CVG: Microsoft's next-Xbox silence at GDC a "disastrous mistake"

With Battlefield 4's reveal hitting tomorrow (during GDC essentially), don't you think that they miss out when EA can only really announce the game for PC,PS3,PS4,WiiU,360... "and next-gen consoles" ?

Not when they will likely show a trailer of the game at their own event or E3.

Technically 7th gen is done, Wii U released so we are in the 8th generation with a part of 7th gen since the PS4/720 haven't released.

We are pretty much in that awkward position the 360 was in, in 2006.

Generations run concurrently with each other.

For example, the 6th gen on the PS2 remained prominent / relevant throughout 2006 and 2007.

Wasn't there a lot of talk after the PS4 reveal that a bunch of developers had had PS4 dev kits for a while but still hadn't even been briefed on Microsoft's new console? And that was earlier this year.

I don't know about that (except for the creator of Braid who wasn't in good terms with MS apparently), but if we had leaks about year-old devkits and private conferences, it means that at least some devs out there are in the loop. After all if they hope to have third party games for launch, they obviously needed to have external developers know the general specs for some time.

They tryin to squeeze some mo RAM in there

You mean Durango? See, you know that BF4 is coming to MS's next console and so does everyone else who is interested in GDC. MS isn't "missing out" on anything.

And who actually cares about the "announce window"? Seriously, just forums. The only affect announcing early really has on the general public is that it will make them leery about purchasing the current product. Announcing early when your product is still the leader is dumb.

Ding ding ding

I strongly disagree. I think consumers and developers will care, in the sense that it's essentially free advertising for the next console. Tomorrow will be a huge BF4 reveal, with coming to PS4 splashed there with no mention of the Nextbox, that's free advertising and hype for the PS4 and less coverage for Nextbox.

And how have you come to the conclusion that the 360 is leading? America? Sure. Europe, Japan and other markets, no. PS3 as far as I have read, has overtaken the 360 in global sales, and sells more worldwide on a monthly basis. Also, based on EA's figures, the PS3, despite having less software sales, actually makes EA more revenue than the 360 too, due to it's Euro dominance (where games are costlier and reflected in increased revenue). I'd imagine this carries forward across the board. Europe is a tremendously important and profitable market.

where are those salt truck/salt pile pictures?....MS obviously has a reveal strategy; and a public viewing at GDC is not in their plans. Certainly CVG has a right to voice this choice as a mistake in their opinion; but man; I am so sick of the opinions in all forms of media being so hyperbolic

we will see who gets owned when they finally reveal. bookmark it bro

I don't think you can just up and change a GPU like that, unless it really is an off-the-shelf part, which it almost certainly won't be.

Which is exactly what Sony wants them to do. It'll make the new Microsoft even more expensive.

You need a dose of common sense and occam's razor

"see this was the plan all along....Sony would release a hard to develop system with a gimped online, so that MS would get arrogant in the following generation, allowing Sony to get the specs for PS4 out first, but Sony then withheld information so that they could undercut every bit of MS information with even more powerful specs."

I think MS is busy upgrading their specs, DDR3 to GDDR5 ram and a newer more powerful GPU to match or exceed PS4's TFLOP

That's not something you can do in the span of a couple months just as a reaction to the PS4 specs. With Kinect in every box do you seriously think they can build a system with the same specs but with Kinect and sell it for the same price as Sony? The weaker specs are because of Kinect. Plain and simple. MS simply has a different vision for the future.

They will aim the consoles reveal at the mass market. They'll do this by getting a big name celebrity to host the reveal, followed by games.

The MTV movie awards are roughly on at the same time as the rumoured announcement of the new console. It wouldn't surprise me if they do something there.

Why do devs need advertising for games they cant release for 9 more months? "Oh hey, a new Battlefield game is coming out soon, I won't buy this current one. I'll just wait." Announcing a console early when your current one is a success helps no one. It lights up gaming forums like this one and makes the general public not want to buy the current product because its about to be replaced.

Doubt it. Based on recent history, what Sony probably wants is for Microsoft to announce what they have so they can start coming up with their own versions of it.

Outside of Gaf and Gaming Press... They don't have much mindshare.

.

