I don't see that. That other story is from a special that was recorded a year prior. This joke came right after he said that transgender people have a "tough road ahead" and that they're gangsters. The joke is basically how ridiculous it would be if someone who wasn't transgender just decided to change their gender frivolously like it was a dare.

Now, the story about the person ODing at the gallery show does come off more ignorant, but I do think it's just him being ignorant about that shit.

Bro you don't have to explain the joke to me. It's not that you "get it" and I don't. I just found the rhetoric to be kind of gross and very tone deaf.

His joke about being scared/grossed out by the transgender woman in the meeting was also offputting. Whenever he brought any of that shit up i coulnt wait for him to move on.

It makes me sad from a fan perspective since I like everyone involved, but reality isn't that picture perfect. To add to that I see Dave's point of view.

What's interesting is that Key & Peele probably don't care even though they show respect whenever they're asked about his show.

Rehashed a few joke concepts like the 'why treat me for what i wear' bits, but it was goddamn great standup. 10 years way too long, dude looks like he's been working out with Carrot Top. Hope Dave embraces the spotlight more so we get more content!

Pretty much every single one of his lgbt jokes were trash besides the pace yourself bit. Like no one is saying to never joke about gay people but it has to be funny. Like saying I don't have a problem with gay people seems so out of date to even have to say in 2017 The fact that it took up like 10 minutes in the first one was bad. The rest of it was amazing.

I still can't get over the he rapes but he saves and he saves a lot more than he rapes ugly superhero and the callback to using it for Cosby

Fantastic!

Must admit I went into it a little nervous, was worried Dave didn't still have the magic, but fuck me, I loved it!

Was laughing out loud multiple times, reminded me of the good old days and reminded me how much I missed chapelle.

I thought the gay and trans jokes were pretty tame, and found them and the rape jokes pretty hilarious, but I can understand how some might disagree.

Can't wait for part 3!

It's really great so far, on the Austin bit.

There's a really, really bad joke steal though, he completely ripped off of an Australian comic, Steve Hughes on a joke which was one of his main bits. https://youtu.be/6xxiK6Z4eXs?t=188

Did Chappelle ever catch shit for this? Cause it's one of the most blatant joke steals I've seen in a while.

Ugh...leave the accusations of joke theft to people who actually understand writing comedy.

It's not that one is better, just baffled about the amount of $$$ netflix is throwing around ("just for comedians").
Well, Netflix is trying to aggressively corner a market that was dominated by HBO for the longest time. Most major comedy specials used to be broadcast by HBO like Robin Williams, Pete Holmes, and George Carlin's. Some were broadcast by Comedy Central as well, but nowadays everyone has premiered a major special on Netflix.

The reason Netflix is spending what they are now is because they need to expand their catalog now that they've become an actual competitor and film and TV production. That's why networks are moving shows & television to places like Hulu or Amazon, that aren't competitive with them on the same level as Netflix is now. Once Amazon gets its House of Cards moment, you can bet the studios will want to move their stuff out or Amazon will have to pay more to keep those films. Back to Netflix, Netflix needs to have a massive back catalog to justify its existence, that's diversified. In essence, it can spend ludicrous amounts of money because that's exactly how much money Amazon and Hulu are spending or have behind them.

is there another component to Chappelle's deal regarding a scripted or sketch show? Or am I remembering incorrectly? I think Seinfeld has a contract like that.

Baba!

It feels great having Dave back like this. Some of the LGBTQ jokes were funny, but it was a bummer when he was just uttering slurs with no jokes. Came off a bit like a defiant edge lord.

Dave had a similar joke years and years ago from one of those clips The Laugh Factory.put up. It's not really a joke steal.

Um, FragileGAF, please make sure you don't watch any of the Chappelle's Show episodes. Content like this might actually shatter your britle existence.

Hilarious specials.

I can't even imagine a Chappelle stand up where he's not funny or the crowd isn't into it.

The dude makes me laugh just talking.

I thought the 1st one was hilarious and the 2nd one was strong.
As for the LGBT thing, that's just the hot topic now which is why everyone is more sensitive to it. When he was doing the Chapelle's Show the hot topic was race and how he always made fun of white people (White people don't talk like that!). This will also blow over and if Chapelle is still around in 10 years people will be offended when he makes fun of climate or something.

the delivery of "i was furious" when talking about kevin hart had me in stitches.

