Dark Souls |OT2| Praise the Sun!

Wow, I just returned to Darkroot Basin a while after I thought I was finished there.
I found a new crystal golem on the lake that released an NPC when I defeated it. After going to human form to summon her, she was a merchant with a bunch of unique sorcery spells like Cast Light and Camouflage, but the best thing she had was a new catalyst. It has lower INT scaling but a much higher base magic stat, so all my spells are now dramatically more powerful. It's 1.5lbs lighter, too.

That's one of the great things about this game - The knowledge you gain by playing is infinitely more useful to your progression than the levels.
mmm, so true. I mean, I know it isn't breaking new ground to say this, as this was very true in Demon's Souls too (but I never understood it), but dying really becomes such a nonissue. Oh, I just lost a bunch of souls and humanity? Whatever, I learnt heaps.

I'll try this for a new page: I read that you can kill some double headed snake monsters in Darkroot Garden. Is that the 'easy' version of the garden before the
butterfly-esque
boss or the harder version that is up the
Hydra
ladder/behind the crescent lock.

This goes back to a question I asked... So what's a good item to start building up to replace it? Or if you're so inclined, at what point?

Any basic weapon that you can upgrade and which scales with your primary stats, really. The Drake Sword is a bit of a one-trick pony: as soon as you can overcome its base 200 damage with some combination of upgrades and stat scaling it's done. Other options would be Astora's Straight Sword, which can be upgraded with somewhat-rare-but-more-common-than-Dragon-Scales Twinkling Titanite and which deals half of its damage as Magic damage and scales with three stats, or the Bandit Knife which has a crazy backstab multiplier and deals the easily overlooked but oh-so-delightful Bleed damage.

If you're still using the Drake Sword when you get it, the lightning spear is almost as big of a boost.

I suppose it would be, but by the time I got the Lightning Spear the Drake Sword had been in retirement for around 10 hours.

The weirdest part of the whole game for me so far is killing the red dragon
with one wood arrow to the head, for 10,000 souls. Plus there's this tiny area unlocked with 3 non-violent maniacs, a bonfire (near two other bonfires for some reason), a gate to Undead Parish (which saves like 20 seconds at most) and nothing else! It's sort of a shortcut too I guess.
I thought I heard a sound effect, but couldn't tell what it was.

It would make sense that the red dragon turns into
the burned up skeleton dragon in the valley of the drakes, but he was there before I killed the red dragon.

Any theories? There are some weird-ass shortcuts in this game, which is awesome. Very Metroidvania.

Man, I'm flying high after what I think was some great progress made this weekend. FINALLY beat that bastard Capra Demon, and then proceeded to roll through the Hydra, Havel the Rock, Gaping Dragon (beat him the first time!), Moonlight Butterfly, and a whole crap ton of other stuff.

But, got a question for folks. Like probably everyone else in the beginning, I've been rocking the Drake Sword. Now, though, and again just like everyone else, it's time for me to cut the cord and try someone else out. I'm a thief class, but have mainly been leveling up my Vitality, Strength and Dexterity. Any suggestions for good weapons? I've got a ton of Titanite and other stones to upgrade with (haven't used any of them yet). Any advice?

That's been the best moment of the game so far. It was such a struggle to get up to the bells, then getting to sit up there for as long as you like, looking down at all the places you've fought through the last 7-8 hours.

Love this game.

Did you have to do that while online?

Don't know if anyone else answered this but yes, I had to be online and get summoned while wearing the covenant ring. Its random who you'll invade tho, one of them times i went 1v2 against 2 clearly high lvl japanese players. Got 1 shotted lol

Suggestions on where to go next? I've rung both bells and finished
the Undead Asylum Part 2
. I tried to go into
The Great Hollow
but decided it was best saved for after I can
warp between Fire Keepers
. Tried
Sen's Fortress
but I have no ranged and the lightning guy is wrecking me. So my choices are
Demon Ruins, Catacombs, New Londo Ruins, or keep trying at Sen's Fortress. Guess I could do Darkroot too, no idea what's there other than a Hydra and a boss near the 20k door that I haven't yet attempted.
Am I missing something? What's most appropriate at this point? I'm a 40ish SL knight.

