CVG sources: Durango reveal in early April

"At Microsoft, unlike our competitors, we believe the time of dedicated gaming consoles is ... over."

Im sure they open something like that.

PS4 isn't a dedicated games console either. Unless you watched a different Playstation meeting than i did.

Oh my word, 'lolgamesjournalism' at it's best'

"A source says" A Sony one at that. Saying they caught them off guard.

The whole thing just reads like made up BS the daily mail would fling together. These companies plan this stuff well in advance and I don't see how MS wouldn't anticipate Sony showing the PS4 before E3 or why it even matters and actually catch them off guard. Sony didn't do anything nobody including Microsoft didn't expect.

But that's the kind of narrative the console war types enjoy.

Panic at microsoft studios and for a reason. They saw the reaction to the sony conference and everyone with eyes was amazed. Wouldn't surprise me if they suddenly have a conference themselves.

In terms of ram and the rumour of the next Xbox using DDR3 how much of a hit to current projects and developers would moving to DDR5 be?

First, I'm very glad Sony went first. Kaz gifs and avatars were glorious.
Second, although I'm pumped like Hell for 720, let's not bullshit ourselves :
Windows 8 is solid but not the next big thing.
Windows Phone 8 is not going places.
Xbox as a service is not the second coming of media.
Surface is great fucking looking but neither versions offer the best in class experiences
720 won't be as powerfull as PS4

720 will be at best a mixed bag. If MS laucnhes with a shit town of highly budgeted new IPs that smoke Infamous and Killzone, it will definitely come at the price of inferior (if only) hardware and a shit ton of constrains (always on, no resale, Kinect 2 still not on par with its vision, need for several W8 products to get the all she-bang).

But anyways, i'll be glad. time to seriously consider where the money will go. it's day for next-gen anyway, but won't bother with two consoles until exclusives are just too hard to pass.
Sounds like you've convinced yourself. Good job.

Given what has been leaked about Durango, there is no benefit to moving to GDDR5 for MS. The entire system is tuned for the available DDR3 bandwidth and it's limitations.

I am okay with somewhat less powerful machine than the PS4 as long as they din't block used games, let us play offline and be more reliable than the early 360 models.

Well they can learn from the Sony presentation.

A lot of potential was spoken of the PS4, I believe Microsoft will actually show it.
They're all just potential until they actually ship something. And even then you're waiting on a lot of potential in these systems to be unlocked, even if we're just focusing on basic OS services (look at the evolution of the 360/PS3 OSes over this generation).

It would be strange to reveal it after GDC. It would be better to announce it before GDC, in order to don't need to be secretive about talking about their dev tools, process, etc.

You just know that Microsoft's event will be way more flashy than Sony's was. They'll wheel out celebs left right and centre.

Very true, get rid of those eye-bag developers. Bring on celebs to demonstration the game.
Totally Microsoft's way.

Here is the thing...

MS should be the more powerful system, with the surprise amount of RAM, above and beyond a Sony console and even with the OS, services, and Kinect.

Why?

Sony is hurting as a company. MS has billions. Microsoft can afford to take a loss or less profit margin.

XBOX Live is a money maker so it is beneficial to get the hardware out there and sell ads and live subscriptions. Maybe MS wants a cheaper console to get more units sold and more XBOX Live revenue, which makes me sad.

"At Microsoft, unlike our competitors, we believe the time of dedicated gaming consoles is ... over."

The irony is that the PS4 will not be a dedicated gaming console either. They are also aiming for the center of the living room media hub. The difference is that Sony knows who the early adopters are and how to tailor their message to them to great effect.

Aye 16 cores and 16GB RAM, maybe with HVD. Sell it for less than $199.

Yup I can see that happening from a mile away. The mainstream press is far too predictable (and shallow).

Its just a constant reminder that the press and as an extension the general public have terrible and poorly informed tastes/opinions that could be discarded if they were just willing to do the smallest bit of research into a subject or hell, even use some 'common' sense to think things through before spouting the first thing that comes to mind.

yes, because the rest of microsoft exists in order to enable you to play games on expensive hardware that you only have to a pay a fraction of its real price for.

After the Sony disaster, ms should be able to walk away the victor. The mainstream media is where this game is played, and the mainstream iPhone type users expects a consumer friendly event which portrays a devicei which enhances and delights their day to day.

