[DF] Death Stranding Director's Cut PS5: The Digital Foundry Tech Review

ds-2021-09-23-21-34-55-646.png

just kiddin' , but my girl was this an amazing port
Let me guess. This is from a 3070/3080 at 4k DLSS? That's cheating :P

you can literally build anything anywhere in the world though. helping others is the game.

my favorite part of the game was building bridges on cliffs to help others cut through. putting down ziplines to help others connect. building highways, and putting down umbrellas for others to recharge and heal their vehicles in the rain. I had hundreds of thousands of likes on some bridges and ziplines.

By the time i finished playing the game after around 100 hours, i had well over 2 million likes from people just using my creations.

I wonder how unloved my structures are in the game 🤔 I haven't played it for a very long time now.

Is there anyway in the menus to see what likes ya structures have?

Also. Not bad for a fiver upgrade with new things added. I'll happily pay it considering I only paid 30 quid for it on PS4 a few days after it came out.

Bought the upgrade now, totally worth it. I bought the PS4 version last year at a discount but haven't played it. Got this Directors Cut version for roughly $40 in total.

Ummm okay, but I took screenshots of the same save point on my PS4 Pro and my PS5 and the PS4 Pro version is inferior graphically compared to PS5.

PS4 Pro. Tow truck is also missing it's front wheel. That will pop-in when you get closer (LOD)

PS5. Notice the extra grass detail into the distance as well as the tow truck has it's wheels back?

The extra polygons in the mag wheel under the table. PS4 Pro on the Left

PS4 Pro, look by the sign that's facing away from Decon. No grass

PS5, lots of grass

JolSth6.png

PS4 Pro. Look by the cop car and under the red truck. No grass

PS5, lots of extra grass by the truck and cop car. Further draw distances.

Edit: I first noticed the extra detail when I played it on PS5 because I specifically remember hating how many low-poly objects there were so close to the camera on PS4 Pro, and when I saw it was fixed on PS5, I was pleasantly surprised. Sadly, DF never picked up on any of that. They just looked at resolution and frame rate.
I've only played it on ps5 andI thought it looked insane for a ps4 game lol. Makes sense.

I´m glad I decided to continue playing on my Full HD tv with much lower input lag they are selling us today and don't fall for marketing. 60fps and super sampling on almost full PS5 catalog. I don't have to worry about quality modes, because the performance modes are always over 1080p

Yes, the 16:9 mode is the normal aspect ratio of your TV and the PS4 version.

The 16:9 quality mode is native 4K, full 3840 x 2160. Thats ~ 8.3 million pixels per frame. Hardest to render. Thus it dips below 60 FPS at times.
The 16:9 performance mode is lower res, 3200 x 1800. Thats ~ 5.76 million pixels per frame. Easier to render. Thus its locked 60 FPS.

The 21:9 ultrawide quality mode is native 4K, but 3840 x 1644. Thats ~ 6.3 million pixels per frame. Easier to render. Thus its locked 60 FPS.
The 21:9 ultrawide performance mode is lowest res, 3200 x 1370. Thats ~ 4.38 million pixels per frame. Easiest to render. Thus its locked 60 FPS.
I wonder at what points of the game does it dip and is it a regular occurrence.

Shame there is no DRS between 1800p and 2160. Locked 60 everywhere while maintaining 4k most of the time. Lets hope for a patch.

how do you know that they don't know then? are you versed in the field? if not, how do you know they aren't? how are you qualified to say they don't know what they are talking about?
the fact is, in order for you to be able to critique their knowledge in the field, YOU yourself need the knowledge you claim that they don't have.
it's a paradoxical claim, because you claim something even tho you don't know shit, while you would need to know about that shit in order to support your claim.

so prove it or STFU maybe?
People with knowledge knows about it

The ultrawide mode is a cool way to save some performance while still having the clarity of native 4K. More games of the cinematic variety should offer something like that.

it really does look fantastic. I just picked up an LG OLED too, really looking forward to giving this a shot. I especially like how mixed the reception is.

I did watch the video and own the game. It's hard to think of a more boring open world game than this. Still I guess John did like Crackdown 3
He literally talks about why in the video my guy. He says the issue with most open world games is how you spend most of the time traveling around the map, which is meaningless, but in this game, that's the gameplay.

He says that in very plain terms. Did you really watch the video and not get that? That's really frightening.

Is there any upgrade path from the PS4 version or they want me to buy the game again?

Yes it is £5 and very simple, I do not even care about the save "game" Kojima is playing or whether it was a technical oversight that you had to finish any orders before exporting.

I am just going to start a brand new run on the PS5 Directors Cut version once I am done with FF7 remake intergrade and it will be glorious

Can someone explain how to access to such upgrade. Because I own the game digitally but I can't find any option to buy the upgrade at 10 €. There is just the choice between 49,99 and 59,99 for the full goty edition in my store and that's it. I have the psn plus.

Aren't the savings lessened somewhat because of wider FOV with more geometry/shadows displayed?

Looks like an amazing upgrade and I can't wait to play it again. It was such a great experience and it's a shame I never finished it but I'll hopefully do it on PS5. Congrats to kojipro and and Sony 👌

Quick Summary:
- Default is PERFORMANCE MODE, Locked 60fps 1800p
- QUALITY MODE is full 4k, variable 60fps, drops to mid-40's during heavy action
- ULTRA-WIDE Mode is 3840x1642p, mainly locked 60fps with just very minor hard to find dips (intense mirror scene)
- Low Anisotropic Filtering on all modes
- LODs are pushed further out on all modes
- Minor map changes
- Games supports Keyboard & Mouse (Can even combine Mouse and Controller)
- Dualsense features are "some of the best" on the console that really add to the gameplay
- Loading Times are crazy fast (1:30 on PS4 down to 3 SECONDS on PS5!)
- Save Transfer is terrible, can not transfer save if you have ANY tasks at all active in the game
yeah scaled down about linearly with my old gtx 1070 + i7 3770 at 1440p..

Err da faq is this, it's forcing an upgrade to digital deluxe edition for extra cash?!?

Edit: Lol, I literally cannot upgrade to the regular Directors Cut. I've only got the regular PS4 edition which seemingly is delisted. Haha, fucking Ryan.

Edit: false alarm, Deluxe Upgrade is not charged extra. See few posts below.

I have just the regular PS4 edition as well and havent looked to upgrade but not liking how this sounds

It won't carry over my save from the Ps4 version on my Ps5. It says "ps4 version not on server" or something like that. i literally have the ps4 save data on my ps5. anyone know a remedy?

You automatically get the digital deluxe stuff with the directors cut. It's just a single price upgrade I believe. No options to choose.

I did mine with the disc this morning so not sure how it works if you have a digital copy.
