Dang it Bobby, why is pizza so got-danged pricey?

Proptip:

The Dominos 5-5-5 deal (3 medium pizzas for 5 each (5.55 in some regions)) with one topping is cheaper than a large pizza with two toppings.

Protip 2: If you have one topping on one half, and a different topping on the other half, it only counts as one topping.

Don't come to Japan. A "medium" is 15bucks. And its more like an American Small. A large (medium for ya'll) can run around 50bucks if you want all kinds of crazy gobledyguck on it. You don't have to tip though and they are super polite and bow and stuff... I don't think I could ever order pizza in the states again.

Why don't you guys in middle America (or wherever you can't find a cheaper, non-chain pizza) buy the frozen DiGiorno pizzas from the supermarket? It'll be much cheaper and it gets heated in your oven in no time: certainly shorter than it would take for delivery. I'm all for "real New York pizza, mofo," but there are times I find a hot, bubbly, slighty crispy DiGiorno supreme delicious.

Make it yourself... the ingredients are only like $2-3 per pizza.

And it's expensive because the process is much more labor intensive than other types of fast food.

Bu-bu-bu... I love New York =(. You know, so many times I've gone to NYC and I have NEVER eaten at a a pizza place there :lol
Don't sweat it, we have better pizza in 'middle america' anyway.

That thing looks delicious, but at some point, possibly the three inch mark, it stopped being a Pizza and became something else.

A bowl of soup.

Can't believe nobody's mentioned Mazzio's yet!

I know it's regional, but I don't think I've run into anybody who hated Mazzio's.

Getting it delivered is for suckers. You can pick up a large one topping at papa johns for $7.
This is what I do. There's a Papa John's about 2 blocks from me. It's awesome.

Pretty much.

I haven't had a pizza from a pizza chain in years. Like has been said it's just not worth it. They cost to much for what you get and they just plain suck. I do pickup from Costco once in a while, but other than that it's from local pizza places only.

I've stopped ordering out, and just get frozen pizza. Or making my own if I have time. Option one costs less, and option two gives you more control and is healthier. Both are probably cheaper.

This. When I time it right, I can pick up garlic crust supreme Tombstone pizzas from Meijer @ $2.50

That's like 7 pizzas for the price of one delivery.

Indeed. 7 months without real pizza was harder than 7 months without real steaks or burgers.

Even if you get it, it's

1. Really, really really thin (as in the crust is more like matzah than bread
2. Generally really wet/moist, and not from sauce necessarily, making the whole thing kinda droopy
3. The fun toppings are not fun. The fun toppings just make an already awful pizza feel even less like pizza
4. What? You like more than 2 ounces of cheese? FORGET IT.

Was never a problem for me as I seriously get coupons for the big 3 every week, and get coupons for local ones every other week. I'm swimming in coupons at any time. Plus picking it up yourself isn't that bad, you get it a hell of a lot quicker than waiting for delivery. Plus no delivery fee or tip needed.

My favorite pizza joint in NYC, Una Pizza Napoletana, would probably get a ton of hate here, judging from the comments in this thread. To be fair, it doesn't try to be likeable in any way: it's only open for dinner from Thursday to Sunday, closes its doors as soon as they run out of fresh dough for the night, serves only 4 types of Neopolitan-style pizzas (no meat toppings and allows no substitutes), has no other dishes or delivery, and charges a sky-high $21 per individually-sized pie. Add to that an arrogantly worded menu and a somewhat belligerent pizzaiolo, I'm surprised it's still around.

Still, the pies that come out are simply incredible, especially the filetti and margherita. Found a couple of pics.

Edit: Here's a NYTimes article on UPN.

People who order delivery pizza and try to "save money" by not tipping are unfit to be wiped into the garbage off the sole of my shoe. Just fucking drive to the place and pick it up if you're some kind of cheap sub-Neandertal who doesn't know how to live in society.

I've had worse, but not a lot worse. There was a place in Rochester called "Pizza World" whose pizza tasted the closest I have ever experienced to sauce slathered on boxboard. Then someone got food poisoning there and everyone I knew started referring to them as "Botulism World" instead.

I dont live near any chain pizza joints so im forced to use a local one that sucks and the prices are ridiculous. If I want a big pizza its costing me over 20 USD, not even delivered either.

Because most people have no taste (No pun intended). I have local pizza joints every 10 ft around here. Two large for $15.00 delivered with tip and a hell of a lot better than the preprocessed crap.
???

It's all preprocessed.

My love of thin crust. Donatos and then Dominos is a killer.

The weight is reduced big but price isn't.

Donatos can be so good that 1 time I ate a whole large by myself. That is $13

What blows my mind is in the UK, the pizza hut buffet is like ÂŁ5, and it's all the pizza you can eat in about five hours. And yet, order a single pizza there and it's like ÂŁ14. Insane.

