks like a super hero which ties to 2. (Henshin?)
4. Owner Type:Null which hints of a relation with Aether (no matter how strained it is)

I find it hilarious to think Ash is going to school because he's lost so many leagues he better start thinking about finding a new career.

Well nobody told Gamefreak that when they made an anime based on Gen I and the Pokemon made actual animal noises. In Origins, no Pokemon, not even Pikachu, says their own name.

The only time Pokemon say their names is the main anime and some spin offs. Outside of the main anime, it's always just animal-like noises. Even Pokken just has generic noises.

What's with the two feminine UBs being obvious as fuck and the masculine one being the first where you actually have to think?
Jellyfish girl isn't that obvious.compared to her sister.

Jellyfish girl is also still my favorite design of the bunch.

Anyone else not really liking Ultra Beasts? Do we need to keep adding higher tiers to Pokemon? That said, I wasn't that big a fan of Primal Evolutions either.

Both the UB-02 forms look like cockroaches.

Wasn't too interested in Rockruff before, now it has my attention. Love both of it's evolutionary forms.

Highly doubt Ultra Beasts are catchable pokémons. Well.... they don't look like pokémons (I'm not trying to start "Pffffff these aren't pokeymans what is GF doing????"), they look like bosses from other RPGs.

Both the UB-02 forms look like cockroaches.
Beauty has the general silhouette of a roach, but Expansion doesn't look like one. Cockroaches don't have a proboscis.

If Beauty is based on a roach, it's kinda hilarious their first roach Pokemon looks like that.

I do like that pokemon is finally implementing actual boss fights and using buffs to make sure you can't outright take out the Totem Pokemon instantly. I do like the 6 pokemon trainer fights though, it really adds it's own flavor in a way. It seems sun and moon will not be wanting for different fights.

Except I already showed you proof that Pokemon talked in "poke-speak" even in Gen 1 games.

There are some pokemon that make animal noises... and they carry over even in the undubbed anime.

Also are you telling me Togepi's cry isn't saying it's name?

And Origins is garbage and is far from a "faithful" adaptation so I don't see why you're bringing it up. And even then Origins wasn't the first to bring this misconception, but the BW2 trailer.

Fuck, I'm looking for the jpg showing that Pokemon saying their names have been a thing since RBY.

That's why I love Origins and like Black2/White2 Trailer so much. No "Lucario!". We actually got an animal cry based on the ingame cry.

I'd be seriously turned off the series if they gave them all voices, and I've been playing since Gen I without interruptions...

I don't really think the cries are supposed to resemble names. Most don't even have the same number of syllables. They sound about as much like the names as they do any other word.

And if they were for the first generation, it was dropped for future generations, unless you think Skuntank's name is a fart sound or Lopunny's name is a wolf whistle.

Okay so Ash faints if Greninja does, I don't think that's really a drawback in any way that affects the battle at all. In-battle, it's literally a hyped up Greninja that requires no held item to get stronger. And of course it's a deus ex, it's literally just "Ash's Greninja is special and stronger than others."

I figured the Olympia battle would come up. I just don't understand the cleverness of it. The actual sequences when they were using/avoiding moves was pretty okay, but the time keeping thing was, there I guess? I mean different strokes I guess, but I kind of just went "oh" when I realized what he was doing. It wasn't shocking or super smart, and it was kind of some kitchen sink bullshit when there were ways for him to win using, I dunno, the moves of the Pokemon he was battling with. I don't think Ash Bullshit™ as a way for him to constantly win is particularly witty, nor does it involve much actual battle strategy.

And yes I am abundantly aware that we cannot have turn based battles in the anime (as I said). However, seeing Ash utilize different aspects of his Pokemon, and mechanics that exist in the game, would be pretty refreshing.

Why can't we have some (more) episodes that cleverly combine different moves/abilities/etc to create a unique battle? Why not have Ash's Pokemon besides Pikachu constantly learning new moves (besides "it's hard") so that way he can change it up in battle a bit? Like, Ash could be using buffs and items like crazy and using all these crazy combinations of things that actually exist in the Pokemon world.

There are sooooo many fun battle combinations that could be adapted that they're not even tryin to explore. It's not hard to come up with cool scenarios that may not be the best in-game, but they'd work well on-screen.

Example: Pikachu's Static paralyzes an opponent with Guts or Facade, who proceeds to stomp him.

That was pretty easy, and it translates to the show well. Heck it might have even been done before, but frankly watching it again would be better than literal non-battle things.

Example 2: Fighting an opponent with Dry Skin, Ash directs a Pokemon to use Sunny Day to give them a disadvantage.

Also literally just make Ash use held items and that's a huge step up. I know "show is for young kids who don't care" but also it's easy as shit to write and the kids will maybe actually learn some things about real Pokemon battles.

Ah you're right. Then perhaps (as someone else had mentioned) Expansion is a mosquito.

I agree. Not exactly how I would have imagined our first roach in the series. In a good way though.

There we go

That's not deus ex machina at all, this is as bad as people saying it's an asspull. It was foreshadowed, it was stated repeatedly with Froakie's attitude, and it was consistent. Why you are bringing held items in the show that never even bothered with it baffles me.

How is it bullshit? How is timing the presence of attacks make it bad? Hell, it was never even done before. It may not be shocking, but the very fact that no one brought it up until then was surprising. And it wasn't only that that made the fight great. It involved seemingly two incompatible mons fighting so well with each other and using enemy attacks against them.

Ash's mons do change what they learn. Froakie and Fletchling traded a lot of moves. The rest don't since they learn to their max already and were late in the gang unlike those two. Note that there's a huge gap between Hawlucha and Fletchling.

You just keep spouting "all those fun combinations!" yet rely on vague interpretations and even going for in-game stuff that wouldn't translate well like stats. All your complaints all go back to "oh it should act like in the games", which has bullshit like Bonerang not hitting Flying types. And you're just spouting moves that his mons wouldn't really lend themselves any use (Sunny Day? For fucks sake). Held items are pretty much unused due to how awkward it looks especially in animation - seriously it's a game mechanic that doesn't really lend itself well in animation especially with certain pokemon - explain to me how a limbless Pokemon would hold a berry for instance.

Maybe I need to see them in game, but the Rockruff evos are the first Pokemon this gen that aren't really doing it for me.

Continue to love the UBs.

Cockroaches are actually pretty nice animals. Despite their reputation, they don't really spread disease and are fastidiously clean compared to other common insects like flies (house flies are ridiculously unhygienic).

The only reason they're so hated is because certain species tend to live where we do.

Don't the legendary birds say "Gaiou!" or something like that? Not sure how that resembles Freezer, Thunder, and Fire.

Seems like it's an on-and-off thing.

Rockruff's midday evolution is TITS

No, wait, not just tits

Ultra tits

The midnight form is a bit too Digimon, tho

In general, I like the idea that day evolution = regular wolf, while night evolution = werewolf