I love dave, but i feel the same.

Constantly calling trans people "trannies".

And the bit about "your fantasy shouldnt force me to up my pronoun game, youre a dude in a dress" (im paraphrasing)
constantly? i believe he said it once, lets not misrepresent the show for people who haven't watched yet

Nah he said tranny a few times, he said ladyboy once, but he said tranny a few times.

That episode about Dave's experience in his homestate of Ohio was amazing.

I want to know what the ending was.

Watched both back to back. Chappelle hasn't lost one bit and I can't wait for the third special. I liked the second more than the first but they are both good in there own way.

After the fail special from one of the greats Bill Burr i'm so happy to see another great deliver incredible comedy.

I'm about halfway through the first special and it's amazing. It's been a horrible year for Netflix standup specials so far so I'm a little relieved.

When he first enters the first special, you can see a cloud of smoke exit his mouth. It might've just been the dry ice, but I bet it was one last puff before being stuck without for an hour.

He smoked the whole time when I saw him last year. He even had a lady in the audience hold his lighter.

He is the best living comic and these two specials just reaffirm that. Just great.

During the beginning of the second show:

Hmm... that dude in the audience looks like one of the portraits from Pillars of Eternity.

*Googles*

Huh.

For some reason one of the parts that bugged me the most was when he was talking about his gay friend and when the friend said "How do you feel about being married?" Dave said "I'm married to a woman so I wouldn't know what to tell you". He followed through with the joke after that, but that was just such an awkward not-funny moment that kind of spoke to how tone deaf he can be about this shit sometimes.

The pacing was off but the intention was clear. There is a difference maybe not in terms of love but in terms of whether micheal Sam and his husband would be two niggas handling shit in a elevator vs. domestic violence. I agree that the setup for that punchline was worded poorly.

I just saw the first special, it was pretty great.

about the LGBTQ bits

I wasn't really feeling it either. Yes I understand it's comedy. It felt very dehumanizing referring to transgender people as a "T". among some other stuff that I'm not remembering right now.

Dave's career has been built up by observing the lifestyles of certain demographics and pointing out the absurdity and humor of it. I saw the LGBT stuff as exactly that. It was just as funny as the bits where he talks about racial culture, rap culture, rapists, and politics.

You can be a liberal and make fun of yourselves. Poking fun at something and making people laugh about it isn't the same as hating it.

But the Clayton Bixby skit is cool, huh? Or matter of fact any other skit making fun of minorities?

GAF has this weird relationship with feminism and the LGBTQ community where making fun of those two things is super off limits and tabu, but making fun of everything else is a-ok. Racial profiling, using any other number of derogatory terms, murder, rape, you name it.
But oh boy, don't you dare speak ill of the fair sex!

Does anyone know the name of the intro song for both specials? The one that plays after the Morgan Freeman voiceover.

It's so GOOD.

It's the late J Dilla's Workinonit which had me like

The first one was weak as fuck. I was excited to watch it but didn't even get through all of it. I mean there were funny parts, but overall I didn't laugh much. That rape part was particularly bad. If something is going to be offensive it has to at least be funny. A superhero who had to rape in order to activate his powers? Uh yeah I don't get it, sorry

I'll give the second one a try

I think the joke works because it implies the white conservative Texan is interested in rape in the movie superhero movie pitch.

It's all set up for the punchline...

...20 minutes later...

It's kind of brilliant, I thought.

Some of his LGBTQ stuff was rough.

Yeah, I only watched the first half of the first one so far, but his bit w/ the gay super hero and the thai ladyboy stuff was kinda cringey. I get that he's trying to be edgy and I'm supposed to be uncomfortable but it wasn't that funny.

Rest of special so far has been really good but that stuff sticks out like a sore thumb.

This is a good point. I really didn't get that the LGBTQ jokes were bad- if anything it showed how he was trying to put everybody on the same playing field as he's always done.

Like, what makes those jokes more offensive than his black or white people jokes?
