DC announces that Green Lantern will be gay

So, someone correct me on this. Alan Scott is the Green Lantern on Earth 2, an alternate universe to ours, correct?

So Earth 1's Green Lantern is Hal Jordan?

Yeah. Alan Scott exist in an alternate universe. Hal is the main GL of Earth 1, with Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner being the other key GL Corps characters alongside him.

I don't know if the GL Corps exist in Earth 2. Alan has traditionally been portrayed as being separate from the Corps.

Alan Scott is no big surprise. If it had been a more significant character from the franchise, or perhaps a character from a franchise that didn't recently obliterate itself at the box office, I would applaud them for it. As it stands, it's nice to see but that's about it. Nothing laudable, particularly when you consider they had the opportunity to do this with virtually any DC character out there during the reboot, and they went with a C-list character from a B-list franchise.

It is nice to see, though.

Earth 1 isn't the main earth that our heroes were on apartently. As superman is a teenager living in his basement arguing on forums.

Or was that earth prime?

Multiuniverse is just a cheap way to reboot all the time. It resulted from zero hour only because Hal Jordan was destroying the universe and it "broke" the timeline and created all these universes that he wanted to put back together to save his one city.

However multiverses should all be destroyed, it's a terrible plot that they never closed because they enjoyed rewriting over and over cause they don't wanna make new characters.

...Did you just say "totes"? And yeah, they should downplay a character being gay if they want the story to stand on its own merits and send the message that being gay is normal and nothing special. But they aren't, are they?

Anyway, gay characters is old hat by now. Once again, Archie Comics are at the bleeding edge in today's comics:

Life-With-Archie-20-0.jpg

Polygamy! ;O

Marvel is the one shouting from the rooftops. DC is old hat at this gay chara thing already.

Again, they would be stupid to downplay free publicity. I think it's great to let kids know that there are more gay heroes. Archie comics are just catching up to Apollo/Midnighter.

Is there a list with these things? Just looked in the FAQ and couldn't find it. t usually feel like I'm up to date with new banned memes/gifs but I had no idea about that spiderman one.
Just because someone recently got banned because of this pic, do people quickly jump to conclusions. Usually is the "Cool story, bro" type of response gets you banned. Though since it's a comicbook thread, and that spiderman pic is somewhat appropriate, I can see it being ok.

Just curious, why are they rebooting? Was the first one a flop?
Marvel dominating the charts, DC's sales circling the drain after several years of bad decisions and (by their own admission) lame stories. So the answer they came up with was to keep the same people in charge, but reboot the entire line with a new universe and new #1s and costumes, and make everything seem modern and edgy and real with a bunch of Shyamalan twists to existing continuity.

Yeah, I'm rather disappointed. They really could've picked a higher tier character, but whatever. At least there's another.

On a side note, are Apollo/Midnighter in Stormwatch still a thing? I really can't tell with the really diluted flirting.

They began the relationship over but yes they are a "thing"

Alan Scott was the original Green Lantern in the 40's, who had nothing to do with the Green Lantern Corps, but instead just had a magic lantern. Later in the 60s the concept was brought back and used to create Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern as we know it now.

Alan Scott was then bumped around realities for a while. For a time all the 40's heroes existed on Earth-2, then after the first Crisis they all just became old people in the main universe, and now after the New 52 reboot he's back on Earth-2 again.

So, in conclusion: he's an old character that DC has never been sure what to do with.

Pretty weak.

I was hoping it would be an already established character that could have feasibly been in the closet. Something that might have actually been interesting beyond the 5 seconds it took to read this headline.

Making what is essentially a new gay character and calling him Alan Scott just seems cheap and safe.

Like who? Batman or Superman? Not a chance.

The next most popular characters, thanks to movies and such...Wonder Woman and Green Lantern. WW would probably not go over well.

The lower-popularity characters like Flash and Green Arrow aren't as big since they don't have movies or anything like that.