I also feel weird because I'm still using a weapon I found a long ass time ago, a Halberd+10. Seems like I should have found a better weapon by now. I got the Greataxe from
Gaping Dragon
but nowhere near the required strength to use it. Also don't have any of the embers required to put elemental damage on my weapons, so that might be nice too.

Hmm... I've got both. And I'm pretty sure there's a sure-fire way to farm those Twinklings as well as I've gotten two I believe. So at what value of stats str/dex/??? or whatever combination would an item scale beyond the Drake Sword?

Alright, the Great Wolf is impossible.

#1) I heard you could
spare his life and get his sweet lookin sword, but I didn't know what I needed to do to accomplish that. I unknowingly ruined this opportunity by telling that Cheshire cat "no" and then could not join the covenant.

#2) I spent 3 humanity reverse hollowing so I could try to summon someone to help fight the wolf, but no one was ever there. While doing this, I was invaded twice. I managed to kill both of them, but I need help, not another enemy.

I told him no at first too. If you absolve your sins you should be able to join again

You might want to consider the Iaito. Lower base damage than Drake Sword, but really fast attacks, scales well with Dexterity, and deals Bleed damage. I had a somewhat similar build to yours, with a Dexterity focus, and it's what ultimately replaced the Drake Sword for me.

Ugh where the he'll is the bonfire in
Sen's Fortress
? I've found the boss door and I've manage to navigate around all of the
traps and I killed the guy throwing firebombs
. I'm down to 2 estus flasks and I'm terrified.

Edit. Never mind I found. Thank god!

Um. Y'know that "Basement Key" that opens the door by the
red dragon
and leads to the "Depths"? Where did I get that? Suddenly it was in my inventory and I don't remember where I got it from.

What are some good weapons for someone aiming for a dex build?

I'm lvl 37, started as a Thief - but I've been using the Drake Sword for awhile now. Getting bored of it. I have the Wing Spear upgrade to +6, but the Drake still takes the cake in most situations.

I've finished the Undead Parish, Depths, Butterfly - looking at venturing into Blight Town next.

I believe it was on the 3rd rooftop from when you exit Sen's Fortress, you should see the destroyed wall and if you look down from there you should see it.

Edit: bah

The master key does not work for the door in the forest right? :P boutto spend 20k

Master Key doesn't open that door, but you can re-earn your investment far faster than I think is right. Sort of redilcious IMO. Kinda wish I never bought that key -- too tempting to go there whenever I need some souls, feels cheap.

Yeah I love that weapon. Nice timing on getting it as well since the bleed damage is coming in handy at Sen's Fortress against the
Lizardmen
. :>

haha no you have to spend the 20k

I just opened that up a little bit earlier. The farming method is so cheap, and you will get the 20k back literally just standing in one place. I really wish I didn't know about this. I hope From is proactive about patching shit like this, but I can't say I didn't use it to upgrade some of my armor.

Okay, just made it to Anor Londo and this place is kicking my ass.

I could handle the
metal giants
,
gargoyles
both big and small, but now I see that
Black Knights
are the most common mob here? I'm fucked.
sort of loving it :X.

I think I'm taking this place too lightly and having too much fun sparring with the mobs, I died over 5 times in a row. I'm gonna have to use my reverse hollowing so that death is not an option. Plus I want some sweet drops.

Hmm? Care to explain?

edit: nvm, you're talking about tricking the ghost to fall off right?

There's a way around if you don't want to spend the souls.

Take the forest path to the lake, roll past the waterfalls, and up the ladder.

Man I LOVE helping people with the
Capra
demon.

EDITED FOR...

The best part is that every person I have helped with it so far has sent me a thank you message and a friend request. xD

That fight...man.

Rofl. Can't say it doesn't appeal to me anyway. Weird stuff like this is all part of the package for me.

