Dark Souls PC 1080p. Confirmed, like, for real.

Quicksaves would make 0 sense for the game, you can already save anywhere, and there are no bosses that take you like more than 2 or 3 minutes to get to from a bonfire. The point of save all the time is to make everything you do count, like, you know, killing NPCs.

The game already has built in quicksave. You dont even have to hit a button. You turn off the game, you automatically start right where you left off.

I don't get it. Why is this news? Are there actually PC games limited to 720p nowadays..?
Someone mentioned the Sonic Episodes but I can't think of a single 3D game in the last ~10 years that doesn't allow resolution switches. The big worry was a 30 FPS lock and it looks like you can override said lock in this game.

The resolution thing was sorted out a while ago so the thread title isn't news.

All of the confusion can be chalked up to a developer that isn't used to working on PC games + translation issues.

"Get ready for some bad news Dark Souls fans. Yes, the game is coming to the PC and that’s what most of us have been asking all this time. And although some of you misunderstood From Software’s statement about the ’720p resolution’ restriction, we are happy to report that the game supports resolutions up to 1080p. As we said back when that information got out, From Software was obviously talking about the game’s assets resolution and nothing more.

However, PC gamers will not enjoy an ideal and smoothly gaming experience as the game has major framerate issues. In fact, the E3 PC demo was really choppy. What’s really disappointing here is that Namco has been using an Nvidia 6xx series card for their demonstration. According to its Facebook page, Namco is featuring its new EON11-S and its High-Performance Desktops will be running NAMCOBANDAI Games’ highly anticipated games, Star Trek and Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition for PC. These PC configurations are equipped with a GTX 6xx series card, so get ready everyone for really awful performance when this game comes out.

Last but not least, the E3 build of Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition featured a frame rate setting, which was set to 30 fps, a Window/Fullscreen mode and an Anti-Aliasing Option (with On and Off settings)."

I can run BF3 on medium high settings on my old phenom x3 720 @ 3.5ghz, and an hd4890 @ 1920x1200 at around 30 fps. This is fucking like 5 year old hardware.

You're telling me, this game which can run on older hardware than the shit I have now at sub 30fps most of the time, is going to run sub 30 fps most of the time on a computer that's less than 6 months old?

No, fuck your shit namco. Go take another year, come back with some better optimizations, some actual graphical options, and get back to us then. PC Gamers like myself can wait, we aren't going to suddenly disappear. I'd rather wait longer and get a good product than this shit fed to us for $60.

Why are you quoting old, unconfirmed stuff that goes directly against newer information readily available in this thread? Do you feel a burning need to vent some outrage?

I just read the "newer" information and I'm not going to believe some poster on some random Australian forum by a poster named in relation to namco.

It's just hearsay. It also doesn't touch base upon the one area that people who've played the game complain about in terms of fps issues.

Also the "free mousepad and mouse with your purchase from EB" is hilarious.

Also I'm going to be put off if it's letterboxed or only lets you display at 1080p. Come on, that shit's lazy.

Unlike Neogaf, its very easy to change your username on Whirlpool in the control panel with two or 3 clicks, so i would take that post with a grain of salf.

By the way I'm a member there so i know.

Yeah. Anything else would be violating the game's design, the point is that there's a real risk to your actions, and a quick save you can quickly reload from will be completely destroying this, nevermind the potential problems for online play.

I can deal with letterboxed, not unless 4:3 IS supported on consoles (don't believe so), but I can't imagine any game actually displaying only at 1080p.

When has anyone allowed quicksaving when you play the game online?

I'm not interested in playing the game online.

So since this is coming to PC, and there's still a mystery behind the pendant that can be traded to Snuggly for a Souvenir of Reprisal (in regards to it possibly having some affect on the story), is there any chance that somebody could take a peek through all the files and figure this out quickly after release?

Just throwing it out there in case you're the person who could do this and figure it out--I really have wanted to tackle this on Pop Fiction, but without confirmation one way or the other, it would be a dead end. Doesn't seem like the developers will spill the beans anytime soon. Seems like being able to inspect the game files thoroughly, especially the text files, would solve this mystery.

For better or worse the game's generally designed with the assumption you are, IE no pausing and saves always work the same way. I expect we'll see the same thing here, though online MAY be mandatory anyway without mods/hacks to shut off Live.

Online isn't mandatory in the console game, and I can't see the devs putting in the effort to stave off mods and hacks.

Game already has quicksave as already pointed out. What people really want are multiple saves, which is dumb.

Thing is you generally have to be able to log into your Live account to access saves and all, not unless you can log into the account itself without going online now... Actually, I think that was possible with GTAIV if you didn't update to the latest version, so maybe it IS possible.

