Well, it was speculated earlier in the thread when I posted that article that made it seem like S8 would air in the summer (now confirmed) that perhaps Showtime was going for a Breaking Bad-esque S5. Two halfs. Say 8 episodes in June and then a final 8 in early 2014.

I think she had signed a contracted up to and including the first episode of season 8. That's how we knew early on that she wouldn't die later on in season 7.
Semi related, I've been making my way through Six Feet Under and it's given me a new appreciation of Michael C. Hall's acting abilities. His mannerisms and speech are completely different from Dexter.
Just finished watching Season 7 recently. Quite a gigantic step up from the abominations that Season 5 and 6 (although I thought Mos Def played his role as the reformed convict pretty well, Bill Adama could've been put to better use though) were, while not quite being up there with the first two seasons.
On the other hand, the latter fourth of the season had the very unnecessary miniarc with the arsonist that was resolved in 2-3 episodes which had no bearing whatsoever with the main storyline. Even the "skinner" miniarc at the end of Season 3 tied in with the Miguel Prado's arc in some way, if I remember correctly.
Ray Stevenson who played Isaac Sirkov was just masterful. He was a great counterpart to Micheal C. Hall's Dexter in this season. I fully expected them to have a great showdown leading up to the finale, but that storyline went no where and just fizzled out to a disappointing conclusion.
(Gunned down by an inferior subordinate, really?)
Jennifer Carpenter has really grown into the role of Debra this season. I used to despise how she played Deb in the earlier seasons. My sole reason for picking up this show 6 - 7 years ago was seeing the prospect of Micheal C. Hall whom I absolutely adored in 6 Feet Under play a serial killer who kills other killers. I now have two reasons to watch this show.
It's strange that it got moved to the summer, not that I'm complaining. But would that suggest that Dexter's ratings were worse this season since they're moving it to the summer block?
They could also want to do a few addition episodes and so do another 6 episodes in the winter, having 18 episodes altogether to finish it off properly.
Summer is going to be awesome. Breaking Bad final season and Dexter final season airing at the same time. Isn't a new season of Mad Men also starting in summer?

Hey guys first post here on gaf. I recently caught up on S7 and thought it was a great season overall especially compared to the prior two. I thought Issac was a great characterr overall but I did not like the sudden change of mind he had with dexter once he found out the two hitman were coming after him. I mean whole talk they had in the bar the prior episode made it seem like Issac would not let Dexter live no matter what and then next episode BAM he changes his mind.

I think 4 seasons would have been fine. Finding dexter's dumping ground in the ocean was an ace in the hole and writers used it way too fucking soon. That should have signaled the beginning of the end, not been a one off thing (i know they brought the repercussions of that season into play again, but its long over due) Season 2 was fun at the time and was a pressure cooker of a season but in retrospect spoiled a lot of the shows potential. It was also the start of Dexter becoming overly emotional (for a character who supposedly had no emotions) which i think was the writers trying harder and harder to make him relatable to the audience. He's a cold blooded killer who enjoys what he does. He should be alien to the audience and unrelatable simply due to his nature.
Season 1 side story stuff wasnt amazing but it wasn't grating either. It usually tied back to dexter in some way. Debs love life only became a focus of the show because it directly connected back to dexter and the main plot with Rudy. The side story stuffs been a disaster since then.
In a perfect world, season 2 would have been the Trinity season, sans all the relationship drama with Rita. Dexter should still be the cool, calm character from season 1 (not the emotional wreck from season 2) and still unmarried. Rita would be the front and cover for dexs normal life like she started out as. Lundy would still be there, but looking for trinity like season 4. Dexter beats the ultimate killer in trinity but pays the price with ritas death. Season 3 would be where they find dexters bodies, possibly due to dex getting sloppy (as apposed to some random divers just finding them.) Rita is gone, dex must deal with the questions surrounding what he does with his free time to deb and his colleagues at the station. Lundy is still alive and brought back in for the BHB case. Doakes is still alive, him being the one pushing into dexters personal life. This ends similar to season 2 with doakes being blamed for the BHB case. LaGuerta never believes it but knows its someone in the station.
The first half of season 4 would be what we got with season 7. Deb finds out what dexter is, eventually ends up covering for him and dealing with the guilt that goes along with it. LaGuerta finds evidence that the BHB is still around and know he works at the station. Combined with Doakes mistrust of dexter, she puts the pieces together. (As apposed to waiting 5 fucking years to figure shit out). Midway through season 4,
deb shoots LaGuerta like in the season 7 finale
. The second half of season 4 would be Dexters downfall with deb having been thrown into his world of lies when she
murdered LaGuerta
. They try to cover it up but things are finally catching up to Dexter when Lundy is brought back in after
LaGuertas murder, LaGuertas
notes are found concerning her suspicions of Dexter. Dex is either caught or killed, his last regrets being that he dragged his beloved sister down with him