What I really want is the ring that lets you do cartwheels, and I don't know where to start :P

I don't really know the exact formula for the scaling, my testing of damage outputs consisted of equipping the Drake Sword in one right hand slot, the weapon it was competing with in the other, and hitting the same enemy with them. When not-Drake Sword did more damage it was time to put the ol' severed tail out to pasture.

I should point out that I pumped Dexterity hard and fast, and it seems like weapons that scale well with Dexterity are rather common compared to weapons that scale well with other stats in the early game, so the tipping point for the Drake Sword getting overshadowed might have come earlier for me than it did for most people.

i wish i could play right now :(

is it possible to learn all schools of magic on your first playthrough, or is there any downside? i went with miracles but haven't bought a spell yet.

Whynot? My thief carries a catalyst, a talisman, and a pyromancer's flame. I normally use fireball, heavy soul arrow, magic weapon, and heal.

You probably won't amaze anyone with your magic ability, but if you use it in a support role for certain situations, it'll work to your advantage.

Okay so my weapon is starting to break, but I haven't even gotton to a part where i can repair. Uhhh help?

Uh, there's a repair guy at the bottom of the initial shrine in firelink. Take the stairs to the elevator, go down the stairs and head to the right.

Alright, I'm sick of the Depths, where's the shortcut that I've seen mentioned a few times?

fucking piece of shit basilisks, I'm fucking stuck with curse until I can get all the way back to the gargoyle tower, are you joking FROM?

Keep trying Sen's Fortress.

Meh, ok. How many shots does it take to kill the mage lizards with a bow or crossbow? I guess I need to find a vendor and stock up on like 1,000 arrows or bolts because I have a feeling I'm going to be dying a lot there. I haven't really had a need for ranged this entire game so I don't know if I even have a bow or crossbow in my inventory :(

I think I found my calling. Helped 4 people beat
Vagina Face
in an hour. Got 12.5k souls and 1 Humanity each time. Feels good man, also this is my self administered penance for murdering soul farmers in the forest for my ring.

On a side note, I always got some souls and a upgrade stone after killing someone in PVP. Does anyone know if they actually dropped it? Or is a duplicate?

You will likely get destroyed in the other places. as said, keep trying Sen's Fortress. The Serpent mage is not bad, sure you take damage if you block it, but up close the mage is helpless aisde of physical attack which is easily manageable.

Grab a spear and poke em, or use fire spells. Combustion and firebombs will 1 shot the basillisk, easy way to farm em actually

The lizard guys are weak to fire and lightning, I couldn't imagine fighting those bastards without my pyroancy!

What are these covenants you guys keep talking about? I'm 24 hours in and haven't seen anything like that...

Killed the nightmare inducing boss in the depths though. Also, the
butchers didn't drop a sack and they don't respawn. Glitch, or shitty feature?

Has anyone joined (covenant spoiler) -->
Gravelord Servants?
Just wondering if it increased your PvP likelihood at all. I really want to fight people.

Wait wait wait, what's this?

Doesn't that covenant have something to do with the ring I must have?

Wish the wiki happened to be totally complete just every once in a while for stuff like this :P

i'm done with the depths. would you guys recommend going straight to blighttown or go somewhere else? my equipment is still very basic with upgraded starting gear and a hand axe+5 btw.

Hm, am I the only person WHO DID NOT run into any basilisks in the Depths? I ran through that entire place, killed the giant rat, killed that devious little Soul Arrow enemy guy, and thE Gaping Dragon. But, I never ran into a single basilisk...

Also, for the Gaping Dragon, decided to try summoning a player to help for the very first time so far in my playthrough...only to watch him basically get his butt kicked almost instantly while I dodged, ran, borked his tail and eventually killed him. Needless to say, it was pretty funny.

I think it more like a reward.

Wow I think I'm being farmed in
Darkroot garden (after joining the forest hunter covenant.) I keep invading and being killed by the same 3 guys.
These guys are insanely stronger than me weapon/armor/ability wise. :3
