Crysis 2: Black Fire Mod. You will say OMG

Thunderbear

Mawio Gawaxy iz da Wheeson hee pways games
I posted this in the other thread but:

a) Look at their website. Not all the changes are for the better.

b) Most of their comparison shots are against the non-highres texture map pack that Crytek put out.

In some areas the mod really kills the mood, while in others they did some great texture work.

Wow, at least 3 posters came into this thread to call the game shit. Classy.

I like some of the texture changes, but aesthetically I do not like the new lighting and whiteness of it.

The mod isn't perfect. Indoors looks particularly bad and some of the shadows look a lot crisper than they should, but I can't help but marvel at how good it looks in motion.

Here's another few screenshots:

And another bunch of screenshots I took in the gallery

I refuse to believe those 'before' pictures are accurate. No way Crysis 2 actually looked that bad.

It didn't. Those are some extremely selective screenshots. Hell, check out the Crysis 2 OT, plenty of PC players posting screens and jizzing over how gorgeous it looks.

Hmmm I'm all for that lomography/crossprocessing look but I don't think I'll be able to tolerate playing the game with the black levels looking that bad...they should take a page out of the iCEnhancer mod and use the same type of hdr implementation that they have in there

The game has plenty of awful textures, if a mod can replace those (even if it is just those) then that is a good thing.

The cries for realism is a bit puzzling. Sometimes things looking realistic is great, but let's not forget that real life is more often than not dull as shit. I don't care if it's realistic if it looks better.

I think Crysis 2 will be really interesting to revisit in a year or so. Not because the game is great, but because by then I'm sure some ridiculous mods will be out for it. This is just the beginning.

Why do I ever bother to play PC games at release?
I dunno, I think these types of mods are more exciting when you've actually played the original. Each time something like this hits, it gives you an excuse to return to the game and enjoy the improvements.

I do agree with that, but I still think overly sharp shadows are actually a step back and create an overly harsh contrast.

It is because the initial artstyle tried to be realistic. If it was stylized (like brink) or completely surreal (like borderlands) then people wouldn't try to change it. But it is more along the lines of improving on the initial attempt.

Real life may be boring but the fantastic things that happen in video games certainly is not and it helps immerse people in the world (and increase awe) to see some of the larger events in video games go down in something that looks like it could actually be happening somewhere on this earth.

The lighting in the unmoddified game is extremely stylised. No way all the lens flares and god rays are realistic.

Crysis 2 was far from super realistic, though. Some elements were, but other elements (such as the fucking blinding lighting) weren't. I don't think some unrealistic aspects in Crysis 2 stand out that much.

I'd argue the first Crysis had a more realistic look, personally. Even that was stylised to an extent, though.

Edit: Damn, beaten by a toaster.

This is a mod right? So it shouldn't affect the main game. I once tried a mod for the original Crysis (Maximum Immersion or something) and it sometimes messed up the textures even when running vanilla.

Those shadows are ASS. That's not how shadows work.

Also, why on earth is the concrete reflecting in the second shot in the OP?

Not sure what's going on... but it's showing a reflection of itself, on itself.

Bad Photoshop?

A step in the right direction, but misses the mark altogether.

C2 shadows were fine the way they were, the textures could use more spit and polish - all else is subject to tweaking. Too bad the game itself was a complete rushed turd: otherwise I would love to run through it with some updated effects.

Gaffers can be pretty dumb. Calling this game bad is dumb; it very well may have the best fps multiplayer I've ever played. And its quite a phenomenon too, because nobody plays it due to early on network problems. Its still not perfect, but the gameplay is close.

edit: more on track with the thread...it looks good. Sharp shadows, blurry shadows, I think the truth is somewhere in between.

Too contrasty and the lighting looks really unnatural.

The colour grading and maybe tone mapping beats the original to death though.
Agreed. Contrast is far too high and unnatural. The original shadows were better as well.

Gonna pass on this mod.

I'll stick with the DX11 & high-rez texture packs.
That's what I wanted, I got it, I'm happy. The game looks great.

probably something like the shadows they implemented in DX11 mode you mean?

Wow, they really went out of their way to make the "before" look shit as possible.

And then added stenciled shadows, and turned the contrast all the way up like that makes the game better.

And WTF is with the blue suit? I never saw that shit.

Maybe I've missed it, but does using this mod turn off most of the cool DX11 features (POM, Tesselation, etc)? I really like the new textures, but miss tess and POM.

Yeah but it doesn't look better. It looks garish, over-designed, and unrestrained. It's a porn star with spherical fake tits and ultra-bleached hair and a dead thousand-yard-stare in her eyes.

Regardless of whether I like it or not, props to both Crytek for allowing this sort of thing to be made by releasing their editor, and the dude who made Crysis 2 look how he wanted. The more options the better.

I just used the MaLDo HD Texture Pack. It looks better with not much of a performance hit. Didn't bother with the Black Fire Mod.

OMG WTF did they do to it?

i bet the people that made this mod have 'sharpness' turned all the way up on their TV.
LOL:p
And probably also contrast super high thinking it'll improve it, hence why he assumes crushed blacks are normal.

If the blacks are crushed even on my crt then I can't imagine how bad it looks on an lcd monitor.

Cool. Rocks look more like rocks and wood looks more like wood. Who gives a shit. How bout they use their talents where it would actually matter. Like somehow helping to create a ZOE3 somehow someway.