I like that but I'd go for 5 seasons, just because this season 7 was pretty damn amazing and shortening it down to half a season would have been awful.
All the relevant story progression happened during the first few episodes with Deb and Dexter (which was amazing) then towards the end with Dexter, Deb and LaGuerta. The stuff with Ray Stevenson had its moments but only because he was a good character, it added very little to the show. It was side story stuff. The Quinn/stripper stuff was completely worthless. This is the third time we had explored the "female love interest which knows my secret" role Yvonne Strahovski played (Lila and Lumen). It was worn out.
I think the middle of season 7 had a lot of filler
It's strange that it got moved to the summer, not that I'm complaining. But would that suggest that Dexter's ratings were worse this season since they're moving it to the summer block?
Nope. Now that Homeland has an established audience, they're comfortable splitting Dexter and Homeland into different seasons and pairing both these shows with two new shows to help launch them.
I stopped at episode 7 or 8 when it aired. Season started off strong and really started dragging towards the middle, so I was going to wait for the season to end and catch up. Then I forgot. But then I found out that Showtime Anytime is a thing (for real, I had never heard of it and it kind of sucks compared to HBO Go, but I've not seen any talk of it or commercials at all) and finished out the season.
Kind of weird that they neatly wrapped up the main storyline 3 episodes before the end of the season. In retrospect, half or more of the season was completely meaningless. Everything with Issak, Hannah's dad, actually pretty much everything that wasn't the love reveal or BHB related were just filler. Was pleasantly pleased that they didn't end in a total cock tease like last season, and I wasn't expecting what actually happened. For sure looking forward to the final season.
My overall feeling of the season is that it was a lot better than the past 2 terrible seasons, but was still messy and had some particularly bad dialog in the last 2-3 episodes. The show has stretched the line of credulity way too far. It's ready to end. I hope it has a strong finish that washes away the bitter taste of 5 and 6 a bit.
I can't fucking believe that Quinn made it through another god damn season. On a show full of murderers, rapists, and general scum bags, he's by far the least likable character.
I just watched through Season 7 for the second time, and it's still really good. It's not perfect, but it's pretty unbelievable how much of a step up it is from the previous 2 seasons. I like it more than Season 4, but I never really understood the hype behind that season (the Trinity Killer is good, but the Ice Truck Killer was far more interesting to me).
My official ranking of the seasons: 1>2>7>3>4>>>>5>6
I recently rewatched Seasons 1-4 as well, and I gotta say that Miguel is one of the best characters in the show. It's a shame he's not even mentioned after season 3. Then again, the season is mostly filler, but it's enjoyable!

Yep. People don't like that Season for various legitimate reasons. But to me, Miguel Prado is the most entertaining part of the Season. Jimmy Smits really nailed the part lol.
In retrospect the show really had some A/B listers play bit roles on the show. Smitts who played Senator Organa in Star Wars in Season 3, the funny dude from 3rd rock from the Sun in Season 4, Julia Stiles and Robocop in Season 5, Bill Adama from Battlestar Galactica in Season 6, Sarah Walker from Chuck in Season 7.
Watched the Season 7 finale last night. I'm glad I gave this show another chance after the season 5-6 shittiness that I had to endure. And what's even more annoying is how much people I know hyped up the past seasons acting as if it's the best TV when it's nowhere close. They did so many things right this season and it resulted in the show actually being interesting. I feel that they could have packed this show into 6 seasons, kept all the high points that occurred in the plot, polished up the plot, removed the pointless love stories/filler/kill the bad guy of the week, improved character development, and this show would have been incredible. I'm actually really looking forward to what happens in the final season.
trying to stage LeGuerta's murder, I knew Deb would kill her. Just seemed like the natural step.
Really well acted scene by Carpenter, and I really though her decision was made based off her lover for Dexter as her brother and potential lover. So it's pretty jarring to hear that it will just disappear, cause I felt that she was always a bit jealous of Hannah, and one of her main
objectives was to get rid of her for that very reason.
It was pretty obvious that Deb was gonna plummet to Dexter's level, and become his next main sidekick. Giving him permission to murder Hannah makes her just as responsible if he went through with it, and her framing LeGuerta on her own without Dexter's help or word was pretty brilliant.
This season was a definite step up from the last two, and I'm actually genuinely curious on how it ends. I still find it a bit lol that LeGuerta
Would drive out there alone, I understand she was in bad standings with the department for arresting Dexter, but still. She was able to figure all that shit out, and see through Dexter and Debs bullshit. At some points completely outsmarting Dexter, but it never came across her mind that shit might have been a little off? LOL
Any, I enjoyed it, shits on S5 and S6. Arguably up there with S4 just because of the last few episodes. I still love this show. I can only hope that S8 is this good or decent on most levels.