What else is there? Supergirl? Power Girl? Martian Manhunter?

Or you could look at it for what it is. Another positive role model for gay youth, as well as someone to show the straight kids that anyone can be a hero.

Nothing weak about that.

Is there any reason behind this other than some business man thinking "now that obama freed the gays, we should capitalize on it"? Retconing a character to be gay seems weirder than having none of them be gay.

Why is that a banned gif?

probably got spammed a lot and the mods had enough of it. i had no idea it was banned.
It's saying only "neat" in a reply or using an associated macro that's banned:

This also includes things like "weekend gaf", "sounds like a GameFAQs threads", "tl;dr", "cool story, bro", "Neat" and associated image macros, "who gives a shit", etc.

Here I thought the new 52 was supposed to do away w/ that crap. Looks like as long as DC can use the multiverse angle to push stories, like Green Lantern being gay, they'll do it. Kind of cheap, IMO.

It easily could have been Jason Todd.

Since I had heard that it was supposed to be a big-time character, I thought Cyborg might have fit the bill now that he's a Justice Leaguer.

Connor Kent?

Or you could read some of the background and see that this was in the works long before that... but no just jump to the negative. That's better for everyone.

NPH to play Green Lantern in the reboot.

You know what? That would actually get me to see a Green Lantern movie.

That said: Not a single fuck was given about this, given the Green Lantern is such a minor character in most peoples minds. (Yes, Comic Book fans, get mad or whatever, it's true.)

Batman's always been gay. I don't care what you or DC say. *gay finger snaps in a Z and walks away*

I'm in work at the moment and don't have time to read the background. Only hearing about it earlier, it definitiely sounds more reactionary than pre planned. Glad I was wrong.

Or I could wish that the company would have more balls and have a gay character that somebody would actually care about, thus fitting the bill of being a role model for gay youth.

This phony Alan Scott thing won't go far, I don't think.

Is there any reason behind this other than some business man thinking "now that obama freed the gays, we should capitalize on it"?

That isn't even the reason. James Robinson, writer of "Earth 2", personally decided to do it and ran that decision by DC Editorial, who gave him the okay.

Newsarama: James, we've been told that DC has been making an effort to bring diversity into the DCU. Was this something you were asked to do by editors? Or was it something you came up with as you were creating the comic?

James Robinson: It was the latter. It was something I came up with when I was first putting this modern version of Justice Society together about eight months ago.

I really believe in this idea of relaunching the Justice Society and making them younger. But I thought it was a shame that we lost Jade and Obsidian, who are Alan Scott's children. Obsidian has been in the comics for years and was a positive gay character.

And then, in the way that one idea can spring forward to the next, I thought, well, let's make Alan Scott gay. And to DC and to Dan DiDio's credit, when I ran the idea past him, there wasn't a moment's hesitation. He was like, "Yeah, that's great. Let's do it."

I can't speak for him, honestly, but if he's anything like me, he's a little bit surprised that the media and people have been so interested in it. Although I guess it's really great that the book's getting attention because of it.

Nrama: So the reason you decided to change Alan Scott this way was because he was Obsidian's father? Because you could have added a new character to make up for that loss of diversity, but you specifically chose to change one that already existed, and you're getting a lot of attention as a result. This wasn't for the attention? Are you saying it was all linked to Obsidian?

Robinson: Well, it isn't linked in any way that you're going to see. It was just my thought process at the time. I just thought, "Oh, well, there's no Obsidian in the DC Universe anymore. So we lost a gay character. That's a shame." And then from there I landed upon Alan Scott.

As for why not just create a new gay character, I just wanted to do this. I mean, it's one thing if you're creating a new team with new characters, but that isn't what the Justice Society is. It's me rebooting existing characters.

I think you have to remember that this is a reboot. It isn't like I'm taking an old character and suddenly making this character gay. This is a brand new interpretation of this character.