Expect the event to revolve around a wholistic connected home entertainment experience with stupidly user friendly man vs tech interaction. Whizz, bang, scifi like interactivity to set the tounges wagging.

I maybe wasn't clear. MS is in a position to market a better spec'd console with less profit or taking an initial loss than Sony is. Therefore they are also in a better position to make what is perceived or actually is a better console so that Sony's system is inferior.

You maybe forget what losses MS took on in their gaming division to get into the market, that yes the rest of Microsoft paid for. Now they could stay agressive and really put Sony down with the money they have and instead may take the easy less expensive but profitable road. Sony on the other hand you would think would take that approach, maximize profits year one. Instead it is flip flopped.

Simply put the rest of Sony can't support their gaming division like Microsoft's can. MS may get profits but what if gamers flock to the PS4 then their plan will have backfired as their ultimate goal was to invest billions and own the living room. MS is taking a profit risk.

I'm expecting a comment about having 8GB of RAM without specifying what kind, references to being a very powerful system that is very easy to program for, and a whole bunch of hyping up the enhanced Kinect.
I'm expecting 12GB
DDR3
, "The most RAM in any console. :)" Then Usher will dance about it.

I'm sure they'll say "8 gigs" once or twice, but they won't go any deeper, nor should they. Most people just don't give a fuck about the differences between RAM types, or they just don't have a clue about them. Hell, Sony only referred to it as "high speed."

The only "8" Microsoft will be saying is "Windows 8".

Which will be the signal for every developer to bail out.

Complete overkill. It'll be 8 GBs at most. I still theorize that Kinect is going to raise the overall price of the machine and they're having to make hardware cuts to make sure it's included in every box.
I remember reading somewhere that the kinect costs less than 20 to make so I don't think it will add too much to price unless they want it to.

Unless there is a massive performance disparity then I don't think it matters if the 720 is less powerful. There are a dozen more important factors. I think that, in the long run, the most important thing will be how open they make their respective platforms to developers. As they embrace digital distribution they need to lower the barrier of entry to getting games on the system. Personally I don't see MS being as willing to do that, they have a history of being very controlling and they're probably too confident to be bold enough to do it.

Isn't there a PS4Eye being bundled with the PS4? I saw someone here yesterday saying it's a better version of Kinect 2.0, so I'd imagine that pricing issue is a wash.

It looks and sounds significantly less expensive and capable than Kinect 2.0.

For me, the million dollar question is, 'will MS pack Kinect 2.0 in the box?'. This makes all the difference. I'm curious to see what their strategy is.

You must be reading different reactions than I am.

I liked the PS4 reveal, but in all honesty, Sony treated it like a developer's conference. The mainstream press is not impressed.

If Microsoft takes the stage, unveils the console itself and shows games that look much better than current 360 titles... all the while unveiling new media partnerships that make the XBOX a do everything entertainment device... I believe the reception from the mainstream will be more favorable.

Especially if a lower spec'ed machine allows games that look good at a much lower price than the PS4.

The strangest thing about Sony's depth sensing camera? They didn't show - or explain - how it could be used in gameplay. At all. They revealed a potentially terrific controller feature and just moved on with the no explanation or detail.

Can't wait to watch 2 hours of "Apps! Entertainment! Kinect! Smart! Some more Kinect" and see virtually nothing in comparison to what I actually care about the most- games.

I fully expect them to dodge around the power of the system, saying its "powerful and smart" but never lay out specifics. =(

Yeah that was just weird.

Yeah that was just weird.

To me it was nothing more than another check on a list. Just like their Illumaroom style display for the racing game Driveclub. Just so, when MS announces anything Sony can say bah we already did/have that or we have that as well. Not a bad strategy and will be used by MS the same way.

The entire presentation felt weird, not bad, but weird because of that.
8 gigs
Illumaroom style stuff
sharing
Kinect style device
Streaming

If there were ANY ruffled feathers i would assume because MS was going to talk about the same stuff and Sony hinted at the same thing.

I highly doubt streaming and sharing would have ruffled Microsoft's feathers as it has been rumored for a long time now.

I also highly doubt it. Thats why I said IF ANY feathers were ruffled it was simply the timing of a public announcement and that it was a point by point.
