DF: Nier Automata demo PS4 vs PS4 Pro

Hopefully the base PS4 gets bumped up. I don't see any reason why it would be 900p, unless the dev wants the game to be completely locked at 60fps 100% of the time.

Hopefully this doesn't start a trend where developers get lazy and just leave the base PS4 version at "good enough".

Lazy devs again huh? You are not a dev, why do you assume it must be able to bumped up?

Your concern will never happen as base PS4 still sells a lot more than the Pro.

It's an open world 60FPS game with a modest budget, 900p is reasonable for what it is.

Frame pacing looks like shit in the end in the boss battle. Surprised they didn't comment on it. Their graph was all over the place.

Thats not frame-pacing. Pacing only occurs when refresh-rate is artificially "locked" below the native frequency of the video output.

What you see there are minor frame-drops.

I'm going by what I saw in the demo.

Nothing really blew me away, graphically. It's not a great looking game by any means.

It's not going to effect my purchase, I'm just voicing my opinion.

It should not have to get bumped up. The game was created how it was to prioritize what it needs to. Unless you want a much worse FPS in general just because you wanted them to push resolution.

Nothing is going to be without sacrifice, and they were dedicated to as much of a 60fps hold as they could in this instance

The original nier had a very minimalist washed out tone just like this game so far. Its apart of the art style as much as the lower graphical fidelity.

I also expect this to have been a middle tier Platinum development priority compared to Scalebound and Bayonetta 2 or 1 so budget also plays a factor.

But again, i don't think the PS4 version is bad for prioritizing FPS and generally speaking, do not expect good graphical fidelity out of Platinum games.

Finally a game where you can see the difference between PS4 and PS4 Pro.

And is always nice when dev target 60fps, putting more importance on good gameplay.

We already knew the game was 900p on PS4 because Platinum themselves said it was going to be a while back in order to reach 60fps. so i don't get the controversy now? It feels like a bunch of concern trolling especially because the vast majority of people would not complain at all until this video came out and saw numbers.

I also don't get the mindset of 'its 20XX, developers/hardware/engines have limitations? That shouldn't be a thing!' It will always be a thing.

It should be even more understandable because PS4 is 3 years old at this point. As time goes on hardware shows its age. it took much earlier for 360 and PS3 to need to cut down from native res for most titles, and even now PS4 still keeps up with 1080p in most games, which is still a miracle in of itself.
Not surprising.
People shat on me when I told them they were delusional to expect Uncharted 4 to run at 1080p at 60fps with the reveal teaser graphics, while running on ps4.

Then not only it wasn't 60fps, but also a downgrade from that initial tease.
And in Multiplayer it looked even worse, at 900p, to hit that 60fps mark.

This is Naughty Dog with Sony's full backing were talking about, Platinum with a likely much more modest budget isn't going to pull off any miracle, despite people's magical expectations out of an hardware that was dated when it came out, more than 3 years ago.

I mean Platinum are far from tech wizards, but people's expectations are unrealistic regardless.

Super glad I didn't spend early on the slim and waited for the Pro.

People need to keep in mind this is going to be the reality for just about every released game from here onward, sure every single game might not double the resolution or frame rate, but differences in IQ and consistency like this will very quickly add up. Yakuza 6 is another example with a similar output, base PS4 is 900p, Pro is 1080p. Both should be higher honestly but unfortunately this is what its coming down to now.

Its easier for many smaller devs working on titles that stretch their capabilities to simply lower res to gain performance advantages elsewhere. The nature of console development essentially makes this an inevitability every cycle.

Last gen, generally only first party devs kept games native 720p, and even then, IQ and performance went down.

I have made my peace with the that and jaggies, i don't have the money and the benefits for 4k stuff weren't going to be a thing in my place anytime soon. I will deal with what i get.
I do wonder how Horizon will do on base. Nier has what i want and i can deal with it not looking the best that is available.

I'd be ok with 900p if the game didn't look like ass.

Platinum games never focus on visuals cause they are pushing 60fps over everything else. People say they want that yet complain when they get it.

So is this final?

They might improve performance and AA on both models for launch(and maybe substitute the 900p cut scenes for 1080p ones on Pro), but generally speaking, Platinum have already stated the intended resolutions and graphical upgrades for PS4 and Pro in a previous streaming of the game and they are in line with the demo.

900p PS4, 1080p PS4 Pro. Motion blur, enhanced AF and IQ for Pro, slightly better performance

People keep thinking you need a 4K set to rid jaggies when in reality a super sampled 1080 image rids all jaggies. Check out Watch Dogs 2 running on a PS4 Pro on a 1080p TV.

I wouldn't care if the PC version had a release date...still holding on to my PS4 preorder in case it ends up being super far off.

I really enjoyed the demo on the PS4 Pro and am happy with the visual fidelity. The original Nier wasn't much of a looker but still turned out to be one heck of a great game so Nier: Automata is so far a huge upgrade in the visual department from where we started.

And I liked the motion blur. To each his own, I guess.

I think the game should be able to look better on original PS4, after having seen this video.

Game looks like fun though. Hopefully the resolution can even get a bit higher for downsampling on the PSPro.

Optimising your game to run at 60 fps makes you lazy confirmed.

More like having your priorities straight IMO lol

You are guys complaining about the PS4 version, while I'm sitting here wondering why there's just a tad more than XB1 to PS4 level of difference in favor of the Pro.

The Pro only has a x2.3 GPU compared to PS4. They have a 40% jump in resolution in addition to graphical and visual updates and a smoother FPS. That will eat up system performance pretty quickly depending on your targets.

In addition to the fact that, the pro version was probably only optimized by a few people, as Sony wanted. So they didn't really have to put in much effort to get to a higher visual standard, and left it at that.

No. The OG PS4 is perfectly capable of the pro's visuals for a game like this. Just a lack of optimization on the devs part.

But that's what we often get going from Xbox One to PS4
900p to 1080p and a slightly smoother framerate etc

I'd also expect more from a machine with a 2.3x more capable GPU and faster RAM/CPU

Achieving stable framerate is an inherently wasteful practice. Gaming workloads are not constant so to ensure there are no dips you need to be running much faster than your target most of the time.

Some of you guys need to understand that unless you have the techincal wizardry of id tech or the fox engine, 1080 60 is a boarderline impossibility on these systems, and as trch moves forward optimization on consoles will likely prioritize resolution less and less

Difference makes sense given 60fps target. Cutscene quality is a shame hopefully PC verison isn't limited to 30fps also.
I mean, I made and released a 60fps 1080p ps4 game, but yes I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Your conspiracy theory that the Pro is what's holding back the base PS4 version is ridiculous.

There are a handful of great looking 1080p/60fps games on PS4, games like Doom are a massive anomaly that should be lauded for their accomplishment (And almost surely came at the cost of a much larger team and budget) rather than people shitting on Nier Automata for not hitting that bar.
Nice! Easy savage 😀

So you have developed games using platinum's engine I presume.

Seems like the good old "let's make the cutscenes pre-rendered so they will look worse than the actual game" mantra from Platinum Games is back.

It was the same with Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta. I never understood why they're doing this.

I played through the demo on PS4 and it looked totally fine to me so I think I'll stick with the base version. The original Nier looked kinda terrible anyway so this could look like a game straight out of 2006 and I'd be okay with it. Hell, the demo actually kind of impressed me, those saw blades and the giant robot looked really good, I thought.

Wow most they can get out of the Pro is 1080p, not even a downsampled resolution!

This has me worried for resolution options in the PC release, has any of the latest Platinum releases on PC supported anything after 1080p, my 1440p monitor is starting to get worried.