It was the comic nerds and news sites that blew this up and made it a big thing. DC's done gay characters for years.

Or I could wish that the company would have more balls and have a gay character that somebody would actually care about, thus fitting the bull of being a role model for gay youth.

This phony Alan Scott thing won't go far, I don't think.

Kids will care if they make Alan worth caring about. It has nothing to do with balls. And there's nothing "phony" here.

I shouldn't be shocked at the jaded responses but here I am face palming.

ReiGun, don't bother. It's not worth it.

And yet it gets announced right when Marvel does the Northstar-wedding story in X-Men!

Yup. Not to mention that Teen Titans has a gay character.

This is being done for publicity/sales. These are super hero comics....why does sexual orientation even matter? LOL.

It was never "announced". Bleeding Cool ran with ....nevermind. Whatever you like.

It matters because gay kids need role models.

Eh, Green Lantern is kind of a C lister nowadays no?

If they are going to go ahead with this, why not go for the gusto and make it Batman or Superman.

or both

Because comic companies should be worried about making gay characters popular and compelling, not making popular and compelling characters gay.

Because to DC it is no big deal. They have tons of LGBT heroes. The press made more out of it and now people are acting as if they are owed something more than a C lister. o_O

Which DC has done for years and years so you're right. In fact they have multiple GLAAD awards to show for it.

I agree totally. I feel DC should create a character who struggles with peer pressure to be straight and tell how she/he being a superhero gave them confidence to come out as the story evolves around being gay is not an evil thing.

What's completely phony and gutless is that it's not the Alan Scott that we've known for 70 years or whatever. They're straddling the fence by calling this new character Alan Scott, but making him different enough that the legacy of the character won't be irreparably "damaged" by the sexuality change.

Somehow I doubt making the token black guy also gay would go over well either.

Isn't this about being progressive and stuff?

Is Alan Scott even a member of the traditional Green Lantern Corps? No one even knows who he is, it'd be like if you made Wild Child or Deathlok gay in Marvel.

Because to DC it is no big deal. They have tons of LGBT heroes. The press made more out of it and now people are acting as if they are owed something more than a C lister. o_O

You're acting as if DC didn't know this would be a story. Of COURSE they did. They clearly planned for this to make headlines and gather attention, because both DC and Marvel take every chance they get for mainstream press.

And for the record, they specifically said "a major, iconic, male." They built this up as if it were an A-lister.

Yes, it is, but given that it's already being labelled as a hollow gesture, making the token minority even MORE of a minority simply doesn't lend itself to positive media.

Eh, I still feel like pissing off a few people here and there is kind of the point, but I guess I kind of see what you mean.

But still. Jason Todd.

He's did just get a popularity boost from the movie. Did you REALLY think it was going to be Batman or Superman?

Again: it's not the Green Lantern from the movie. Completely different character who happens to have the same name.

All the headlines just referring to him as Green Lantern are incredibly misleading.

Because comic companies should be worried about making gay characters popular and compelling, not making popular and compelling characters gay.

So why have TGL, come out of the closet at all.

Personally, I think you can do a lot more with an original creation that's built from the ground up to reflect what it's like to be a gay superhero in contemporary America or wherever. The struggles and triumphs would feel more genuine than retconning it on a super hero that really hasn't identified with the community until now.

Alan Scott is gay?
harrison-ford-who-gives-a-shit.gif

Alan Scott hasnt been "major" since forever....here i was slightly scared that it was going to be Kyle or guy but earth 2 guys....go ahead DC do as you please, you have already ruined Jay Flashs costume, why not make Alan Scott gay?

Basically DC got rid of one gay character and put another....both are equally as unknown to the general public so.......
Nonetheless, i think Marvel takes it in this case....the gay marriage seems to carry more impact than making a golden age character from another universe gay.

Again: it's not the Green Lantern from the movie. Completely different character who happens to have the same name.

No one in the public knows or cares about the difference. That's the entire point of this sort of media stunt.
