Dark Void Zero thread of 8-BIT capcom glory

Gagaman said:
Really? What an odd thing to make up, right down to mentioning the Playchoice-16 which isn't exactly common video game knowledge.

What made me really want to believe it was the fact that Capcom is pretty good about going back and revitalizing older characters, where most companies would probably just make a new one from scratch. First example that comes to mind is all the original fighting street characters coming back in Alpha years (decades?) later.

If it were true, I bet it was more in line with just a simple demo way back when of a character with a jetpack, and nothing more.

Excuse my ignorance, so Dark Void coming to 360/PS3 is a remake/reboot/reimagining/whatever of this?

If so, wow, I didn't know that.

Nah. The DSi ware version seems to be a 8-bit version of the 360/PS3 version. Except, I think it takes place before the console version. I might be wrong on that.

The DSi version is kind of a marketing joke from Capcom. 'Zero is a "forgotten" prototype NES game that Capcom never completed development on back in the 80's. It was found in Capcom's vault a few years ago and inspired the current "next-gen" Dark Void game. So the NES version was completed and made to run on the DSi.

So yeah, this is all a joke. But the 'zero is completely awesome and well worth the 500 ($5) nintendo points.

I was reading about this on the Capcom blog, had no idea they ported it.

Edit: That was a marketing joke? Well I sir got owned.

Ok, so this is a Mega Man 9/10 situation.

Loving the faux history behind Dark Void Zero :lol

I just used 500 of the 1000pts I got when I first registered my DSi, and so far the game is a lot of fun, and a nice throwback to the 8-bit days.

got to level 2. The first boss was fun.

So far, it is a blast! The controls of the jetpack are really tight, just hovering around everywhere, and shooting down at angles.

Right now I think there might be chance that this game ends up being Airtight's superior product. :lol

it think it's pretty much assured

same thing happened with grin and bionic commando

But this isn't developed by Airtight. It's by Other Ocean Interactive.

i do not think this proves anything, it is only available on a few platforms, i have DSlite not dsi, and i have no iphone. Being a classic it should be availabe on every platform out there.

And this is why I love Capcom. I'm waiting for a few more impressions before I bite, but seeing that DarkVoid icon on my DSi is temping.

I just finished the first level. This is really fun, so far, and surprisingly smooth. I didn't know the levels were Metroidy in design, which is a pleasant surprise. I really like the art in the story sequences, too. I checked the credits at the title screen and thought it funny that there was a credit for "revisionist history."

Also, the Dark Void theme sure is catchy.

Just impulse bought this, and I am very pleased with what I've played. DSiware needs more actiony games.
I don't know anything about the 360 Dark Void. Do you get to play as Rusty? Does he look like this??

I hope so.

I'm really getting a kick out of this game. Especially for just 500 points. I'd really like to see it eventually ported to the consoles as well. I'd double dip.

Be sure to check out the "Help" option. It has the elaborate fake history of the game including pictures of the young Jimmy Fallon and the prototype NES cart.

The game inspired me to whip up my very own Rusty to hang on my fridge.

Now I can wage the ultimate battle in the comfort of my own kitchen.

I finished it. I'm surprised at how short it is, but I can't complain for 500 points. I feel like it's a well-put-together game, and the replay value is quite high for me personally. I intend to start a new game on hard soon.

EDIT: Ugh. I went to "help" in the main menu and it just gave me two white screens. I thought it froze the DSi, since it wouldn't shut off, but after holding the power button for about 10 seconds, it did finally shut off.

Hearing about so "many" bugs... :/ Capcom patch?

Still getting it day one in Euroland.
Bugs? Besides the white screen thing I posted about above, I didn't notice a single bug.

really fun game. especially once you get the hang of the controls. only just beat the first world/level. i suspect it's fairly short. oh well, it was only 500 points.

Gave it my first try yesterday just to see how I liked it. I was rushing it a bit and wasn't doing so well, and stopped playing midway in level 1.

Today I gave it another go, this time I wasn't rushing, and was having a lot more fun. Unfortunately, I got most of the way through level 1 (I had just recieved the location for the portal code) and the game locked up completely out of nowhere. No explosions, nothing out of the ordinary, just jumping up to a platform above me and it froze while the music kept playing. After a minute or two the music stopped and all I could do was turn off my DS. Really disappointing to see something like this happen in a game that won't even let you save mid-level.

My other gripes would be the game is "NES hard" as in, most of the difficulty comes from primitive design styles like:
-you can't crouch and shoot left/right
-enemy respawn seems somewhat unpredictable
-enemies placed where you can't get a good shot angle
-enemies can shoot through some walls that you can't shoot through
-if I understand correctly, you have 3 lives with which to finish the game or you start over from level 1

Overall I like it, except for the lockup thing. Hopefully that's a rare occurrence, because so far that's the only thing making me regret the purchase.

Certain guns you can get can shoot through those walls, too.

And no. If you lose all of your lives, you restart at the beginning of the current level.

Good to know.

Hopefully Capcom will update the game to get rid of the game-ending glitches. If those weren't there, I would gladly recommend the game from what I've played so far.

Is the game not saving for anyone else? I got up to level 2 last night, game over'd, and turned my DSi off. When I went back to it this morning, the game acted as if I never cleared the first level and made me start over.

I noticed that after I beat the game and shut it off, when I turned it back on and chose continue, I was back at the start of level 2 (which was the last place I game overed and continued). I think it might only save if you get a game over.

EDIT: I didn't fully read your message. If you got a game over and it didn't save, it might either require you to actually continue, OR to choose 'quit' from the game menu. I may have done that too.

Yeah, you need to choose quit. I just played through level 1, and immediately after level 2 started I chose quit through the pause menu and the title screen had a continue option added.

Bet you never EVER see Dead Phoenix in this way.

Great to see that Capcom makes 8-bit style games again! :) I hope that this game will also come for PSN.

Wasnt the piracy thread about preserving unreleased games? (I only read the first post in that thread, so if something else was discussed, then i missed that, sorry). Isnt Dark Void Zero a brand new game, only that it is made with 8-bit style graphics and music? Or is it an old game that wasnt released back in the days?

Thus ushering in a pleasantly long lasting trend of companies making NES and SNES-style 8 and 16-bit games that totally kick ass.

and then I woke up.

Thanks guys.
Beat the game on normal earlier today and now replaying it on hard. Such an excellent game.

Yes, it's a brand new game, but Capcom is marketing it as an unreleased old game, which people are taking at face value and believing.

I think >.>

Here's a review.

Sure the game might be a bit on the short side, but given the game's addictive gameplay and fairly high degree of difficulty, it's difficult to complain, especially considering the game will only set you back 500 Nintendo Points. If you're a fan of classic 8-bit action titles and don't mind a slightly elevated level of difficulty, this is definitely a game you'll want to add to your DSiWare collection. And if you're not a fan, this wildly enjoyable title might just make one out of you.

Considering the credits lead off with "Original Game Concept & Revisionist History By"... yes, absolutely.

I only had a few minutes to try this out yesterday, but it was a blast. Great game. How short is it really? Are there a total of three maps, or what?

Yes; three levels.
