DF: Battlefield 4 XB1 vs. PS4

Yup. That's what I get out of this and similar threads.

Coming into this gen, once the specs were known, I expected plenty of hypocrisy regarding the differences in 3rd party games versus what happened with 360 vs PS3. Plenty of role reversals - 'graphics don't make the game', 'games are still fun', 'other features', etc.

What I didn't expect however was a concerted effort to actively frame the power delta as 'diminishing returns' or 'insignificant' when the differences are objectively and subjectively far greater than what we saw last gen. And those previous differences resulted in such well documented flamewars and salty tears.

It's like we've entered crazy land.

Well said. I feel like we need rules for tech threads. "I can't notice a difference" is not the same statement as "there are insignificant differences". One is an opinion and the other is objectively, quantifiably wrong.

This thread is like a case study on the workings of a fanboy mind. Professor coldfoot is dishing out education.

I can tell your first hand that BF4 on xbox one is pretty rough. Anything past 10-15 feet is a jaggy mess. Whenever you don't have to look far away it looks amazing but beyond that it's monstrous.

Its understandable, the ps4 has also some in your face pop ins. Even on top of the line pc you will get some odd drops in the 30's. With a powerful gfx card and strong pc you get 60 fps almost all the time, but it will drop from time to time.

Game is just a beast when it comes to requirements! Way too much stuff going on!

Yes, I'm certain I would. I've been playing Ghosts on both new consoles, and the moment I booted up that XB1 version I knew it didn't look as good as the PS4 version.

I also downloaded the big files of both versions of BF4 that Digital Foundry posted, and I could tell the difference watching those videos on my HDTV.

I wanted to create a thread talking about the differences but you did and the, in my opinion, bad controller for fps. But sometimes the debates are not worth the time, especially on Gaf.

I had the same reaction when i tried COD on One and then pop'd up the PS4 version, the difference is clearly there. PS4 looks better and plays better, hands down ! Also, i never thought i would say this but the Dual Shock 4 is a better controller than the Xbox One controller and i was a huge fan of the 360 controller last gen. I thought the Xbox One controller this gen would easily be the better one for fps but Sony came with a bang and released an almost perfect controller. I can only imagine how Xbox fanboys have a hard time digesting all of this... I'm still buying an Xbox One next year probably when there's good bundles but my multiplatform gaming will officially be on PS4 since most of my friends migrated there, controller and all the performance...

I game on 720p LCD (sony bravia)
Would downsampling from 900p (ot 1080p in other cases) make difference compared to xb1 720p? Would it help with aliasing?

I'm surprised with the added power of PS4 that they didn't come up with a much better anti aliasing solution. Killzone looks great and that runs at 1080p.
Cross gen / multi plat / launch title.

IQ tends to suffer across the board early on in hardware generations (barring stuff like arcade titles, etc. that are less taxing). It takes time have an efficient engine, library, and tools that leave enough power and time overhead to R&D the most suitable AA solutions for a given hardware platform. Just looks at the IQ of early PS360 titles versus what we are seeing now.

awwwww shit Coldfoot regulating like warren G.

Thanks. And for the sake of quality discourse I agree.

That said, we'd also be losing the glory of stuff like coldfoot's thruthfact beat downs :p

Hot damn, if you're a hypocrite, coldfoot will find you. Good on you sir to call out those who deserve to be called out.

Absolutely.

If you look at badly undersampled thin objects (like power lines, cranes made of lots of thin metal bars, etc), there's a very noticeable difference in shimmering even in youtube 360p compression. Your 720p TV will have no trouble resolving the discrepancy.

At the moment the gap doesn't seem big enough for me to care, but if it does indeed widen then PS4 will be a must buy in the future.
