Destiny - The Target/Firing Range (an idea)

I've always been a big fan of virtual firing/target ranges in FPSs. They let us check out new weapons and their attachments, modifiers etc. while giving us some practice.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Bungie developed a target/firing range in Destiny and placed it in the Tower for Guardians to gather and test their newly acquired weapons and modifiers?! Even against each other...

This could really be a fun, social area that could hold events, utilize bounties (eliminate 200 fallen with a sniper at 200 yards at "The Range") and offer special rewards!

Some ideas...

There could be different areas or sections etc. where different types of targets were placed that would show weapon damage figures at various ranges. Stationary, standard targets.

There could also be "virtual" ranges with enemy spawns (Enemy's could look translucent like a hologram) where players select the desired mob or boss and it appears before them for them or a team of Guardians to destroy.

There could be a currency and event system where players might sign up for daily/weekly events that cost a fee (some # raw material or motes?) and challenge players to dispatch certain "virtual enemies" or targets in timed matches. Higher the entry fee the higher the reward.

There could also be 1:1 or 3:3 fireteam range matches were you go up against other guardians to see who has the best aim and weapons and who can eliminate your desired scenario the quickest tracking precision kills etc. This would give those who enjoy PvE and not PvP a way to directly compete with other Guardians.

I honestly think something like this would work and work very well! Destiny and the Tower need more social interaction and a fun target/firing range with events and loot prizes would be a hit.

What do you guys/gals think?

I like it, I also think they should add a large track with jumps and stuff for people to cruise around on their sparrows.

I'm on board with the challenges and stuff, even if they seem to be a novel distraction rather than an sustainable timesink. I think given the hoards of enemies that spawn in the actual game world and the easiness of switching weapons on the fly, why not just go out and try out your weapons in the 'real world'?

I spent a lot of time in Perfect Dark's shooting range doing the weapon challenges. If anything it would just be some extra content for Destiny. Which it really needs. inb4 dlc ripoff.

The challenges, possibility of extra bounties for XP/marks and loot prizes appeal to me. I agree on "go out in the real world" as well.

The ability to test weapons before buying them is a feature I'm surprised I haven't come across. Sometimes all it takes is a certain scope to either turn me off a gun or make me fall in love. It sucks to buy an expensive gun in a game and find you don't like how it feels or works in some capacity.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier had a rather good implementation of a shooting range. Of course, the gun assembly feature itself came up short, but the virtual firing range was solid.

On the other hand, I doubt Destiny requires this. With most gun types you know what to expect pretty soon. And the different attachments and gun perks need to be grinded for, so you cannot really test them on the fly either.

It's much, much, more about the social PvE competition aspect from how i envision it.

Think of it like those squirt gun or bb gun target games at the fair/carnival. You'd go head to head with people to win loot.

Hell, for every special milestone you get a legendary or etc. For every contest or match you place in you get an appropriate reward.

Def woldnt be for everyone. But i don't think anyone could argue it wouldn't be a frequented spot/system in the tower.

These are still part of the game...

Future paid DLC release.

Ugh, dont even say that... scary how true it could be.

Sparrow racing could be a fun idea too.

Hell yes it would. A F-zero/WipeOut -esq ring around the outside/under the tower that you could see people zipping around on would be awesome. Might be too "light hearted" for the tone bungie's going for though. Could you imagine the crucible PvP guy announcing the race lol.

Sparrow racing could be a fun idea too.
In their current manifestation, Sparrow racing would be the dullest, most frustrating idea ever.

If they can manage to get the Sparrows closer to Wipeout cars, it'd be awesome. But Bungie would never invest the time and money to do this.

The game definitely needs more social features like dueling, arenas, even the competitive shooting challenges sound interesting.

Shouldn't be that hard to do, honestly. WoW has target dummies and it's just seems like such a simple thing.

Hundreds of people asked for this during the alpha and beta. They are not gonna add it. They dont give an f.

It seems like it woiuld be very simple. (what do i know though lol) And something that would be entered into via the tower but would sort of be more like matchmaking. Idk, never going to happen anyway lol

I figured. Really a shame as it could be a lot of fun.

Just go to earth, Mars, or Venus patrol missions it would be the same thing. Just a waste of time, imo, to add a range to test your weapons when enemies already infinitely spawn and can be found in patrol missions.

I can see you're point if it were just "testing out weapons". That would be the 5% of it.

How do you feel about shooting competitions, range bounties etc. with loot rewards and more. Nothing to replace patrol missions but something else social at the tower for people to enjoy.

And go through three loading screens to test out your gun?

Now thats a waste of time

Don't all the weapons pretty much feel the same though within their subcategory? Not to knock the game but that's what it seemed like to me. Don't think you'd benefit that much from it other than to check damage numbers.

There is no "just" going anywhere in Destiny though.

A: Go to Orbit (load orbit)
B: Choose Destination
C: Flying Animation Loadscreen to switch planets
D: Overworld flying loadscreen animation
E: Test gun
F: Return to orbit
G: Choose Destination
H: Flying Animation Loadscreen to switch planets
I: Tower flying loadscreen animation
J: Put gun in vault for secondary characters

repeat

Again. More about the social aspect with competitions and bounties and loot rewards.

I agree with you that most of the weapons are pretty similar.