Pizza is one the many things that taste so much better making it yourself. It's also much cheaper. If making pizza dough, which is easy BTW, is too intimidating you can purchase pre made pizza dough at independent pizzerias pretty cheaply.

I still like Pizza Hut pan pizza provided I can find a location that isn't a complete dump (more difficult that you think). For me the most important part is the sauce, and PH's sauce is just the right balance of tomato-ish and spicy.

Dominoes hand-tossed is decent, but their thin crust is absolutely disgusting. Its like putting cheese and sauce on a saltine cracker.

So true. Those pizza delivery guys basically need the tips to make doing the job worthwhile. If you aren't going to tip go and get the pizza yourself.

I haven't ordered out a pizza in years, though. Homemade whole wheat crust and the ability to choose from a variety of toppings that would make even a Californian pizza aficionado blush at will from my local market has caused irreparable damage to my ability to order pizza in good conscience.

Freschetta pizza.

I've been loving this brand of frozen pizza. They're normally on sale for 6 bucks at Vons (Safeway), and it tastes better then most of the pizza chains.

If you are paying 50 bucks for a large pizza in Japan then you don't know where or how to order a pizza. Just sayin.

I feel compelled to repost this here as perhaps IronGAF is too suspicious of me due to lack of epic pics:

My experiment worked this past Wednesday night, so I shall break it down for IronGAF after something on the cheap/tasty side of things. No pics since I have no camera.

Ever had a craving for some pizza but didn't feel like paying a high price for delivery and dealing with a 45min-1 hour wait? Ever sought excessive vengeance against a pizza place for screwing up an order to an extent it pretty well ruined your dinner? I achieved both of these lofty goals!

All you need is:

Pizza sauce
Cheese
Pepperoni(or some other stuff...you get the idea.

Grab some tinfoil, and a small oven you can peer into and ultimately set to 325(or 350 etc) degrees.

The secret? a Gyro wrap. Instead of pizza crust, get a basic Gyro wrap and use it as the base. 1-2 teaspoons of pizza sauce, arrange thy cheese and toppings, put it on the foil and pop it into the little oven. Once you see any cheese bubbling, which is somewhere in the neighboorhood of LESS THAN 5 minutes, turn it off and you're done. Eat that one, then pop another in, and repeat. Odds are, 2-3 will do the trick for a dinner/hungry portion and just 1 will suffice for lunch. Damn cheap grocery wise and not a lot of time or checking on it required.

I'm going to go forth on this and sample a variety of pepperoni and cheese stylings that I generally can't get around here among the usual suspects, not to mention better quality natural cheese and such to make it a tad healthier. The gyro really gives it a unique style and flavor respective to the usual doughy pizzas out there.

I highly recommend giving this a shot should the situation present itself to ya. Outside of an incredible craving, new nifty place, or a speciality pizza adventure with friends, I can't reckon paying for pizza delivery going forward---this just flat out works so well at satisfying the craving.

OP should seriously give this route a shot as well as anybody else feeling like experimenting off the beaten path.

Until you've had either A) Monical's pizza or B) Papa Del's pizza, you have not lived. Fuck Chicago pizza, Monical's/Papa Del's are the places to be.

Point being, delivery sucks. I just drive across town to either of these fine establishments and bring it home. It's worth the trip. Find a place near you that's so damn good it makes it worthwhile to drive and get it yourself.

Prices shot up in 2004-2008 because cheese and flour got rapidly more expensive. Part of it had to do with oil.

I think prices of ingredients have dropped significantly, but as the saying goes "up like a rocket, down like a feather".

speculawyer said:

I think they are better than most chains. They don't have that bland, and excessively salty taste that Papa Johns, Dominos, and Pizza Hut have. But even their prices have risen. Papa Murphey's used to sell delites for $6, and regulars for $8. You could get 2 family larges sometimes for $12. Now it's $9, $10, and $16-18 respectively.

Well a decent sized pizza (for 2+ people) delivered will usually end up costing around 3,000 Yen or more, which is completely ridiculous for anyone from North America.

"Americanized Pizza" is pretty crappy in Japan. It is expensive and not very good. Sure the wacky toppings (tuna fish, corn, potatos, squid, mini-hamburgers / hot dogs, etc...) are entertaining at first, but it sucks if you just want a big pepperoni pizza.

There are lots of good Italian restaurants with good "real Pizza", but this country is no good in general for delivery "Americanized Pizza".

Yeah pizzas are too pricy. I ordered a pizza a month ago with 4 topping large from Papa Johns. I swear I got charged 30 dollars. Shouldn't be over 15 dollars tops.

East of Chicago has carry out (1 topping) for 7.99. Each additional topping is a buck. So, a large three topping pizza can cost you 9.99 and be ready in 15 minutes (not the 30-40 you need to wait for delivery).
