I need me a break from this game. I've got a good 35 hours invested into it, only played for a little bit today. Need some rest, haha.

I think I might pick up Batman next week, that way I can play something that makes me feel like a badass. It's not that I don't like the feeling this game gives, it's just after a while you need something different.

Play Dark Souls if you want to be a badass. Play Batman Arkham City if you want the game to tell you are a badass.

EDIT: Did the strategy guide come out yet? I want to know exactly what stats like STR and DEX do.

Everytime I enter this thread I feel so far behind :(
Makes me wish I had more time to play this amazing game, either that or I'm REALLY taking it slow

Edit: Lol Riposte, you nailed it.

Wow. Made it to Minotaur Boss and was promptly smashed. I made it back to him, was able to sprint and snatch up my souls, run away up a ladder to a roof and said hmm, lemme try something. i did a drop attack on him and was like okay, rinse and repeat, so i went up ladder again except this time, the big guy decided to jump all the way up there too. i said ohshitohshitohshit and teleported my ass back to a bonfire.

this game is crazy. and also, that fucking Dark Knight or whatever he is--he has his back turned to you down some steps--my wrath is coming for that fucker tonight.

Edit: On framerate issues, I did notice that turning off the HUD definitely makes it smoother but who can afford to turn off everything? I wish you can choose which elements to keep--like targeting reticule and lifebar only.

Haha, are you serious? I wonder why the HUD of all things would strain the game.

Haha. I know what you mean, but I think there's merit in both kinds of games, especially since they both seem to be games doing what they're doing the best.

The strategy guide has been out since the game came out. The two stats just are for requirements to use weapons and damage scaling on weapons that scale in power with those stats. That's it.

They don't but according to what people are saying thunder weapons are so good that the lack of scaling is irrelevant. Apparently it takes like 50-60 dexterity for the Iaito +15 to outperform the Thunder Iaito +5. In other words, both are good but Thunder is probably your best bet.
Does the thunder upgrade take away its bleed damage though?

Anyway, blasted through Blighttown today. The boss wasn't too difficult, just took awhile. Also ran around in the Demon Ruins a bit and snagged that Golden Hemmed set, which is amazing. Should I try to kill the boss in there, or go somewhere else?

There's also infinite invincibility by endlessly casting Strong Magic Shield.

There's not a lot of point to playing dedicated PvP at the moment, there's an endless throng of glitched players just hanging out and annihilating all comers. The Soul Level restrictions on regular invasions keeps that aspect of it comparatively sane, but the PvP covenants without level limits are ridonkulous.

On top of that, for better or for worse, the Humanity system makes it so that there is not a tremendous lot of incentive to even be in human form. Sure, you'll go human for a bit for summoning on certain trouble spots, but given the many flaws of the PvP metagame at this point (glitches, Fog Ring Invincibility users everywhere, level restrictions dropping out at certain areas, etc), most will probably just run around in undead form until they really need it. Unlike Demon's Souls, there is no penalty in undead form to really incentivize human play and since you don't get humanity with defeated bosses, you usually have to go out of your way to get humanity points if you're in need of it.

FYI The Dark Souls Futurepress guide is temporarily out of stock on Amazon but is listed at $13.77. I ordered one even though I'll probably be done with the game by the time its delivered.

For people considering doing some co-op and who weren't aware, you don't lose any souls or humanity if you get summoned and die. You pretty much only stand to gain. Plus it feelsgoodman. If you're in human form you also don't lose that (yes you can put down a summon sign in human form now). :P

And I hear all of the best weapons in the game shit all over damaging scaled weapons(also faith and int scaled weapons ending up being better). What a fuck-up.

Well, I made the
True Greatsword of Artorias
, badass looking sword, but I need 20 Faith and 20 Intellect, dammit. I don't think I'll be using it for a while, if at all on this playthrough. That's 18 points that I would rather put elsewhere.

They're better to start, but I think once you start seeing people with say a massive Dex stat, it'll overtake them.

What constitutes as massive?

I have close to 40 Dex and right now it seems that the Lightning Spear, when you add the regular and lightning damage together, outperforms my +10 sword by about 60 damage.

So... I guess a lot. Especially considering that spear can be upgraded to +5.

I have a lot of different kinds of titanite, but I have no idea how to use them. I'm about to go into Sen's Fortress and wanted to potentially level up a weapon(using Drake sword still) but I don't see how to use anything than what comes up at the blacksmith at the church. Do I just have to find weapons that require different kinds of titanite?

I am sitting at 42 DEX at the moment.

Lightning Spear should haven't any DEX mods.

What does the Covenant System actually do? I searched but haven't found info on this matter...

I absolutely loathed PvP in Demon's Souls and I don't want it in Dark Souls either. Can any covenant help avoid PvP or something? Being hollow sucks a lot :(

It doesn't. But at around that point unless you have a +15 weapon with that kind of Dex even then I think the Lightning Spear might outperform it.

Well, for a frame of reference, a lot of the PvP builds in Demon's Souls only required like 50 in their respective stat build types for optimal damage. But in that one, almost every weapon scaled to something. The question is whether or not people are going to pump up to the 60+ needed for decent damage with scaling weapons.

It's called the play offline covenant.

You get it from the carebear mob that appears if you stand perfectly still after falling into the abyss for 1 minute.

I went with a Dex-heavy build too and I'm pretty sure the best option for one is
Quelaag's Furysword
, but the only reason that can compete with Lightning weapons is that it scales with Humanity as well as Dexterity, and that's where most of the real damage comes from. The Dex scaling is really just a bonus, and sans Humanity it's nothing special.

The Lightning weapons are a bit overpowered, all told, is what I'm saying.

Question.

I have a Black Separation Crystal(banish phantom/return home). I would love to use it right now, but I need to know something about it before I do. I have traversed the white light, and can't go back through it. I feel something big is about to happen, so I wan't to teleport back to my last bonfire and upgrade considering the amount of souls I have and fight a few of the tougher enemies I ran from...but I have never used this Crystal before.

Can I get back to my bonfire with souls in tact considering I've crossed the white light?

Oh, I thought you were naming an example that shows STR/DEX scaled weapons weren't easily outperformed.

I'm on my way to the blacksmith to make that. Just gotta get through that level...

Finally got the game, maybe I'll just create a character later and play it a little bit tomorrow...then full immersion over the weekend.
There's no install option on ps3? Weird.

oh yes. there's no question turning off the HUD makes things smoother. Not great by any stretch but there is slight improvement.

Black Separation Crystal sends friendly ghosts you've summoned back to their own world or returns you to your own world if you've gone into someone's game as a friendly ghost. It can't teleport you back to a bonfire.

It's a nice weapon, but get used to having your attack power cut in half until you get back to your bloodstain when you die.

You'll probably want a nice Lightning weapon to switch to when that happens.

Shit...as I was reading this, I ran into a big ass bull demon thing and got MURDERED. Scared the daylights out of me!

I don't want any weapons that scale with humanity. This game already has enough stressful elements, I don't want to willfully add a few more to the pile.

THANK FUCK
Godamn i must have died thirty times to that bastard wolf. melee is such a pain in the ass with him, well eat my sword of nito you bastard!

I have a feeling that Int based builds with Enchanted weapons might dominate the metagame, but that's just a hunch. We haven't seen many people at crazy high soul levels yet.

Riposte said:
Not like it will effect me one way or another. I am already invested in a shield-less, ranged-less finesse weapon build.
You are a good man. I gave up on the range-less and started using the long bow I found.
