[DF] Death Stranding Director's Cut PS5: The Digital Foundry Tech Review

Err da faq is this, it's forcing an upgrade to digital deluxe edition for extra cash?!?

Edit: Lol, I literally cannot upgrade to the regular Directors Cut. I've only got the regular PS4 edition which seemingly is delisted. Haha, fucking Ryan.
This is really lame.

Just saw the video. The load times are crazy fast. Very impressive. This game looks so cool. The visuals are very striking. I wanna play this now!

Firing up now to look, wtf is Jimbo thinking
Ok, I've done some deeper looking. The upgrade price from PS4 Standard Edition (disc or digital) is the same as the price difference between PS4 Deluxe and PS5 Deluxe.

In conclusion - the deluxe upgrade is more or less free. It is just the next gen tax that Sony is charging, lol. Crisis averted.

Edit : the deluxe bonuses are a joke, no wonder it's free. But maybe I'm not the right demographic, I place $0 value on digital loot. Crypto excluded.

It won't carry over my save from the Ps4 version on my Ps5. It says "ps4 version not on server" or something like that. i literally have the ps4 save data on my ps5. anyone know a remedy?
From what I've read, you actually have to do the process in game at a terminal lol

I kind of respect it from a game thematic perspective, but it's kind of a pain in the ass from a practical perspective. I'm just gonna start from fresh anyway.

I don't know if it's just an issue of the store, but I find the 10 bucks banner upgrade only via PSAPP. I can't find it regularly in the dedicate page in the ps5 store, so I used the search function in the app and filtered premium games and it's appeared. EU account. Hope it helps.

Maybe it's just more Genius. Kojima wants you to play the PS4 version, then fire up the PS5 version straight after and it's like wiping Vaseline off a lens moment of revelation - blowing minds

I have it on disc. The upgrade only appears when the disc is in. The actual game gets discounted to the "upgrade" cost. Quite clever actually. The disc essentially is a ticket to a discount, a redemption, there is no actual upgrade

well if anyone has some problem to find the upgrade page for the digital edition, I suggest my method. At least I was unable to find it regularly, don't know why.

Thanks dude, this worked for me.

Played for 20 minutes just to look at it for a bit

Quality mode + widescreen is pure sex

Amazing IQ + perfect stable framerate

Have finished it already on my PS4 but I'm eager to play it all over again as soon as I can

Even in a slow paced game such as this, 60 fps is transformative

I trust you with that because I can't be arsed to google it, but - you're talking half of a frame at 60Hz. Is that really such a difference?

Depends from the method the most input lag measures many are compared to CRT screen, others uses a special equipment, but my tv have less input lag the most tv on current market, yours could better depending of the method used compared to the test they did 8 years ago

I am downloading the DC and it just reminds me how slow the PSN is. wtf. I have 600mbit connection, great wifi6 router in the SAME ROOM.
PC wired is going full 750mb/s (600mbits) but ps5 is doing like... 10-40mb/s... and it's on 5ghz. Why wouldn't it fucking switch to wifi6

From what I have seen PS5 can do ~40MB/s out of max 120MB/s my connection can do (1Gb/s). That's on Wifi 5GHz (ac?).

I get great speeds on psn. Always have but with the ps5 I've definitely seen faster downloads probably because the ssd write times.

I have a 110 Mbps connection and get 12-13 MBps which Is what I get on Xbox, Eric store and steam.

Origin though, useless. Where do you live? Could be the servers are too far away.

Poland.
It is just disappointing since steam is doing crazy numbers.

Anyway - I've played for a few moments and I really like it. The AA is kinda weak but that's the only drawback.
I have 48" lg c1 oled and tried the widescreen 4k mode. It's weird. Everything seems small. Text elements too.
Also - anyone knows what values HDR luminosity corresponds to ?

This is absolutely beautiful on PS5. I played it before at launch but I am so excited to be going back in. Even dropped my FF7 remake run to go back to this. The HDR is stunning in Decima.

I hope mouse and keyboard support will not be popular on consoles.
I would hate for devs to waste time having to develop for more control devices and also (more important) it would introduce arms race(expensive mouse and keyboard coming to ps5) and controller vs mouse multiplayer fiasco.

I kinda like the idea of 1 or 2 controllers that every game uses. It's even ground and a goal for devs

I wonder at what points of the game does it dip and is it a regular occurrence.
I'm playing on Quality mode full 16:9 and can only very rarely see dips on cutscenes when the camera zooms on someone's face. I'm not very sensitive to frame drops though. I'm also playing deathloop on quality and don't mind the drops.

I understand there are some rules before transferring your data.
But considering the noise made how bad it is, it's pretty straight forward and unlocked 50% of my trophies.

Kinda crazy hearing people praise the Ultra Wide mode, wasn't not long ago people was bitching about The Order & Evil Within

Yeap, same here. I just had to finish an order and it uploads the save to the cloud on terminal. Boom. Just another order for Kojima.

Same here I'm not fussy. Quality it is.

Yes, I find hdr in this game to be almost a must. I see sdr footage on YouTube and it looks gharish to me compared to the realistic tones of hdr in this game.

Just turned it on and I'm in love. Still need to see if I like it during combat but I started a new save.
i have an OLED and watching widescreen movies at night, i dont even notice it because of how black the OLED black bars are. its amazing.

OMG, imagine if the 40 fps ratchet mode was widescreen. they might hit 60 fps with fewer pixels.

Started messing with this on the OLED and wow its a stunner especially with HDR on.

Next going to try the wide mode on the ultra wide and see how it looks

Quite the stunner of a game.

Heads up, the ultrawide mode in DS isn't going to work as you think on your ultra wide monitor. PS5 is not actually outputting 21:9.

If you try it on a 21:9 monitor it won't fill up the display width. You'll get black bars on the left and right sides.

Its still just made for your regular (OLED) 4K TV, still just 16:9 output as 3840x2160p from the console.

It just letterboxes with black bars above and below, like a movie.

I think you'll want to try the ultrawide quality mode on your OLED first. You'll see what I mean, hopefully this makes sense.

Funnily enough, I loved the wide screen mode in The Evil Within and original GameCube release of RE4 but it's not doing it for me in Death Stranding. Keeping my full screen quality mode.

I loved this game…it was one of my top games last gen and GOTY 2019…should I grab the DC?
You should. It's only 10 bucks and it's a stunner on PS5. 3 second loading times as well. The digital bonus material is a bit meh and it comes in a separate app (music and artwork) that I deleted immediately.

Yep, it looks stunning in ultra wide on a CX. Adds a whole new veneer of cinematic scope to the game. Am loving the vistas far more this time around than in my first shortened play on PS4. The increase in quality across the board has elevated the game to a much higher place than its initial, rather janky launch.

The community aspect is so much more fleshed out now too. Much Better than at launch.

They didnt really change anything about the community aspect though. ;p thats how it was at launch.

the problem was that it didnt open up until you got to the open world chapter. a lot of people lost interest in the 2nd chapter which didnt have any highways to build and very few places to build bridges.

I have to contest the pixels counts to DF. Imo this game seems temporal reconstructed and not native resolution in all the graphic mode for my eyes. Graphic exhibit notable jaggies in motions in all the resolution setup and the issue reported by John it's typical of IQ temporal reconstructed.