Multiple saves is never dumb I hate games without it because if i wanna do another play through i have to lose my old one :/

You get multiple character slots, so you still have that purpose fulfilled. Though this game is odd anyway in that you're immediately booted back to the start upon beating it, but with the difficulty knocked up.

me too - and you can't change your post count and pretty sure you can't have aliases. and fwiw he was also in the Demon's Souls thread when the AU BP version was released and soldout in a few days - gave us some pretty legit sounding info that wouldn't have been publicly available at the time

The pendant helps accentuate the backstory the main character, and that you're actually the Pigmy. It can also be used when speaking to one of the bosses sister in the church.

Do we have numbers on Alan Wake? That seemed to be very successful, though I don't know if it cracked 500k.

Yeah it appears that Alan Wake sold about half a million on PC on the first month. We don't know exactly how much it sold but we this is what we do know:

As of December 2011 Alan Wake sold between 1.4 and 1.5 million copies.

As of March 2012, 4 months after that last article and 1 month after the PC release the game was at 2 million copies sold across the 360 and PC.

Of course we don't know the sales break down of those half a million copies but it's fairly reasonable to assume that most of them were on PC.

TBH I've heard of alan wake but last I checked there wasn't a demo, and I'm through buying games even at a 30 price point unless there's a demo.

I'm not the only one who feels this way, so that's a ton of potential lost sales there.

It was about $15 on Gamestop download (Steamworks) a few weeks ago.

That's $14 too much. Outside of HiB, I don't buy games if they don't have a demo. And if a friend doesn't have a copy I can fart with at his place, then that too.

Fuck me, offical thread should be titled "Dark Souls PC: I hope it's not Dark Souls and only costs a dollar". Doubting the whirlpool stuff because "I'm a member", without bothering to do a shred of research is nice. Hey would you believe it - I'm a member too! Only I both did my research and stated my assumptions in my post.

On top of which you have this quote linked a few posts back:

Saguchi suggests that the severity of the port problems will vary depending on the power of the player’s machine. “While the game hasn’t been tweaked itself, because it’s very difficult to tweak, but for people who play on the PC, which is arguably a lot more stronger format to work off of, it does improve the framerate issues,” he said.

And people still believe in the mythical 30fps cap? Next we'll have someone claiming it runs in 4:3, requires a VooDoo 3D and only plays with a trackball. Over RS-232.

There's no mystery behind the pendant. You don't need the PC version to come out to dig into the files and confirm that; we've had complete dumps of every single text string in the game from the console versions for months.

The whole pendant thing was just a bizarre flight of fancy to begin with.

Damn, makes me kinda wish a physical version would come here, even though I'd never actually use the mouse with Dark Souls anyway... and might be better as a backup than a primary mouse anyway. Well, a new mouse pad would be nice.

oh look it's just been listed on EB Games and comes with a mouse + mousepad:
http://ebgames.com.au/pc-157565-Dark-Souls-Prepare-to-Die-Edition-PC

corroborating evidence or was it just a lucky guess by that guy with the 'fake' whirlpool id?
Dont worry though, theres enough time for namco to remove stuff from the pc version so it just comes in a flimsy plastic box and a piece of toilet paper known as the instruction manual.

based on what happened to the console versions.

Kind of odd to include a mouse when they've said kb/m support will be bare minimum.
Maybe Japanese devs are putting a quality effort into this game but they have no idea how to convey any sort of competence in PC porting so they keep digging holes with poorly made statements.

August will sure be interesting.

I wonder if this means the digital copy won't e 60 dollars. In an ideal world, one would figure "no, of course not!" but this is Namco we're talkin' about here.

Personally, I think $40 is an appropriate price point for a year old port with additional content. I have a feeling that they'll sell it for $50, though. $60 would be a disappointing but not completely surprising.

I can't think of many GotY editions that actually debuted at $60 rather than $50. Definitely expecting $40 or $50 in this case, especially with the game already going for $30 at some places.
Is that the official price or just an assumption on EB's part? Also, how do Australian game prices compare to American?
They're almost universally double the price, or so it seems to me.

Well, Gamestop's preorder price for the game at the moment is $39.95. Not sure if that will be the actual price in the end though.

voice chat for pc version?

At Namco's E3 conference, I remember during the interview with the producer, he said that there will be an item included that allows voice chat. A youtube video of if should be around somewhere hopefully.

This is another thing I hope they fix. Come on, I'm gonna be sitting arms length away from my monitor, I hope there's some sort of UI scaling

I was in this camp before the game was released. Thought the UI was monstrously big, but honestly you get used to it. It's not a problem for me at all. Scaling would be a nice option though - I'd make it a tad bit smaller - but I wouldn't hold your breath.

It's not bad when you play it on TV from a distance but up close it may seem a bit much.
