Destiny: April Update Preview

Nothing here to encourage me coming back. PoE was the worst endgame activity and light level is pointless. I will skip Destiny 2 altogether if the same end game rng on top of rng system remains.

yeah as someone who really enjoyed destiny at launch and taken king but stopped playing back in Nov, this update is kinda weird. They should really add matchmaking to EVERYTHING, Division has clearly proved that is JUST FINE and you don't need to try and protect everyone from bad game sessions. The fact that bungie still refuses to matchmake the end game stuff is frustrating, combined with their attitude of new content = new loot in old places does not make me very enthusiastic for Destiny 2.

I know i'll buy it at launch, who am I kidding, but right now I feel like I'll treat it like Division - bought the regular edition, played and enjoyed for 2 weeks, traded in.

Seriously what about the division even sniffs at Destiny max level raids? I have seen absolutely nothing.

I agree about the patch being late and not enough to pull people back in. I'll probably run the new story stuff and leave. Maybe not even log in at all. But comparing destiny raids to anything I've experienced in the division is laughable honestly.

I always lol when people downplay raid mechanics. It's good teams (and repetition) that make it look easy. Doesn't necessarily mean the raid is mechanically easy.

There are no raid mechanics in the division. Just hide behind a box and shoot things.

I think I'm pulling the plug on The Division soon and will get the ol' traderoo treatment. I was so close to buying the gold version too so I'm glad I didn't. I don't know, I enjoy the game but the end game is so shit right now and the loot is just not exciting in the least.

I think they will eventually add Matchmaking to almost everything except Raids which is fine by me.

so why don't you wait until Tuesday when they are having a stream talking about their upcoming end game plans?

Not going to say you're wrong, but the bolded could easily describe a surprisingly large amount of my high level playtime with Destiny (Nightfalls in particular).

Maybe vanilla. But most of the Taken King strikes have bosses with arenas that don't really promote that.

Not to mention the raids.

Honestly, I had no clue that was even a thing. Thanks for telling me because I will wait for that and watch it. What time and where? Twitch?

Sounds like a decent excuse to dust off my Warlock and head back out.

I never even got around to running the last raid. The one time I had the time, I got dropped due to internet nonsense.

Wonder if I can rope my brothers back into it...

Some people man, both Destiny and Division can be played and enjoy different experiences.

Ain't nobody got time for that. In theory this sounds nice, but personally I spent a good chunk of the time I wanted to play Destiny looking for groups because the activities I wanted to do didn't have matchmaking. I'd probably still be playing it off and on if I could just matchmake a Trials group or a NF or Raid. It's just too much time and too much effort to do basic things in Destiny.

On the other hand, however you feel about The Division it's efficient. I log on. I choose one of the hard or challenge missions, hit matchmaking and 60 seconds later I'm playing. It's wonderful.

I never said at the same time.

The main idea is that it lets Bungie have certain weapons expire.

For instance, lately there has been a resurgence in a couple of weapons from the first year of Destiny. Namely Thorn and Ice Breaker.

Which is a shame and a core problem of Destiny :/ the most exotic weapons with wild features are the most fun to use and there should be more of them. But they tend to break all notion of balanced gameplay in PvP.

Trials should just normalize armor levels and use pre-determined loadouts in my opinion. Emphasize pure skill.

Expiring gear due to box level is standard for MMOs though.

For one, it lets the developer gently expire out old gear and weapons that either broke the sandbox or won't fit in the future plans.

Two, it's absolutely insane to expect anyone to balance a bajillion weapons for the current boxlevel endgame with each update. Limiting the scope of the rebalance keeps things sane and doesn't pin you down to decisions made 3, 5, or 10 years earlier.

The difference Destiny has is that all weapons are normalized in the Crucible, so you can use old gear in there as much as you want.

It isn't Halo anymore, where there's a palette of guns that stay in the game from launch to EOL. And even then Bungie reduced or eliminated certain guns and abilities from certain playlists. 343 did too. It's just that due to the way those Halo games were setup, nothing ever replaced them.

The Raids were absolutely my favorite part of Destiny, but claiming that all you do in The Division is hide behind a box and shoot things is fucking wacko, especially in the endgame.

