Dark Souls PC 1080p. Confirmed, like, for real.

So what's the general feeling with PC gamers who've never played the Souls games? How's the word being put out to them?

Glad to hear this, we would have gotten this anyway through a mod of some kind no doubt, but great to hear. Now we need no GFWL, because again I can see the 30fps lock being modded at some point, whereas GFWL needs to be dealt with now.

RockPaperShotgun, Steam's homepage, PC gamer, maybe Total Biscuit? The PC audience is so consolidated I don't think it'll require a ton of marketing. It'd be great if it was just on shelves.

Hard to say. I thought the game could eventually do more than fine on word of mouth alone, but they apparently worked hard to surround this port with the worst possible reputation before launch.

While I originally expected sales to top by far those 90 thousands signing the petition (my guess: roughly half million sales in the first month) now I'm wondering if sales will even barely match the number of signatures.

If the port is good enough, I hope good word of mouth follows launch. If so and it sells well, it'll probably be a long-tail game. I just hope FromSoftware and Namco can recognize that.

Half a million wut

Yaah, half a million. What's your problem with it? It isn't really an impossible number on PC these days.

Half a million first month on PC is a mega impressive number, very few games do that. Like, Blizzard and Bethesda only (maybe Valve too). Maybe Civ.

And for Dark Souls to do that? A game which has sold...1.2ish million copies in almost a year? That's exceedingly optimistic, no matter how well the game will fit with the pc fanbase.

I can see it reaching that number after many steam sales though.

The Witcher 2 pulled half a million in its first week, iirc.

I don't think its possible for dark souls, at all, but eh. I do think it'll do numbers to the point that the next one will be a simultaneous launch, though. 100~200k.

Yeah, half a million seems high. I know there's a lot of enthusiasm and it seems like a good fit for the PC audience, but it's also been out on consoles for most of a year and a lot of people probably already picked it up there. And I don't expect double-dippers to be a significant portion of the sales, especially since the extra content is coming to consoles.

Good to see that everything I expected to be a misunderstanding/overreaction actually was -- check out the original thread for a laugh. Looking forward to playing the game with great IQ at 120 FPS.

That is still the biggest problem here.
No, not at all. Locked resolution or framerate would have reduced the actual in-game advantage of the PC version. GFWL is a minor inconvenience at most.

A friend of mine who is a PC-only gamer is pretty hyped. He always referred to Demon's Souls as the only reason he would ever want a console.

Saw this posted this on another forum:

Guy is legit I believe, judging by his posts in the original Whirlpool Demon's Souls thread.
The CPU on the system is a i7 930 @2.8gh and vid card was ATI 5700 series (not sure which one). A pretty average to low end system by today's standards. There we some frame rate issues but you tend to notice these when the game drops below 60fps.
My concerns about hearing about a choppy framerate on a GTX680 have been put to rest.

Time to double dip.

GFWL is a horrendous game-breaking experience at the most when it deletes your save files (does it still do that?).

Not saying that resolution and framerate are less important, but GFWL can cause huge issues for people.

Here's a newer post by the same NamcoBandaiAU guy:

Guys I can only give feedback on the build I have and whle that interview states it has problems, when I played it the game was silky smooth in most areas. I'll test it on a faster machine this week and let you know how it goes. I'll also run fraps on it to check rates.

Nice to hear about the performance stuff but I'd prefer it to be delayed to remove GFWL and release alongside the console versions/DLC. Console Souls fans would be happier too I think.

This release would be worth it for a fix in the one area that had the single digit framerate issues alone. So stoked for this.

Sweet, I'll get this.

Hopefully quick saves can me patched in.

Damn PC gamers are terrible

The biggest mechanical change I'd like would be to make every bonfire warpable, not only those near covenants. Would eliminate a lot of the pointless back and forth travelling.

Also design some of the encounters better (hello bs archers on a small ledge) - the game's hitboxing/collision detection (including walkable areas) isn't good enough to support that shit.

I don't think people should worry about quicksave/load. It's not something From will put into the game, and it's also not something that can just be modded/hacked into it.

Uh, no.
Some of these games sold MILLIONS in the first days, not half a million in the first month.
Half a million is what can you expect from some solid but not exceedingly famous game, like The Witcher 2, which is exactly where I would put a decent port of Dark Souls in popularity.

We are talking about a game interesting enough to convince almost 100,000 peple to sign a petition for a port, and these kind of petitions usually barely reach a fraction of the actual, potential user base.

lol you would think some dev or media would have a better rig instead of just 5000 series GPU's. It's nice to read it running well on low-mid range GPU's but I want to read about better rigs here :p

100,000?

I thought it was 10,000

Try to name me one game that's sold that well after a years release that was ported to the PC that did 500k numbers in a months time.

I frankly can't think of any, many games have come and never sold so well. Guys if your coming one year after, good luck.

Do we have numbers on Alan Wake? That seemed to be very successful, though I don't know if it cracked 500k.

Now I'll have to agree with the purists here and say that it would break the game. It already technically quicksaves after almost everything you do. It just doesn't save your position in the world, only your items. The whole rotten form reclaim souls mechanic would disappear.

Quicksaves would make 0 sense for the game, you can already save anywhere, and there are no bosses that take you like more than 2 or 3 minutes to get to from a bonfire. The point of save all the time is to make everything you do count, like, you know, killing NPCs.

Who cares when it came out on consoles? It's a popular genre on PC, and not an overcrowded one, too.
Those concerned about "double dipping" seem to ignore that the largest chunk of customers is made out of people who never played the game on console.

What I can do, on the other hand, is listing a bunch of titles with LESS appeal than Dark Souls that sold roughly that much, if not more: Terraria, Amnesia, Risen II, Divinity II.

Anyway, that's a pointless argument right now.
It's a GFWL title, and those are never particularly successful.Even when they are "AAA+ wake up and run to buy it" like GTA IV and Batman they barely reach decent numbers.