Outside of Gaf and the Gaming press how much mind share do you think the PS4 is holding. I don't think it's holding very much (which I would attribute to them not showing the actual casing during their event).

But we already got the next-generation of gaming in 2010 with Kinect and the launch of groundbreaking and immersive triple-A titles like Steel Battalion and Star Wars Kinect.

meh... it sucks, but i'm sure MS is already working w/ all their major devs to give them all the tools & support they need. they just aren't telling the world about it.

Who still watches MTV?

I know all the leaks about the specs are probably true at this point but its not 100% certain that its true until the console actually gets shown, i mean why would Sony feel the need to upgrade its ram if the 720 only has 'shite' ram and a shite graphics card?. There will of been interenal leaks between Microsoft and Sony all through the development years of these consoles for certain and Sony felt the need to upgrade its ram and there must be a reason for that.

Many of my friends who game have had no idea the ps4 was revealed. Most people who game outside of the core will not know about these consoles till they release or a couple months before. So far the ps4 is getting overlooked. I expect that to change sometime after e3. Outside the gaf bubble people don't know or care much yet.

The article is kind of funny, as if announcement events haven't become the norm already, and as if devs won't make games for the Nextbox because it wasn't at GDC.

I agree

Don't think it's hurting them at all. As long as they release this holiday season, when and where they announce won't really matter. Only downside with all the new multiplatform titles popping up is the fact people can't pre-order on the new console. That might hurt them down the road.

Success or otherwise isn't purely in consumer mindshare. You need to nurture your developers.

While CVG are over dramatising this, and MS no doubt have had developer/publisher meetings, there are still plenty of mid and smaller sized devs that find GDC useful and they are missing that 'marketplace'

"...the doors have swung open at GDC - easily the most important event of the year for the games development community."

GDC, contrary to the thoughts of this angry journalist, is not an event about announcing systems. Its at its heart an event about Game Developers sharring information, networking and learning new tricks here and there. Its about game development period. In the past some have chosen to make it a show about announcing a new game, etc... but in the end it really is a show less about the flash and more about the substance of those attending.

I am glad MS chose not to try and make GDC about their announcement.

I agree with the celeb part but it won't piggyback onto another event. tech companies don't need to do that nowadays.

same was said this current gen.

No disrespect to Rob Crossley, he's written some decent things lately, but I don't care about his opinion on this. There'll be a dedicated Xbox reveal soon and that makes far more sense. MS has surely been talking to devs behind the scenes too.

Doesn't really matter when they show it as long as it's before E3 and is (obviously) a good showing.

The same people getting annoyed by the lack of info will more than likely be annoyed during the months before the system releases.

Trying to create as much anticipation as you can is smart, even if some people get annoyed. -- You know that they'll immediately jump/stop everything to view whatever official news will be given.

people are so impatient these days

Would have been my only contribution to the thread. now I'm just down to, "+1".

It's not like the console is 7 months away and they haven't sent out dev kits. CVG needs a bottle put in their mouths. The next Xbox won't miss out on 3rd party games because they didn't show something at GDC. Get real.

Is this really a serious question? What do you think is the purpose of shows such as GDC, E3 etc. Lol. You think companies announce games only a couple of months before release?

And you need a dose of reading comprehension. I said that Sony would love for Microsoft to match them specs-wise because it would raise the price of the next Xbox. It would effectively not give Microsoft a price advantage. And I said nothing about them undercuting Microsoft hardware wise. They certainly will software wise given their biggest software companies weren't even at the PS4 unveil.

Huh... did we read the same article? He didn't say Microsoft should announce their next console at GDC, but spoke about the fact the Xbox team is not out there talking to developers about the next Xbox

I have a feeling ms will surprise people.

is there anybody who wants to play AAA games with kinect? Friday evening when you come home tired from work I sure as hell dont want to stand up and flap my arms. I want to game on a comfy couch.

Is this really a serious question? What do you think is the purpose of shows such as GDC, E3 etc. Lol. You think companies announce games only a couple of months before release?

Do you actually think the general public gives two shits about GDC or anything that comes from it? They don't. They really really don't. They couldn't care less.

This was a big trend when PS3 and 360 were announced too, and it meant nothing in the end. Assassins Creed is the example I've used here previously. It was hyped for months as a big PS3 exclusive with no 360 version announced.