*hide behind a box and shoot things then backpedal into a chokepoint when the pre-determined shotgun scout wave spawns. Unless you're rocking all-HE min-maxed gear. Then just faceroll everything.

I'm enjoying TD, but even I have to admit that's what it basically boils down to. None of the endgame stuff forced me to do anything besides move from cover to cover and shoot shit.

The nice thing about not having mechanics in end game content is that you don't have to suffer through wiping over and over when people are screwing up the mechanics over and over again

I've spent quite some time playing The Division these last few weeks & i've spent hundreds of hours playing Destiny. Right now, i'm at the point where I feel like i'm 'done' with The Division - the gameplay loop keeps reminding me of an AC game. Don't get me wrong, DZ is a unique system that is implemented well. There is a lot there that I hope they build on. But for me, the skills & enemy variety got old around the 8 hour mark. I'm nearly 30 hours in now and nothing's really changed.

The completionist in me wants to go through & do all the encounters & side missions, but after clearing half of the map, i've seen enough repeats in side-missions/encounters to know what i'm in for in the 2nd half, just with First Wave/LMB enemies instead. The gameplay structure realllly reminds me of AC actually - find a Safe House, unlock locations for Encounters/Side missions, clear them to reveal all collectible locations in that area. Rinse & repeat until you're 30.

In some ways, it boils down to the shooting. Not only is the gameplay not as fun or as engaging in TD as it is in Destiny, but the sheer amount of variables that go into my skills & weapons and how they relate to the enemies make each & every firefight basically become a slog when compared to Destiny. The only engaging thing TD has for me is the emergent PVP gameplay that DZ offers. And while it is very exciting and unique, it's just not expanded enough to make me want to come back. I can't imagine that the incursion to be released will be anywhere near as engaging as a Destiny raid either.

All of this to say 1 thing - I am eagerly anticipating more Destiny content in the coming years, whatever it may be. I'm more than okay with playing other games to wait for it.

With 55 hours in I'm at the same point with the Division. It's was much more fun than Destiny to max level... But nowhere near as much to do once you're there. Not even close. Will be on when content hits for a week or two just as I am with Destiny. Most def worth the price of admission though. I got my money's worth for sure.

After putting about 30 hours into The Division, I have to respectfully disagree. They're very different games, and the Division is a far less polished experience.

I mean...look at Destiny when it launched. Division will improve, just like the shit Destiny was when it was first released.

Damn Bungie making me want to level a Titan.

Or Eververse exclusive.

Nah they wouldn't heavily advertise it like they have if it was behind that paywall. No way. Doesn't mean something similar might not come along later on but at this point everything you've seen is free as they mentioned (well assuming you have TTK).

I wish they would have pulled VoG into year 2. It was by far my favorite RAID. Even if they brought the VoG weapons/armor into y2 without the elements that would have been fine.

Still on the fence about the new update. If the gear looks good I'll jump back in for a few. otherwise I'll stick with TD as I still have to collect all the things

Sorry Bungie, but The Division is the new Destiny

I've completed The Division entirely and put about 65 hours into it. Destiny is better, in my opinion, in almost every aspect. The only thing Destiny lacks in comparison to The Division is matchmaking on missions. End game Division is horrible at the moment and can't think of one reason to continue playing until the DLC arrives.

Definitely looking forward to this. I've got a lot of love for Destiny and, while I've enjoyed plugging away in The Division, it's not quite as fun for me. Anything that gives me an excuse to go back into Destiny, I'll take.

Want to know how Destiny MM would go for raids? Play TESO's Vet Dungeons or even normal. Wait forever and get a party of idiots that wipe on the first boss. Vet dungeons are even worse because, they require communication and aren't just DPS the boss. Usually the bosses have lots of adds and a ton of complicated mechanics that make communicating critical. TESOs MM is a complete and utter failure. Either get a group online, or get face rolled by the first boss in a vet dungeon if you even get that far.

I really hope the new strike is more like Skolas and less like other strikes. Skolas is imho the best encounter in the game in terms of mechanics and teamwork save maybe Atheon. I hope they devote more time to complex mechanics and less to neat-looking bullet sponges. Might have to wait for fall expansion though.
